FLICKER ALERT!! I’ve owned this monitor since 11/2/22 and had no problems till yesterday (11/30/22). My monitor is connected to my 16” MacBook Pro (w/ M1 Pro chip), via a Dell USB-C cord connected to the MBP’s power connector. Prior to the flickering, the only changes I made to my setup were 1) upgraded MBP’s OS to Ventura, and 2) adjusted my Dell S2722QC monitor’s “Preset mode” (brightness profile) to “RTS”. Great review, super in-depth, subbed. I just got this for photo editing, no gaming. How do I calibrate for color accuracy? The closest I came to calibration was my 2007 iMac and it was quite involved. I'm hoping it's more user friendly now. Respect, fam.
If you want to calibrate your monitor professionally, you'll want to pick up some sort of calibration tool and/or software. Otherwise, you could try playing around with your settings to see if you can find a more desirable picture quality!
Great review! Is the flickering issue still persistent with M1 Macs? Also, would you recommend a 4k or 2k monitor at 27” in terms of text clarity with a MBP 14” for programming?
Yes, it does seem like there are widespread reports of flicker when using this monitor with M1 Macs that remain accurate. However, it's worth mentioning that we haven't been able to reproduce this issue with our unit. For those dealing with the issue though, there doesn't appear to be any permanent fix at this time. Sorry about that!

I am doubting between the s2722qc and p2723qe for a dual monitor setup (the matter isn't reviewed by rtings yet). Could you give me your opinion? Thank you.

Without having our own data, we're forced to speculate, and we wouldn't want to risk providing incorrect information or negatively impact your purchase decision. Sorry about that.
Thanks for the review. Will there be any noticeable degradation in picture quality if I connect my Windows PC through HDMI instead of USB-C? I know HDMI 2.0 is limited to 4K @ 60 Hz, 8-bit 4:4:4 while USB-C (DP 1.4) can do 10-bit 4:4:4. I mostly use my PC for reading and streaming (movies, series).
Hello! In this case, there isn't a clear cut answer it really depends and could technically vary depending on what you're using it for Generally speaking though, we don't expect there to be a noticeable difference for most content!
It keep flickering on and off with my dell XP’s computer or turn to black or white or red screen , I bought directly from dell brand new one . The shipping is from their return center ,very shady.. I got a replacement under one year warranty but it doesn’t look like it is a new one either.
In the official specs the S2721QS has 1300:1 contrast ratio, while the S2722QC only has 1000:1 - but in your tests comparison page, seems like the S2722QC scores better in the contrast aspect? It shows that the S2721QS has native contrast of 1,221 : 1 while the S2722QC has native contrast of 1,304 : 1. How is this possible? Does this mean the higher official contrast ratio of S2721QS doesn't actually give an advantage here?
Hey Andrea, Technically, things like Contrast ration can vary between units and it doesn’t always line up with the advertised values from the manufacturer. In this case, the units we purchased had the contrast ration we reported. But again, this isn’t uncommon. Sometimes the monitors fail to reach the advertised contrast ratio and other times they surpass it!

I'm in the market for a newer monitor. I will use it mainly for stock trading and office work, with the occasional PS5 gaming. I noticed Dell recently released the S2723QC, would that be a better option for what I'm looking to do ? Will you guys do a review on it for me ?
Hey there, We're happy to consider this product but we seem to be having a hard time finding a product page for it. Would you be able to provide us with the link for where you saw it? :)
@@RTINGSdotcom My apologies, I figured it was the successor to the current review model s2722QC... Its called the Dell 27 inch ultra sharp U2723QE Link: dell.to/3PkkuRO
Concerning this USB-C alt mode... I have a video card that has a 1.4a display port. Would my video card 1.4a display port work with this monitor connecting to the USB-C alt port? If so I would need a bidirectional USB-C to display port cable for it to work? Is there much difference between DP 1.2 and DP 1.4? I'm trying to decide between the Dell S2722QC, the S2721QS, the P2723QE and the U2723QE LOL!
anyone here after using it for more than 6 months. screen went blank after 3 months for me. it has only 1 year warranty to get replaced. So after 1 year, if anything goes wrong.... 😥 Display going blank seems common issue with this monitor.
There is no detail in black and white. Bright scenes are very bright. There is no detail in dark scenes, the environment is too dark. How can I adjust?
Thanks for the great video! One question I've been trying to find this answer online but haven't seen it clearly stated anywhere yet... I understand this monitor has USB-C power delivery to a laptop. My laptop has a USB-C port with DisplayPort support, but it does not support charging the laptop via that USB-C port. Is it possible to still connect this monitor to the laptop via USB-C for passing the video signal and enabling the downstream USB-A ports on the monitor, knowing I would still need to use my laptops separate AC adapter for charging? I assume the connection is smart enough to still enable those video and data features without trying to charge the laptop since it's not supported on the laptop, but was hoping you could confirm that. Thanks!
I would not bother paying extra for an usb c PD monitor if your hardware won’t support it. The big thing with this feature is that you only need that one cable for image, usb ports and charging. Coming back to your question: Like any power supply it shouldn’t put out any power if the laptop doesn’t „order“ it to do so.
I have a question: is this monitor good for eye strain? Does it improve the time I can spend looking at it before my eyes get tired? I work from home and my current monitor is really subpar in this department (it is kinda old so that is the reason I think). Thank you!
That's hard to say unfortunately as eye strain is subjective and can vary between users. Some people may also be more sensitive to eye strain issues. This monitor is flicker free though, which should help with eye strain, but we can't guarantee you won't run into issues as your sensitive may be different than others!

