    Lmao it's so true, I hiked for an entire week through some pretty much constant super heavy downpours using nothing but bin liners and ziploc freezer bags in my pack. No need to buy expensive designer liners or some rubber monstrosity used on North Sea oil rigs. If you're worried about a puncture I am pretty sure your hiking kit has some waterproof tape in it or just carry a second spare liner for when you really do a bad tear.

    Rubble sacks are another option, closer in durability to the fertilizer sack but don't need cleaning out.

    • @outdoorsinspiration9284
      @outdoorsinspiration9284  3 роки тому

      Absolutely - They never seem long enough for bigger sacks though. But a rubble sack is pretty durable and can last several seasons 👍

      I use rubble sacks but agree that they are shorter than I would like. I overcome this by distributing my equiment over 2 or 3 rubble sacks making sure not to over fill them so I can tie the open end off to reduce the chance of water getting in.

      @@chrisgreen8916 Thats the only draw back (length) but it seems you've overcome it :) Some of the tougher black bin bags are quite heavy duty, but nothing like that of rubble sack 👍

    I've got an American friend who gives me Ziploc freezer bags - cheap, durable and waterproof, although the largest size available is only approx. 7.5L - easily enough for food, fire starting kit or a pair of thermals.

    Excellent bit of ‘Up Cycling’ Shamus! Although I’ve now ‘upgraded’ to dry sacks the Bin Liner idea was rammed into us as DofE participants some 40 odd years ago and as explained it still holds true today. Being ex-military you will remember the concept that if you found yourself in a pretty sticky survival situation where you had lost most of your kit you take the bin liner make a hole for your head and two for your arms and actually wear it as a waterproof jacket 😂 It works! Anyway, brilliant no nonsense explanations and ideas as always. Keep the videos coming! ATVB Graham

    Sounds like a similar evolution to me: bin bags as a kid but they were rubbish 😬 kept tearing, I then started using the old emergency orange survival bag, much stronger like a rubble sack and I was carrying it anyway so a bit of double duty. It was ok but eventually got holes in it and it was noisy especially early morning starts in bunkhouses. Plus, if you did need to use it in an emergency you had to dump out all your kit. I upgraded to an Ortlieb bag, absolutely bomb proof, designed for rough handling on boats and canoes but a bit bulky and heavy. I now have a few colour coded bags which are lighter and more versatile rather than one big rucksack liner. I can use them in a day sack or larger pack whereas as 60l liner is a pain in a 25l day sack. Plus if one is damaged and leaks only the items inside get wet not everything else, plus it makes thing easier to find especially in the dark if they have different textures. I absolutely loathe rain covers on packs, they don’t keep the bag dry - there’s a huge gap where the pack touches your back, they flap in the wind and blow away if they’re not attached to your back and just make it a faff to get things out of pack and side pockets. I try and keep away from single use plastics like sandwich bags etc I prefer reusable items that last a lot longer plus when I’m out and about I see more discarded plastic bags lying around than dry bags. I know correlation doesn’t imply causation but....

      @clivenewton7609 3 роки тому +1

      I sort of agree with the sentiment and have gone through the same sort of evolution (most people of a certain age have😂) However, although I don’t use rain covers they certainly have a place in the running. I would have a guess that any sack, not specifically “waterproof “ is made of material that over a short period of time will absorb the rain water. Ok the gear in the sack will still be dry but the overall weight of the pack has probably gone up by 3lbs and that will have a big affect on a juvenile or old (like me!!) frame. Kind regards from Clive in deepest Dorset 👍

    • @slippery999
      @slippery999 3 роки тому

      @@clivenewton7609 fair point but my pack is nylon Robic so although not “waterproof” (no taped seams) it doesn’t absorb water except for a tiny bit of padding on the shoulders perhaps.

    Dot know if you've done one, but a video about phone cases/bags would be good. Personally, having trashed three waterproof cases in a year I've gone back to bags. One has a sealing clip at on end, about £12, Wellhouse (?), and the other - a bit neater for smaller pockets, is a ziploc Lifeventure from a pack of three for £8. I prefer the cheap one, its easier to use the phone.

    Congratulations to the winner and your fantastic prize.. Another great production, Shamus and Petra. Well covered topic from cheap - expensive and light to heavy options. I have never used the one liner option or a rucksack cover. At the expense of a little extra weight and cost, much better I think for me to use a number of dry bags and colour code the organisation of my gear. If one bag fails then the rest of your kit is still ok as its in different bags!! I have also got small punctures in some of my dry bags despite being very careful with sharp items. So using a number of dry bags not only protects your kit from the elements but protects it from other items of kit too.. Tom

    I have Military Surplus Tank Bags, Bergen Liners, but still prefer the heavy duty 160 Litre bins bags because they have so many other uses too. I also reuse transparent 3 kg sized Pasta bags (dogs food) sealed with elastic bands and/or cut up old Inner Tubes so that I can visually see what kit is contained inside. Also, being food grade bags gives other options. I do have one dry/stuff 20 Litre bag which is for my sleeping bag/blanket. The only advantage for me is that these bags do allow you to be able to compress your soft kit better, but each to their own. IF using a bin bag on its own as your Rucksack liner then ensure it is large enough to roll over the top as if not and water does get in there, it will be like soaking your kit in the bath. Congratulations to the winner - I hate him already. 😉🤦‍♂️

    • @outdoorsinspiration9284
      @outdoorsinspiration9284  3 роки тому +1

      Haha 😂 great advice - I’ll have a look at pasta bags for dog food. It’s very easy to get swept away with consumerism - the ‘stuff sack’ is the worlds oldest design cinch bag going bag to at least Neolithic people - it’s doesn’t have to be complicated. I haven’t used ‘compression’ sacks in years now. ATB 😊👌👍

      @@outdoorsinspiration9284 I buy them in Metro Cash & Carry (that would be MAKRO in the UK). They're for human consumption, but basically a catering pack. I boil up 1 Kg. of Chicken livers, 1.5 kg of Pasta Twirls and 1 kg of cheap white Rice. That'll feed my 5 dogs for 2-3 days and then, in between some cheap Kibble and a large tin of dog meat (if there is any meat in it). Mine are all Street rescue (recycled) dogs so no need for expensive Royal Canine type stuff - just too expensive for me.
