I know this was made for actually older people but I'm 19 and I found this extremely useful. I've had depression for 8 years and my mind used to be so wild in my younger days, and now it's so hard to even daydream. Thank you.
I’m 23 and in a similar situation, 7 years of major depression and anxiety disorders. I’ve never felt so disconnected from my creativity and passions. And I was considered an extremely creative and active child. This video definitely touched me! I wish you happiness and all the best things life has to offer :)
Im 14 lol, im in the exact same situation, im pretty sure i have some sort of aphantasia because of my depression right now, but i used to be so creative when i was younger. Guess school beat that out of me, but i know its still in me.
Depression is mostly caused when you value conformity over creativity. You want to be you but then you fight being you because the rest aren't like you
Ageism is a prejudice against your future self. Creativity is investment in your future self. Nicely shared talk. Count me in on the granny graffiti project!
Honestly, I really needed to hear this. I'm a collage student, an English major. Something I realized is that I chose this field because I loved reading and writing but I also realized that the academic setting has cause me to almost despise both. When I was in high school, I was in a dark place but I was able to write so much and I didn't care about perfection. I only wanted to tell stories about different worlds. Now, I find it harder than ever to even write a short creative piece. I feel bound to perfection because of the multitude of essays I've written in the past couple of years. I can't write without questioning the format of my piece or the grammar. I forget that when I'm writing a novel, not everything needs to make perfect sense. I can create things that don't exist, use words that don't exist and like he said "make a messy". But I think I needed that reminder that I had the most fun when I didn't care about structure or format but I was just writing from the top of my head and went with the flow. Anyway, I really enjoyed this presentation and I truly think I benefited from hearing this!
To reclaim our creativity it is very important for us to understand that we all are unique. We must not follow the crowd blindly. Our creativity shines when our uniqueness and individuality blossoms🙏
For anyone who is reading this, I pray that whatever is hurting or whatever you are constantly stressing about gets better. May the dark thoughts, overthinking, and doubt get out of your mind. May replace confusion. May peace and calmness fill in your life ❤️
Thank you, this is amazing. Even though I went to Art School and studied fine art, I was continuously told I was not as good as the rest. I was not part of the art clique, I didn't fit. It knocked me down so much, I stopped creating because I believed in them. They ripped out my love for just creating something out of my heart. Thank you so much for saying these words.
Robert Fritz's work is all about living in the creative orientation. His first book was The Path of Least Resistance (revised edition) You might check out his books on Amazon. Helped me out a lot.
As a father of an 8yr old boy this realization was heart breaking... I hope to inspire creativity and self expression and truth for my child! Safe journeys my friends
I've gotten to the point where he speaks about feeling inadequate for coloring outside the lines and I wasn't expecting this, but I've started weeping. I had no idea how much of an impact that made on me. I can tell this video is going to help me a lot and I'm so inspired already.
I tried hypnosis 25 years ago for relaxation and what i learned in that one session, still works today. I’m 54 now, kids are done with college and out of the house. I feel like its time for me again. I work in IT, like what i do but i think its time to reinvent myself. Been thinking about this for a few months now. Going to try using hypnosis to reignite creativity.
Wow, Damon, thank you for the redirection! I continue to enjoy the quient voice from the Big Guy. I bet your grannies love you. Looking forward to that mural; oh, yeah!
Dreams can be a great source of creativity and inspiration. Through lucid dreaming and dream incubation you'll be able to unlock your full creative potential plus it has many other benefits including: euphoria, facing fears, getting rid of recurring nightmares, getting better at other skills and more. Plus it's really fun and feels and looks exactly like real life most of the time. I highly recommend it, just be careful because there's way too much misinformation about dreams out there
Not a word of a lie, folks: the very first day of kindergarten I was made to stand in a corner, by my kindergarten teacher, for not only colouring outside the line, but due to my still uncertain hand-eye coordination, letting the pencil crayon slip off the paper onto the floor. Funny that 57 years later, I still recall the confusion and humiliation. Why did such an insignificant act merit such treatment. Round about Grade 7, I heard that she'd had a complete nervous breakdown and was taken from her apartment in a straight jacket (witnessed by a family friend). I wondered what had happened to her that she merited such treatment.
Doubt is the opponent. Defeat doubt unlock creativity. But what causes doubt? External factors and pressures? Others opinions and previous failures. Perhaps the answer is to nurture creativity and applaud end results regardless of success in order to combat the disease of doubt.
