Such a lovely vlog on the little brown dog. Love finding out the history of the breed. We lost our ten year old Boykin Blaze last night but he will be in our hearts forever.
I was so sorry to hear about your Blaze. We know how hard it is to lose one of our beloved family members. Take care and always remember the wonderful times you had with Blaze.
It's fun to see that Brittanies were part of their early breeding. I grew up with a Brit and have had 3 including a rescue. We are expecting to pick up our first Boykin in March. Love the hammer dulcimer music!
I first learned about Boykins in a novel (which I have totally forgotten) and I was so interested I looked the breed up and fell in love. I have 2 big Ottterhounds so a Boykin is probably not in our retired life at the moment but it is back there in my mind.
I met one of these dogs at my local creek. That dog was all business. Ignored anything and anyone except for the ball he wanted to fetch. Just wanted to play fetch until the end of time
What a great story! Loved it...How funny I used to call my chocolate lab little brown dog when she was a puppy, but of course she didn’t remained lil! 😂 thank you for the great info, I’m a South Carolinian & cocker spaniel lover, so of course it’s no wonder I would choose a Boykin, even though she hasn’t found me yet your info will prove to be truly helpful in finding my own lil brown dog... 🐶thanks again! Bonne
We now have two Boykins and I have really fallen on love with the breed. I don’t know when or how; but, somewhere along the line there was feline DNA introduced to the breed. My girlkin will use her paws just like a kitty.
My doggo is a quarter Boykin spanial (also 1/8th German pointer, 1/8th German shepherd, and half Lab). Her coat is black, she's tall and slender - 35lbs, her eyes are honey colored and ears are large and floppy. We taught her many commands...she's easy to teach. We didn't teach her to hunt, but she loves staring at ducks. Once she went after some geese, and they turned back and chased her...now she's scared of geese.
I will say, we have to keep a watch on her big floppy ears...she gets infections easily and had ear mites once. I wonder if the Boykin spaniel is susceptible to that.
Nice video and great history of the breed. Could be improved and balanced by discussing the breed specific health problems and more on the behavioral problems. Also, any other negatives such as difficulty in obtaining a pup, keeping the coat and ears rid of burrs and grass seeds or other possible issues.
Thank you for watching! You have some great suggestions which I'll discuss with the folks at the Boykin Spaniel Society. I know that screening for breed specific health issues are very important to the society and for the breed.
It's important to match dog with owner as you know. All owners should fully understand the pro's as well as the con's before getting any breed. I see far too many owners discovering this stuff after acquiring the dog.
You are so right. Originally the video only had information about the history of the breed without the caveats at the end about the Boykin not being the dog for everyone. The Boykin Spaniel Society asked us to make sure we let everyone know that the Boykin is NOT the best dog for all families. Too many people see cute and cuddly and forget that they require a lot of work to channel all that energy and intelligence in a constructive way. Great points! I really see another video in the works :)
Good for you to be open to suggestions. So many people now are offended if you make any comments that are not absolutely fabulous. We're all in it for the dogs.
Agree 100% The more suggestions the better as far as I am concerned. And we always have to protect the dogs - after all, where else can you get so much love, comfort, and sheer joy! Thank you again for the suggestions - I will pass them on to the Boykin Spaniel Society and see what we can do about a Part II video.
Camden - Classically Carolina funny thing is they recommend one breeder from sc and they have dogs with degenerative myelopathy as a carrier and eye issue
According to the Society, Boykins can have ear issues just like other spaniel breeds. The ear canal needs to be kept dry. They also said that some Boykins do have more ear issues than others.
Camden - Classically Carolina on the society website it has a list of preferred breeders wth one from south Carolina named dawn crites and if you search dawn crites Boykin spaniel there’s a website of the dogs used at print genetics showing them being carriers of degenerative myelopathy and even on with collie eye anomaly

They are wonderful little dogs! I had never heard of the otterhound so looked them up. They look like such happy dogs!

I reached out to the Boykin Spaniel Society on this. I'll let you know as soon as we hear back from the Society. Thanks for watching!
