Great dogs for families, hunters and retirees that are fairly active. Nice all around nice dogs and size is great for travel. Great swimmers too. A lot like a Golden Retriever only size and color. Smart fast learners and love their owner.
I think that overall, hunting dogs are tough to beat as family dogs if the family has the time and space for a dog. They are more balanced and less extreme than other groups of dogs.

I've had MANY different breeds of dogs in my life, and my current boykin is my absolute favorite (and I honestly love all dogs)! She is so sweet, goofy, and cuter than I can stand. Watching this makes me want to cry and just go home right now to squeeze her!!
I have rescue dog that is mostly Boykin- (she's a little bigger than a full Boykin and has a bit of white on her chest and feet) We've had her for 8 years and she is the sweetest, friendliest, well mannered dog I've ever had. She's mostly quiet, has never been destructive in any way and is extremely social with most everyone. She's 11 now and still full of energy and spirit. I honestly could not ask for a better companion. These are dogs that want to be with people and are extremely affectionate.

Spaniels in general are a good bet and the smaller spaniels are a convenient size and pretty healthy. They have lovely temperaments. I have and ECS now but when I get my next dog, I am considering a Boykin, American Water Spaniel, Field Spaniel, or field bred English Cocker. Show line of English Cockers are getting increasingly hard to come by.
I need to add that they are VERY smart. If my dog had opposeable thumbs, I would insist she get a job. She really is super bright.
Such an underrated dog breed
This is the best dog I've ever had. If you are interested in this breed, I recommend you get your pup from a top breeder who has genotyped the pup's parents. The breed has eye and muscle problems. The relevant genes that cause these problems have been identified. The top breeders genotype their animals to ensure that genetic defects are not present.

We had a mix lab/boykin with the boykin being predominant genetic trait. 16 of the most wonderful years of our family were spent with this dog, that someone tossed on the roadside as a pup.

I have a boykin spaniel lab mix. I wouldn't trade him for anything I love him.
I have a Boykin/English Springer Spaniel mix but she looks like a pure Boykin.
That mix sounds like a winner to me
. We had Labs growing up but I am at an age where Labs are just too big to manage which is why I did my homework and came up with the English Cocker.

I have a chocolate puppy which was sold to me as a "cocker spaniel". by the breeder. However she has exceptional energy levels and other traits that don't match the cocker spaniel. ( I will just mention here that I have had 2 cocker spaniels prior to this spaniel puppy.). After watching this video and laughing at the Boykin puppy playing with her bed and running around with the shoe by its laces, I realised that my puppy is exactly the same and won't sit still for very long at all. Now I realise she is a Boykin and that is why she speeds around my house with my shoes, laundry, and every thing else she can get in her mouth. So now I can learn how to appreciate what she needs to keep her happy.
My cocker is energy brains and focus on steroids. She has really strong drive. So maybe her temperament is not typical of the breed. She is an English Cocker tho. As she is my first, I have no way of knowing whether her temperament is typical or not.

Edit: we drove from Maryland to Georgia on July 18 to get our Boykin. We went home the next day. She’s so cute!

Depends. They average 1000-1500. Don’t get a cheap one. Spend the money to get a quality pup from a quality breeder.
Just bought a female mix Boykin/ English Springer Spaniel for $750. The breeder breeds both breeds and it was an accident liter. Looks like a Boykin.