I'm currently thinking about getting a 4k monitor, but there is one thing I'm worried about: I occasionally will use it for gaming on a laptop that doesn't have a very powerful graphics card. Upgrading the graphics card isn't an option. Playing in 4k won't be possible with that graphics card. Does anyone have experience with playing with the game at to 1080p on a 4k screen? Naively I think that this should scale up to the screen without blurriness effects as 4k is an exact multiple of 1080p resolution, so one p0ixel calculated by the laptop would be displayed by 4 adjacent pixels on the monitor. Should this work, or am I missing something? Thanks in advance!
Hello, Unfortunately monitors don't have the same upscaling processing as on TVs, so you're right that each pixel just needs to be multiplied by 4, but the image isn't as crisp as on a TV. Also, if you sit close to the screen you'll see the bluriness more, but it isn't so much of an issue if you sit further away. I hope this answers your question and let me know if you have any more!
Great review! Is this good for casual gaming x work? I tried a 1440p 27 inch Dell monitor (S2721DGF) but found the text too blurry for my liking - I'm coming from a Dell XPS 13 9730, with a 13 inch 4k monitor, so I wasn't able to adjust to the lower res. I would be using it with the laptop I mentioned, which I plan to upgrade to a PC for mixed use (maybe the XPS 8490) next year.
It's definitely a great office monitor, but when it comes to gaming, it's decent at best. So, it really depends on the sort of gaming you'll be doing. If you don't need a high refresh rate, then it *might* be worth considering. But yeah, we wouldn't recommend it for gaming. Sorry about that!
@@RTINGSdotcom thanks for responding so quick! I play most of my fast paced games on my PS4 so would need PC gaming only for Sims 4, Civ VI, and some open world games that aren’t available on PS4. What does USB-C input mean? Is this the input connected to a USB port on a computer so that the other USB-A ports on the monitor can act as a USB hub for the mouse and keyboard?
You can use this USB-C port in two ways: to display an image from a compatible laptop, and for USB passthrough with the other ports (so you can connect a mouse or keyboard to the USB-A ports and they would work with your laptop)
@@RTINGSdotcom If the same USB-C port is used for both functions -- uplink and display -- when it is plugged into a computer's USB-C or USB-A port, how does the monitor know which of the two functions to perform? I presume the monitor's OSD menu's USB-C setting is where I would explicitly tell what function the USB-C port is used for: uplink for the USB hub or for DisplayPort Alt-Mode?

Hey Sam, We definitely understand the confusion here, so we'll do our best to clear things up. It isn't something we noticed during testing, but I guess that would depend on your personal setup, how sturdy your desk is, and how aggressively you're typing.
There are no issues using this monitor with a recent Mac. On an M1 MacBook Pro, the scaling defaults to 1080p, but this is easily corrected from the 'Displays' menu. VRR and HDR are both supported properly, and there are no issues waking from sleep. We do talk about Mac Compatibility in our full reviews on our website though, so it may be worth checking out!

