For R series lean it right and left as much as possible while draining. Not only centerstand. Maybe another half a liter comes out. The more the old stuff gets out the better
What a pleasure, doing a single hole oil change. Simple job, and great idea with the foil. 👍
Thanks for the video, Great video. You showed it all very nicely 👌. Greetings from Poland 🤝
Great video, thanks for the method you use on the GSA. Having had many cars and far fewer bikes, without ever having engine wear or engine problems, changing oil at 3 to 4,000 miles in any engine is recommended by me. One should note how much viscosity oil loses and for all those who believe this is a waste of oil, your engine oil degrades every mile and by 1,000 miles, the viscosity of your oil is around 90-95%, 2,000 miles around 85-90% and then at 3,000 miles, circa 80% at best. You chose folks, but for me, I prefer regular oil changes, because after hundreds of thousands of miles in cars and bikes, never had an engine give up on me.
well stated-- any gas videos??
Great video and love the foil idea, thanks!
I appreciate the tip with the foil. Never seen that before, pretty cool. To each his own, but that oil was pretty dang clean even for only 2400 miles. I get it though, it's hard to resist baby-ing these machines! Plus, it's fun to do maintenance. I always try and wait but end up changing on a quicker schedule than recommended too. Of course, if I didn't do my own service then I would most likely stick to the recommended schedule.
I felt like changing it because this was after the death valley trip...I didnt think it will get dirty much but i just wanted to see if there are anything after that trip.
Hi Ken. Thanks for the video. I never thought of using aluminum foil to protect the bike from oil leakage, great idea!! Thanks again.
Glad to help
Thanks Excellent Video and report. Great Job nicely done!!
Thanks. Needed clearer videos like this.
Excellent video! may you put tightening torque? Thanks a lot.
Thanks for posting this. That was a Great idea on using Tin Foil to cover the Pipe.👍 Great Job.
Great video and thanks for sharing
Thanks for sharing. I just had my 600 miles service done and the dealer charged us $480. When i look what type of service they do at that milage is seems like it's pretty much an oil change.
they should have given you a check off list- oil valve check throttle body synch drive shaft oil change and run codes computer-
Do yourself a favour.
DIY.
my family have 4 cars 2 motorcycles. I do all oil changes frequently.
It saves a fortune..
I need to change my oil tomorrow. Thanks
hello thanks for the video its very detailed, only i would like to ask what kind a wrencht did you use to remove the oil filter?(size, brand, is it type specific?)
many thanks for help
GREAT video !! looking at the r1250rs -- same engine right-- ?? any updates?
When did you fit the crush washer?
The manual says to turn it on until the fan starts and check the oil level. The fan starts at 211 F
Thank you for the video, but i did not really get on how many liters of oil did u use! Was it only 3? And doea it have to be only 3/4 full?
Hello Ken moto, I saw on 2019 bmw 1250 gs battery tenderizer/ jump start cable extension with green and red lights on it . What kind of extension cable is that?
Thanks for the video.
How much oil did you actually use it for your bike?
Thanks, appreciated it.
How much oil did you add?
Great video. Subscribed 🙏🏻
Awesome, thank you!
You change the engine oil every year, even if you only rode 1,000 miles in a year?
Any Air Filter Change videos?
Thanks for a great video. Any suggestion for where to get the oil, filter and crash washer?
The dealer
Or Sierra BMW online.
How did u reset the service message after the oil change. Some info on the tools would be helpful, thanks
Use MotoScan phone app (upgraded for $28 from free basic) together with the OBDLink MX+ (the cheaper LX version of it failed me, so I returned it). Then look for the KOMBI menu item in the app (after bluetooth connecting the connected dongle first), it lets you reset the Service Interval.
Foil great idea. Great video
Thank you! Cheers!
Hey KEN,
What did you use to loosen the oil filter?? Mine is going nowhere!
Thanks!
He had an oil filter wrench laid out with his tools, early on in his video. You can buy a specific BMW expensive one or just buy a knock-off. That’s what I use on my GS and GT bikes.
Found 4 other sources that say the drain plug should be 42nm (30fp), not 32.5nm (24fp). but otherwise good video thanks.
Excellent video, very glad to see you pointed out that not all of the oil drains out. Many automatically refill with 4 L after draining and it actually is overfilled. You did a great job, explaining how to do it properly.
