    My advice to anyone looking for singles right now would be to befriend a few people addicted to ripping wax and/or group breaking and are looking to unload their hits for rent and grocery money.

    This shouldn't surprise anyone that's been in the hobby for years. The pandemic boom was a once in a lifetime perfect storm of events that sent cards to the moon. Guaranteed to collapse big time. These periods of hype and mania with collectibles creates a brief period to sell and make a lot. Followed by years of declines its not surprising and will only worsen.

    I mean it only makes sense that the industry would plummet in value across the board. Prices have been inflated since 2020 and now we are starting to finally see realistic prices for specific cards. Not only that, but the current economic situation this country is in does not help the market. Most people are not willing to spend a bunch of money on cards when they need to pay higher and higher prices for things like groceries and gas. Also, at least for the baseball market, I would say that the gradual decline right now is in part due to the season coming to an end, as all sports see this decrease in value as they go out of season. Football, on the other hand, has decreased even with the season starting. People realized that football cards were way too expensive and here we are. Basketball, same thing. Prices were too high and now they are decreasing. The industry overall, will continue to decrease, but once the economy improves or a big player turns up in whichever sport, we can expect to see an increase. Remember, it’s like a stock. It goes up and down with time and current events. Don’t think in the short term, think in the long term if you are trying to invest.
    Edit: Think in the short term only if you’re trying to really quickly flip cards. Personally, for baseball, I’m looking potentially at Brendan Donovan, as his cards are cheap and he may get traded to a bigger team. There was an article mentioning that he was a good fit for teams like the Yankees. If he joined the Yankees, that is a huge market increase for his cards. But of course, remember to diversify, don’t just buy one player.

    • @sarahandbrettSCAM
      @sarahandbrettSCAM 8 місяців тому +2

      Cards are not anything like a stock. A card is collectible with no real value. Skyrockets in a brief period of hype / mania and many go down forever. Its a hobby to collect. A Stock is an investment in a company that does something. Has real value. Pays a dividend. Stock market over time as a whole always goes up and you'll be fine in one of those total market or SP500 funds etc. Nearly all cards bought recently will keep going down and wont go back up. They'll never even get close to past highs. Outside of a few cards are rare exceptions. The stock market is an investment you're making as you expect to make money over the long haul and you will. A card is a collectible to enjoy with no expectation of future profits its just a hobby to have fun. This a major problem that many recently ran into they didn't understand and sadly learn the hard way.

    • @wasfurious
      @wasfurious 8 місяців тому

      @@sarahandbrettSCAM yes, it is much more of a hobby/collectible which is how I treat it. But for someone like Ohtani, he was basically his own stock. Mike trout cards fluctuated like a stock for a long time. Now they have gone down and are unlikely to return to the prices they once were. There are stocks that have high points, decline and never go back up. Disregarding the original hype of a card, yes they do move up and down in price like stocks. Of course they are never worth what they were during the initial hype period. But regardless they are very much like stocks for the cards that are valuable/rare. Player plays well or does something impressive, they go up. Do something bad like Wander Franco or play like trash, prices go down. Stock market moves up and down too lol.

    • @wasfurious
      @wasfurious 8 місяців тому

      @@sarahandbrettSCAM I do agree with you though that many didn’t understand cards and looked at them solely to make money. That’s what 2020 brought about and now we are seeing the effects brought on by a multitude of different factors. I personally started collecting about a year ago. I bought cards I liked, and I bought some that I thought would become valuable. Some of course don’t work out, but there are others that are worth more now than when I bought them. Of course they may go down, but in the case that they remain up, I’m going to sell my investment and make money.

I've collected since 2009 and make good money but I'm smart with my money so when boxes of cards went from $110 to $500 with only 2-3 autos in the box I quit buying. I went to retail or buying only 1 box a month that cost less than $200.
    I am not a fan of breakers but to get some of the rookies and players I wanted I was forced to get in a few breaks. I can say that I did hit a few bangers too which was pure luck.

    All you have to do is go to any sports card show to see that the industry is in free fall. Every single table outside of the couple of tables ran by old-timers with baseball cards from pre-80 are filled with the exact same thing. Boxes and boxes of modern crap, both base and "color" for 10 cents - 25 cents, and a few glass cases with the same 20-30 players with autos and non-player worn swatches with absurd prices on them. Although if you want a deal, they are there to be had, especially with cards that aren't in the glass case.
    Went to a show a couple months back, and spent $40 for 1k cards with UNC players for my nephew. Almost all modern cards, color, numbered, and even 3 1994 Finest basketball refractors that accidentally fell out of the box and into my collection. Got the sense from the guy that if I could have bought out his entire non glass case stock for a hundred bucks or so.