Same laptop and monitor - don't bother the monitor speakers are terrible - the MacBook speakers are amazing in comparison, why would you willingly use the crappier speakers on the monitor when you paid this much for a laptop with the best in class audio system.
In this case we’d recommend checking out our comparison to to compare any Monitors we’ve bought and tested. However, if you don’t see a specific product in the list, it’s because we haven’t bought and tested it yet (and therefore can’t say how they compre) sorry about that! www.rtings.com/monitor/tools/compare/samsung-smart-monitor-m8-s32bm80-vs-samsung-smart-monitor-m7-s43bm70/31330/33583?usage=3623&threshold=0.10
You can technical achieve 75hz, but there's a lot of quirks and caveats and it isn't really usable for most users. For instance, the manual states that you would have to drop it to seems like it can only do it if you drop it to really low resolutions (1280 x 1024 would be the highest resolution with a 75Hz refresh rate according to the manual). Hopefully that clears things up!
Unusable just over a year of use Turned on the screen and screen flashes between White, Red, Blue, Black. Cannot do anything. paid $575. Called Dell support and no help, tried to extend warranty and no help there either. I will never buy another Dell product
Between S2722QC and QS, does it make any differences if it’s only usb c VS hdmi? I’m using it with Mac Mini so I don’t need the charging. I read that picture quality might be affected or I may not get as many resolution options?
The Dell S2722QC is an updated version of the Dell S2721QS with many of the same features, but there are a few differences. They're built the same and have similar picture quality with an IPS panel with wide viewing angles and a 4k resolution. However, the main differences are with the inputs; while the S2722QC has a USB-C input and two USB 3.0 inputs, the S2721QS has a DisplayPort input, which the S2722QC doesn't have. The S2722QC has a slightly quicker response time, but other than that, both monitors are similar. Feel free to check out our full comparison here: www.rtings.com/monitor/tools/compare/dell-s2721qs-vs-dell-s2722qc/16917/28689?usage=3623&threshold=0.10
you don't move around windows that much during real work. You appreciate pitch perfect fonts though. You will never see a good panel with less than 5-6ms response time.
This is a garbage display. Don't recommend buying it if you a) plan to connect it to a macbook or b) hope that it lasts you for more than one year. The swivel is nice, the price is right, and for a while it might looks like it would fit your bill, but it is ridden with bugs and will be thorn on your side. Dell support is unhelpful so unless you want to ride the call-center merry-go-round, save yourself some gray hair and buy something else.
Please excuse my ignorance on USBC and T3/4 compatiblity; how do I know if the Dell S2722QC - or any other USBC monitor - will work optimally with a Macbook Pro 13" M2 with TB4 ports?
You won't have issues with the S2722QC over USB-C, but you just won't be able to use the full Thunderbolt 4 support/power because the Dell doesn't support it. That's the same case with most USB-C monitors on the market too. Hope this clears things up!

Great review, super in-depth, subbed. I just got this for photo editing, no gaming. How do I calibrate for color accuracy? The closest I came to calibration was my 2007 iMac and it was quite involved. I'm hoping it's more user friendly now. Respect, fam.
PS, 2021 MBA m1.
If you want to calibrate your monitor professionally, you'll want to pick up some sort of calibration tool and/or software. Otherwise, you could try playing around with your settings to see if you can find a more desirable picture quality!
@@RTINGSdotcom Thanks, guys. I just downloaded the Dell manual to see if I can figure out color space, etc.
@@RTINGSdotcom Thank you for the reply! I bit the bullet and bought this monitor earlier today lol Hope it'll turn out fine :)
@@egezararsiz May I ask how the monitor's been holding up? I want this to use with my Macbook Air M1 but the flickering issues seem to be pretty widespread
@@JohnasaurEatsYou hey, no issues so far. However, yesterday I plugged in my power cable when my MBP was already connected to the monitor and was charging through USB-C. Worked for a couple hours, then I saw my Mac’s screen flicker for a second every once in a while. It was normal again when I unplugged the Magsafe cable
How about with Mac mini M2 ? any flickering issue too?

Is the Dell S2722QC recommended for the Mac Mini M2?
Zero issues with m2 MacBook Air. Flawless and I’m getting Mac mini M2. How’s your experience
@@RTINGSdotcom Thanks for the reply. I'll give the monitor a try!
Why is the bottom bezel and logo so big, it used to be much thinner on the older S2719DC?
Hey Andrea,
Technically, things like Contrast ration can vary between units and it doesn’t always line up with the advertised values from the manufacturer. In this case, the units we purchased had the contrast ration we reported. But again, this isn’t uncommon. Sometimes the monitors fail to reach the advertised contrast ratio and other times they surpass it!
If I need a good monitor for image editing, please recommend some good ones. Thank you.

More monitors need to have usb c or even usb 4 port.

I'm currently thinking about getting a 4k monitor, but there is one thing I'm worried about:
I occasionally will use it for gaming on a laptop that doesn't have a very powerful graphics card.
Hello,
Unfortunately monitors don't have the same upscaling processing as on TVs, so you're right that each pixel just needs to be multiplied by 4, but the image isn't as crisp as on a TV.
You can technical achieve 75hz, but there's a lot of quirks and caveats and it isn't really usable for most users. For instance, the manual states that you would have to drop it to seems like it can only do it if you drop it to really low resolutions (1280 x 1024 would be the highest resolution with a 75Hz refresh rate according to the manual).
