- The sports trading card business has been rocked by scams scandals and shadiness just 3 weeks into the new year. Logan Paul purchased a $3.5M case of Pokemon cards that originated from @shopmeelypops - turned out to be fake GI Joe cards instead. @BackyardBreaks became the latest breaker to disgrace themselves in a familiar pattern of greed and selfishness. @marxcards7330 and @cardcollector2 couldn't even handle the easy task of being a middleman - defrauding collectors out of over $1m in trading cards. Today we discuss why inept and foolish people like this thrive in the sports trading card hobby.

This dude has kinda rubbed me the wrong way until I saw this video....he hit the f-ing nail on the head with this....these “investors” manipulating markets by simply posting a video to UA-cam....companies like PSA arbitrarily determining a cards “value” by manipulating pop counts...this video is perfect.

It's been the same in the hobby since the early 1980s. It has always attracted a certain pathologically sneaky low-risk criminal.
One that really gets off on getting something over on someone. It makes them feel clever. The deceit is the real rush.
There is nothing new under the sun. Remember, the first PSA card ever graded was proven to be trimmed.

Thank you. How about a video that discusses the honest, integrity-driven, wholesome and valuable aspects of the hobby. Those do exist. If they didn’t, the concept of collecting sports memorabilia (particularly for value) would have collapsed by bow. It has not. It has only grown. Therefore, focusing on the “good” is, in my opinion, as important as shedding light on the “bad,” which is done very poignantly in this video. In my personal opinion, the most significant factor that has become an unavoidable platform within the industry (that was not the case until 20 yrs ago) is the advent of the internet and smart phones. So long as billions of people have ready access to an endless number of chat rooms, UA-cam videos, and trading platforms, there will be scams, and unethical people will feast on people’s FOMO. Having said that, I look forward to seeing more content that is focused on what is Good and what works for the hobby.
SCR can't do that. They only function to criticize and the "gotcha". They're no different than the people they criticize.
It's super easy to sign up for PSA and send cards to get graded. I would never use a middle man. Good video as always.

That's rich you call people "lazy" yet put out tutorials on how you utilize COMC to sell all of your cards for you. What color is the kettle today, says the pot. Oh I don't know, but I'm an opportunist who sees a lot of scandals happening all at once so I'll put my UA-cam channel into high gear again for clicks.
That's not lazy. Its smart. We all should be utilizing comc. You can buy a card for .50 on comc that you would pay $3 for on ebay. You can buy until you are ready to have them shipped to you for $10 for 400 cards. . It saves collectors hundreds. It should be the ultimate source for all cards as everything changes hands on site and there is no dealing with bs. The sale is final once its purchased. Time is always the your most valued asset.
COMC in my opinion are a complete waste of space. Wait months for your cards, over inflated shipping costs for the customers and crap commission on the back end.

I am not hating, but I really don’t understand why most people use a group submitter. Just to much can go wrong in my opinion. I would rather mess up myself and own the mistake then be pissed some group submitter screwed me
You can get a bulk rate when u submit with a group, a lot of people can’t afford to send in 200 cards at ten bucks a piece by themselves to get the bulk rate discount

And if your card isn't numbered, you never really know if they swap em out.
Say you have a Gem Mint 10 and they have what looks like a 9 or 8. Whose to say they don't switch em around to boost up their own grades or their friends order??

I collected from 1998-2014 sold off everything late 2020 at its height some things I never understood in the hobby:
1 box breaks
2 group submissions
3 slabbing bullshit
4 UA-cam cult hype
5 the infatuation with flipping

Been collecting for over 50 years and once again the "turtles" of the hobby who do not fall for all the hype will persevere.
That's right..this is year 40 for me..ive seen many come and go and come and go again..the ups and downs of the hobby..and one thing that I have seen since I started in 1982 that never has gone anywhere is us ones that collect as true collectors.. that get excited pulling a base RC today as we did as kids..keep being the turtle cause us turtles have kept this hobby and the spirit of the hobby going for 100 years

I just collect for fun, enjoy staying close to a sport. I agree with the video. A serious question, how do these people afford buying these expensive boxes, with family, bills, and life priorities? They just going into debt maxing the credit cards?