    Avoid buying Merlin Premier Gold 97 boxes from Thailand. The seller's have multiple boxes and have been tampering with them. You get one or two David Beckham cards per box. All they have to do is pull a Beckham and not open the rest of the packets. Take packs out of the remaining boxes to make up a complete box.

    The sportscard market is still correcting from the overinflated price during Covid when it seemed like everyone was getting free money. Sportscards are very difficult to make money on unless you hold on to them for a very long time
    My example is the 3 Wayne Gretzky rookies I pulled out of packs in 1979 when they were .25 a pack (I actually sold one in the 90’s for$300 bucks).

    Was collecting HOFer/on card autos (many players from that list you posted) for decades before the boom. Only just in the last year have I really, actively, started looking to add to my collection again. I bought nearly absolutely nothing for the last 3+ years. Just some stuff at the very beginning that I graded and moved long ago. Now, at auction(s), I am actively adding again because there is stuff falling through cracks with the market being so saturated and the 'morale' (as you put it) being so low. Exclusively auctions, though. Most everything else is people holding a bag that is just getting heavier with each passing day.

    Fanatics is trying to 10X their bottom line. The licenses and acquisitions are a cost of doing business. They are paying to tap into a largely unregulated and untracked data pool that will likely lead them to the next population of gamblers.
    Apparel buyers and autograph collectors are fairly easy to track and they have done that for years. But nobody has tracked people who open sports cards. It’s largely a cash business (so the wife doesn’t find out…etc). Now to get allocation you need a POS system, everything needs barcodes, the data must be shared back with Fanatics. Sports cards are worthless to them, consumer data is priceless and that’s what they were buying with Topps and whatever else they can get. It’s the data, it’s always been the data.
    Once a store is not increasing their reach or not growing their data pool, watch the allocation slow down and or stop. Grow or close. The stores don’t matter, there will always be someone else willing to try and open a new store.

    I remember when I was a kid, taking the RTD down to Goodwin Goldfadden's(sp?) place in L.A.. I'd save all month and spend $15.00 on a T206 HOFer. Cards were a kid thing then. Then in the 1980s, colleges and universities began cranking out dudes with the brand new degree of Financial and Estate Planning. These guys began looking for ways to invest in anything to make money. They reinvented the long standing coin grading system into several additional "mint states", after they bought everything up of course, so they could make $. They did the same thing with sports cards, comics, militaria, antique firearms, etc. I think these hobbies have been in a precarious place since. Just my opinion.

    As much as I completely understand SCR's point for making these videos, as well as titling them for maximum clicks, I wish they would explain better that this isnt a complete crash but instead a correction. Regardless, Im still gonna watch SCR because I love them and what they do for the hobby!
    But I'm sure a vast majority of all of you watching this video or commenting will agree with me stating: For Real Legit "Hobbyists" like you all and myself the Sports Card Market isn't CRASHING, but instead is CORRECTING!
    I agree 100% with SCR that the past 1-2 years, current market, and future trend is a continued nosedive downwards crash to alot of people! Their wallets are emptying just as fast as their hopes and dreams during this!
    But the only people that are experiencing this are those who say they are "in the hobby" since 2020 or later. But the thing is those people aren't actually "hobbyists" or apart of it like they state! That is why the market appears to be crashing to them, because they weren't in it for the right reason, and 90% solely were in it just to make money flipping!
    For those of us like myself and majority of you fellow true "hobbyists" who have been doing this since childhood and lived through periods like the Junk Wax Era and others similar, we all knew this was Junk Wax 2.0!
    But in my opinion the card market has seen alot of positive factors during this recent boom that have made it stronger than it has been in the past and is/will prevent it from returning to the state it was in post junk wax!
    That is why to real hobbyists like us this is just a CORRECTION because it's getting rid of all the people who were in it just to make money, inflated card prices visa vi influencers, breakers, and flippers, and finally, decreased turnaround on grading and grading prices. As prices correct to reflect what legit hobbyists deem as the true market value it will create a positive effect by allowing more collectors who were priced out these past years to come back in the hobby!
    So this isn't a TRUE CRASH of the Sports Card Market. It's just Correcting the mistake it made of allowing a ton of douche bags and dipshits like Jeff & BYB have any influence over it and bankrupting them as punishment hahahhaha!

    2020 was a bewildering year. Wanted the enjoyment of pulling a base card from my favorite team again... Didn't really understand the value of flipping. I lined up just like everyone else at Target and people asked why I was ripping stuff.
    Everyone has said this, but feels like the hobby has transitioned into only investing or speculation, not the enjoyment of the cards themselves. I walked into my LCS this weekend where I would normally pick out base singles of players I liked/teams I liked... and the boxes to do so were gone. I asked the owner and was told there just isn't any money in it. Disappointing to say the least :(