Какая резина у вас на тот момент стояла и её поведение на трассе .
Hey Ken Moto!
Thanks for the Video,
What do you call that thing that you attached to your battery?
Its responsible for flashing green light.
Can you give us the part number and the brand so we can purchase it.
Thanks
I added the link in the description. also here it is: amzn.to/338fwAc
Thanks Man! Very Helpful , Do you have a facebook page? I hope you can make more videos for BMW Service.
There is one very important thing you forgot, how do you reset the service interval warning on the dashboard?
I didn't forget. I don't have a service light on. If you do, get your dealer to reset it or get a GS911 tool.
Such a nice bike however, why is the exhaust a different color? Does it not come with stainless?
Not sure what this material is but this is what bmw chose to use for this model
Good video, thanks for sharing this.
How do you clear the maintenance light?? Good vid
Didn't need to clear it in this maintenance. This is in between
You need gs911 tool
Looking at your bikes in your garage, I can tell you are some expert rider. I ride HWY 1 near Half Moon Bay to Santa Cruz, maybe I run into you one day. Thanks for your clear and helpful videos.
Not really an expert but I know a thing or two. Glad to help!
how does owning several bikes make you an expert exactly?
It doesn't. Reading is important
@@motoken I wasn't talking to you though
@@kowalski2334 Like I know what you're getting at...and I already addressed it on the reply..but you really want to dig in...I gotcha. I do smart ass things sometimes too...I see you.
Did you prime your oil filter before installing ? I have always added fresh oil into the new filter before installing it. (About 1/2 full) .
You could but I dont really do that especially with a sideways mounted filter. Just add the appropriate amount..start it and add accordingly. There's still oil in the engine...its never completely drained.
Almost impossible as filter is fitted to side of engine. Oil will pour straight out before screwing back on.
Did you only hand tighten the filter or did you use a tool and not video it? I lightly tightened (with a tool so more than hand tightened) my last filter change on an Indian Scout, and a few months later it had worked loose a bit and I had a small leak at the filter connection point. Now I am worried that I haven't been tightening the filters enough so I'm curious what your experience is?
I just hand tight the filter..they say that its about 6-8ft lbs which is just hand tight..
Assuming you changed the final drive fluid during the 600 mile service, when do you plan on changing it again? Thnaks
That's part of the 600 mile service at the dealer.
@@motoken Understood- what I'm asking is when do you plan to do the next one?
@@lennykibbs260 whenever it's required in the manual.
@@motoken Gotcha- thought, you might change at an earlier interval, since you went early with the oil change
@@lennykibbs260 the final drive oil is not something you change often..its a sealed unit.
4 liters of oil
I just knew BMW made a very poor decision to cut corners to save money by introducing Hayes front calipers, rather than the Brembo calipers they have always used, now dealers are calling some GS1250 owners for the front caliper recall where they leak oil and it can be dangerous. Okay, BMW provides 3 years warranty, but you could be in for more surprises later. I doubt my next bike will be a BMW, will move toward Honda or Yamaha now...
I took this bike from San Francisco to Death Valley and back. If anything is going to fail, it wouldve failed along that 1,300 mile round trip. And I'm still riding this bike daily with no issues.
@@motoken Good, but there is a total recall on all GS310 and some GS1250 models. Mine was not effected either. :-)
If you change bikes/brands just because of recalls then expect to be changing bikes every year. Recalls these days are common and to be expected. I really don't believe you are going to see an increase in quality or reliability by switching to Honda or Yamaha (I know you won't). Motorcycles are machines and they require maintenance and things are going to happen sometimes.
What's the drain bolt torque?
42 Nm in case anyone is reading this a year later lol
42?
Will you be making a video on how to flush the break fluid on this bike?
I wont be due for that in a long time. I'm only at 3k miles
Ken Moto My BMW dealer was pressing me to flush my break fluids at only 2,100 miles, I bought my engine oil from another BMW dealer and changed my oil on my GS1250 and will flush my break fluid at 12,000 miles. You can’t trust some dealers.
When I changed my engine oil at 2,700 miles, The oil was dirty brown not clean yellow like your engine oil, makes me wonder if they did anything on my 600 mile service!!
