I love Tallarico's work on the Genesis. He was one of a select group of American composers who got FM Synthesis on the Genesis and knew how to use the GEMS program pretty well.
Ah, so this was the creator's original vision. This soundtrack seems like it was made more for FM than it was for the SNES, as the SNES version uses crap samples.
@@solarflare9078 that's because around 1995 the third party programmers get the upgraded versions of the SNES dev kits that the first party ones had a year before, so things got a lot more easier to translate at that point.
Earthworm Jim tracks, specifically Buttville, New Junk City and Level 5 have extra notes in dual YM2612. It changes the things a bit, but nothing crazy as this track where channel limitations really cut down a lot.
the extra little touches make it even greater. the Genesis version already far superior to the sound of the SNES but this version is probably the best of all :)
I generally hate Tallarico's stuff, but this is one of the few tunes of his I genuinely enjoy. Nice to hear the full version of it as it was originally created, thanks for making this!
Thank you so much for uploading this! Do you have any plans to do this with other songs from the soundtrack (assuming that the other songs have unheard channels)?
This was very much a case of "I had this as an example for a point in a different video, so I may as well share my research notes". as such, I don't have any plans to upload anything more from the soundtrack. though honestly I'm not sure to what extent the rest of the soundtrack has unheard channels!
@@GSTChannelVEVO Cool Spot may not, but Earthworm Jim's New Junk City and Buttville Descent have hidden stuff in dual YM2612 too. Nothing crazy like this, but still.

Is there extra patch data for Earthworm Jim 2's Flyin King? I always thought the instrumentation in that game was the best GEMS had to offer, though it was mostly lacking in them.
that's hard to answer without actually comparing to the patches that came with GEMS, and I don't have my setup working right now. I can say that i recognize 3 of the 5 patches i spotted at glance. the other two might be patches that i just don't remember, but they might be original, as Tommy T liked to modify the defaults occasionally. (like with the opening pads in "Lorenzen's Soil" for example)
One of the few Tallarico tunes I enjoy, but why does the music sound like it has some jitter? A bug in the music system, or was the music data never quantized?
I must admit that I'm not sure what you're talking about in this case. I have spotted some GEMS tunes with noticeable "jitter" but this is not one of them. I can say this: the music is rigidly quantized to 1/24th of a beat, and the tempo is adjustable to anything between 40 and 167 BPM. I *suspect* that these two factors, when combined with the clock speed of the Z80, might cause some jitter, but I don't have any proof to offer you...
From 0:20 to 0:30 you can definitely hear the baseline notes not quantized; they're playing unevenly (especially from 0:28 to 0:30). If GEMS is showing the song data is being perfectly quantized, then the jitter must be due to something else, such as emulator imperfections, or possibly the slightly different playback rate vs. capture rate (Genesis vertical refresh rate is 59.92 Hz whereas NTSC broadcast/capture is 59.94 Hz). I'm not putting down your work -- I'm just trying to figure out what introduced the jitter.
Wow, I thought I nobody would ever notice jitter on Genesis songs. I believe it is not related to GEMS, but a issue with the timming between the 3 chips, the 68k, YM2612 and the Z80. Dragon Ball Z BuYu Retsuden is a very forgotten game but has one of the best OST of the Sega Genesis, the game alone is worth buying just because of the music. However, the jitter on it's soundtrack is extremely noticeable, and since it is a Bandai game, probably it didn't used GEMS as a sound driver. ua-cam.com/video/TRNAvgzwGeo/v-deo.html
It's fairly subtle (which is a good thing) the easiest way to tell is to listen to the pitch rise at 0:42. in most uploads its a single pitch, but here's it's a chord.
