  • Today in something of a new type of video. I Talk about my favorite 3 part Arc from enterprises 4th Season. "Borderland", "Cold Station 12", and "The Augments". Breaking down how the plot and story work to create an engrossing Narrative. And How Brent Spiners Return To Trek as the Villian Arik Soong is not only a fun bit of fan-service but an excellent performance in its own right.

Enterprise never got the love it deserved. When they stuck to the ideas of exploration, with single episode stories, they often got the formula right.

I really liked the Augment arc. It is a proper way to echo Khan's story without relying so overtly on the similar battles. I think Spiner did a great job with the character and articulating why even the Augments deserved liberty... and why, ultimately, it never seems to work well. Also, it really demonstrates what an actually augmented human being would be capable of physically. It wouldn't just confer superhuman strength but almost turns them into Jedi-like in terms of agility and speed.

It was really cool watching humans manhandle Klingons in this episode.
I will admit that something I always wondered was if the issue with augments was that they tried to do to much to fast. Making them so far removed from normal humans helped inspire their... attitude issues.
I wonder if the augments could have been better done if they had done the augmentations in small amounts over a long time. Like rather than making them super human you only gave them a slight, barely noticeable increase in power. Then wait for that increase to filter through all of humanity before doing the next increase.

@@Nostripe361 100%. They should have rescued Soong and then hide for a few years until the heat was off them. Instead, they tried to have their cake and eat it too.

The thing I liked about Enterprise Season 4 is how it had different arcs that felt like they represented the species they were about. You had the Romulan arc which was very cloak and dagger, the Vulcan arc that was quite slow and thought provoking and you had the Klingon/Augment arc that was fast paced and action packed. Perhaps most importantly humanity really took a back seat in Season 4 and let the other races really shine which made it much more interesting to me.

I never thought Enterpise was a bad show. I loved the casting and loved Scott Bakula from Quantum Leap. Maybe I was at the right age not to see the cringy parts of the show as bad. Also for me Dear Doctor is up there with the best episodes of Star Trek. There is a lot to love about Enterpise and show cut too short as it was finding its feet. Star Trek fans were way to critical of the show.

I don't blame the fans. The first season was beyond weak and season 2 was not much better. To be honest I don't even think they should have done a prequel show unless your were going to make it like Babylon 5 or something. They should have just set another show after voyager and spent more time on the scripts and characters.

It is a decent story arc. A lot of neat callbacks. While I find the exploration of augments themselves somewhat half-baked, 22nd century Soong himself was an intriguing character to watch. It was nice as well to see some the developments that would later lead to the inspiration for the Soong-type androids of Data, Lore, and B4.
(And with the Soong clones from PIC, I half-expect a Soong Clone-Droid Wars storyline).

The Augments is daft but it's important because season 3 was very heavy, particularly towards the end so it helps to have this daft story with Brent Spiner to let the crew and the show relax a little. At the same time I don't think any other Captain could do this story. This is the ship that won the Xindi War but this is still the Captain that had to chainsaw a tree shirtless because his dog peed somewhere he shouldn't.