@Javan Dell oh wow...that's weird...yeah it should be clean from 600 miles to 3000 miles....I expect it to be clean...its tough to trust dealers...the brake fluid is not due for a long time unless you are racing the GSA...
*brake* 🤦🏼♂️
Did you buy this bike new and I assume you also reset the oil service light yourself. Any issues with the bike? Warranty issues?
This oil change is not scheduled. It's at 3k miles. The intervals are every 6k. Changing the oil doesnt void warranty.
Ken Moto Do you use a torque wrench or tighten the oil drain plug by feel? So many threads are stripping the drain plug.
@@ironhorsegladiator5034 follow the manual. Use a torque wrench.
Ken Moto I am but don’t trust my torque wrench. Will calibrate it...
@@ironhorsegladiator5034 ... Just Feel it , Tight and Nicely Snugged .
Before changing the oil let the bike run the engine for a some time...
Good video 👍
Glad you enjoyed
motul 7100 is better then the oem oil because they take cheap mineral and put a brand name and they flip it for a lot of money
Agree with comment below, 3k miles is super-anal. In a car 12k miles (20k km) with synthetic is reasonable, in a high-compression, high rpm bike something like 6k miles (10k km) should be reasonable under normal circumstance, and probably still "conservative," so if you go 10-20% over that it still should be no big deal at all. 3k miles is a waste of good synthetic oil and filter and money and time. Well executed oil change otherwise, thanks for the video Ken Moto! And nice bike too! (Mine's all black, just got it a week ago...) Also: I left a comment about resetting the Service Interval as a reply below here. I think that's something worth knowing if you don't want to splurge $400 on a GS911 tool.
definitely overkill to change oil at 3k...its more of a habit for me also after long trips. just a personal thing.
@@motoken i have done that also been riding since 1987 -- Change the oil 3k-- I have had 17 motorcycles never had an engine failure-- you people will spend 22k on a bike but not 70 bucks on an oil change???
Have you watched the VVT/multiple cams (hilarious) video on FortNine out of Canada? The best !!
ua-cam.com/video/cG8Z6RAaHb8/v-deo.html
Every 3000 miles? Why? Even my old air head had an oil change every 4000 miles.
To each their own.
@@motoken Exactly (Thumbs up on your comment). What I find disheartening is we have a video that is educational. Yet, the critics come out and pan it with totally unrelated comments.
You shouldn't add oil after turning on the engine. Now when you did that, you surely will have too much oil inside. You should add the oil when engine is cold, and only then measure it's amount in the window. Afaik it has to do a lot with all the sealings in the engine. Too much oil leads to higher working pressure, therefore possibly blowing up some of your seals in long-term usage.
Also, you can use petrol to wash the engine from left impurities. You pour it into the hole for the oil, and can run the engine for few dozens of seconds to let the petrol run through whole lubrication system. Then simply empty the engine as you did earlier with the engine oil.
Well feel free to follow your method. Mine's been working for me for years and I always end up at the middle of the sight glass. Common sense is to follow the spec of how many quarts to put in. It's really not that complex
the refill capacity on the GS/GSA is 4 quarts by the book. you will never put in 4 quarts because you will never drain all the oil from the engine. after you drain the oil you need to fill it back in carefully with the first 3 quarts....as I show on the video I was already on the half-way line at 3 quarts or so..that is because the new oil is just sitting and has not circulated to the filter..etc..YOU NEED TO START THE ENGINE to circulate the new oil to the proper areas...and then let the engine sit for a bit to see the REAL actually oil level...then you top off accordingly.
You monitor the level as you go.....I don't get how this method will ever go past the required amount of oil in the engine.
@@motoken True, but engine oil change every 3,000 miles is way too early, the oil is designed for every 6,000 mile and can even perform to 12,000 miles, but BMW recommends 6,000 or every year, whichever comes first and that too doesn't make sense, cause why drain a good oil at 2,000 miles if ridden every week but never reached 6,000 in a year is giving bad information to owners that do not ride in off road dusty conditions, its all about making money for BMW dealers, unless you race! Can you POST the Torque numbers here for the drain and pan bolts.
@@ironhorsegladiator5034 key point you're missing: I never told anybody to do what I do. I simply said THIS IS WHAT I DO....so do what you want to do. I'm simply showing my oil change process.