So weird I send my cards myself to Psa. Just sent 100 cards and received 70 Psa 10 out of 100 the rest were 9’s not one 8. How hard can it be? 😂 and csg sucks they are a scam.
I don't want to name names because that's not my thing, but I have personal experience with one of the "heroes" in this video. Many of you will blindly defend this hero (and are in the comments) bc he's got a strong following, is clean cut and popular. He wronged me in relation to cards to the tune of $3000 and did absolutely nothing to make it right. All I'm going to say is exactly what this video is telling you. Trust nobody in this hobby but yourself. What you see of these heroes in online forums, IG, and YT videos is not who they really are. Wake up, smell the coffee, and protect yourself out there, you are surrounded by sharks trying to eat you.
Being a collector, I've seen these price rises a few times and as a collector you simply wait for the bottom to fall out, as it always does. If you're an investor, flipper, dealer you better time the market correctly or you'll get big time hurt. SCR is correct and simply saying the "correction" will get more and more severe due to all these jokers flooding the hobby.
The clowns have zero effect on us real collectors.

One thing I hate about grading companies and bbce is the more something is worth the more they charge. Sounds like a bit of a conflict of interest. I understand basing it on raw value but the up charges based on grade are my issue.

Any chance you could do a good news story? There's plenty of good people in the hobby that deserve to have their tyres pumped up. You make the whole industry sound like some sort of shady black market most of the time. It gets a bit tiring after a while

I collect cards for fun. I have sold cards to make a bit of money from time to time, but I have never seen it as an investment. It blows my mind how anything modern is worth thousands.

Just recently discovered your channel & I'm loving the content & most importantly, honesty that you imbued. I've been a collector since my Mother purchased my 1st baseball Topps pack back in 1983 & like many, I've been in & out of the hobby over the years. I love this hobby & I only stick to what I love & thats Baseball cards, (particularly) Chicago Cubs & Ryne Sandberg. I don't trust any of those fools you just mentioned & never will & don't understand why others do. Many newer (so called collectors), within the last say 4/5 years don't really care about the hobby only the money & it doesn't surprise me that dudes like that young cat from Ohio, got caught-up with that PSA debacle because he's just that, young, naive & really just in it for the quick buck. I hope the hobby purges itself from those people & becomes fun again but who knows..

IMO the sports card industry has always been shady af… Sports card shops in my area hire people to clear shelves at all retail stores and bring it to them to resell. Then they mark everything up 40% above market price… But at the same time can u blame them because if he don’t do it the next guy will

I love after 3 years, The SCI finally broke down and "informed" the masses vintage pre-1980 cards are better investments then modern. Talking about a pump and dumper. He can't pump and dump his modern anymore so he now has to change course after being called out by more reputable honest sources like silver jackify. He flip flops more then a shady politician.

here's the thing: this hobby or industry , like most, is full of unsavory people. this shouldn't shock anyone. if you can find a handful of people you can trust then consider yourself lucky. everyone else is just out to screw you over more than likely.

I’m very active. View my COMC portfolio, the website with card show calendar gets thousands of views per day. I have more in F1 Topps Chrome boxes than I have $ in the bank. Just because I’m not on here slurping the industry doesn’t mean I’m not active.

Thanks for the information I was planning on sending out some of my cards to get graded next month. Through a middle man (company) to get graded. Now I will be looking into sending them direct.

man I lost to much money falling for breaking, anyone reading this, think about the odds, If you like breaking...do your thing..im warning you...be ready to lost a heck of alot of money, If you have alot of money and that doesnt bug you. have at it, yes you may get lucky but you will lose if you keep beaking. Use a middle man for grading, I buy what's rare and I line cards so I don't toss money away! Get tons of messages what to buy all the time! Buy what u like enjoy the hobby and do your research
Im on whatnot alot and there are some solid dudes running solid breaks, but im curious what happened with Monmouth Cards? I havent heard anyone talk about it but i have seen some comments saying they scammed someone or something
I am an Australian. If I was American, I'd use PSA. Unfortunately, here in Australia there is Card Grading Australia and over the last year they've made big changes to their labels. I will continue to use this company since I like their services. I tend to get my cards graded at $13.75 per card.

Been collecting off and on as a kid. I still have a bit of a bitter taste in my mouth over card resellers/shop owners. Remember pulling a Topps Pujols rookie and the shop owner offered me $5 because I was young. I didn't do it and I still the card. Seeing a lot of these youtube shop owners, they seems to act like celebrities and amazes me people will gift them cards and tell them how great they are and want selfies and autos. Sorry these people are nothing special. They just are people that get mega deals and sell for high prices. They are just good at marketing themselves as someone important. I don't need any advice on who I should buy or collect. Thanks for your video, because it's how I feel, but I just don't have an outlet to say it. The industry is just pumped by these shop owners/youtube content creators that want to pump values so they can dump.