You're 100% correct. It is completely related to doubt. I was a creative genius at the age of 18 - however, a narcisisstic mentor planted seeds of doubt in my mind for 4 years and now I am still trying to fully regain my ability.
This is fantastic! Really cool Ted talk about creativity and mental health. Also, his Granny Death Graffiti class sounds like A great idea for so many! I wanna go! 👍👍😎💖
A distinction needs to be made. What Mr. McLeese seems to be talking about is creative achievement and the apprehensiveness of people to pursue creative achievements. It's risky business putting yourself on display. Most children don't mind doing so because they have not learned that trait. This lines up with his experience with Alzheimer's patients; they care less about the opinions of others in regards to creative achievement. Creative thinking is not the same thing, and creative achievement won't necessarily make a person a more creative thinker, anymore than practicing IQ tests will make you more intelligent. Since IQ and creativity are related, you can think about it like this: IQ is a measure of the speed at which you can process information. A creative thinker will be able to take something and generate more novel and useful ideas than a non-creative thinker. In summary, creative achievement is useful to get people out of their shell, more comfortable with who they are, or could be. But that creative achievement won't make them more creative thinkers.
I came from a COLOR full family. Mother American Indian....and Irish and Dad family from Ireland. I wrote stories of them on brown paper bags and he would go to Scituate Mass. and sell them for beer money. I did the drawings also. At the age of 13 a small girl was on the ice pond the day I was ice skating and went through. We kids cound not save her I felt her spirit come with in me....I flet her sadness her broken heart when my eyes looked upon her mother . We all were hurting that day for her way of death that came we had to witness. Going to school that week I told a story for the kids on the BUS we all cryed and hugged each other. That day a Woman from Melrose a Psychiatrise road the bus she listen and seen the actions of the kids after I told the story. She came to school and asked the Nun to have be put it on paper. Sunday she came to our house and asked my Mother if I would draw the drawings for the book. I did not want to do it. She said she was going to give it to the Mother for her to heal. For her i made the drawings. Annie's Angel by GRACE CARBERRY, FRONCKO. She STOLED THE BOOK THE DRAWINGS and took the AWARD they gave her for the BOOK. The money did not go to any family that lost children. I am going on 76 now she gone....and it's too late for me to do any thing about it. My life every one stoled from me..... things only things. I HAVE MY SOUL MY BREATH MY VIBRATIONS THE BEAT OF MY HEART MY SPIRIT THAT WILL LEAD ME HOME.... GOD is the AIR I BREATH.
I'm 15, i found this helpful, like the comment below. My creativity has taken a hit. Mainly I think because myself getting a phone at 12. Idk if that even makes sense
Like.... I get what you're saying. But the example you chose is not the best imo. Kids need to learn to write in a way that's understood by others. You can write legibly and still be creative.
“If you declare with your mouth “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9). Now is the time to accept Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior. Obey His commands and repent of your sins because Jesus is coming back soon. Tomorrow isn’t promised.
I used to smoke a lot but since quitting, I've come to the realisation that all it really did for me was cut my thinking processes and kill my motivation. It was a struggle to quit as my brain constantly tricked me into thinking that it was helping me with creativity for my music, but since stopping, I believe that I have became better at my craft. :) Only a couple weeks in, but I do believe I won't go back (maybe on occasion) but constant gratification from it really affects your brains ability to focus on hard tasks.

This advice is absolutely, fully applicable to people with depression. I hope you're doing better now, friend.
Depression is mostly caused when you value conformity over creativity. You want to be you but then you fight being you because the rest aren't like you
Painted my first portrait at 55 years old ,never did any drawing before, here I am still going strong at 67 and happy as a clam!

I reclaimed my knitting. We need to appreciate ourselves and take the initiative!!
schools crush creativity, getting you ready for life as a cog, in their system.
To reclaim our creativity it is very important for us to understand that we all are unique. We must not follow the crowd blindly. Our creativity shines when our uniqueness and individuality blossoms🙏
Yes!
I may disagree, Creativity has nothing to do with your uniqueness...
WOW, I needed this right now. I will take this to heart. I have an entire room of creative genius I can start with since my husband died.
Creativity keeps us motivating !!!
What a soul.

When you start learning rules creativity starts dying...

Wow thank you. This has sparked some curiosity in me. 💜
Thank you so much. I love making a mess and having fun with the 1-5 year old children that I teach. My only problem is my attempts at organization.
They're so young they probably don't even notice. Keep up the good work! You're shaping the future everyday ^_^
Thankyou!!
