I am not a fan. My husband was a fan. I gave my husband a gift for Bruce concert in Raleigh NC one year. I hated every minute. I remember a song at the concert that struck a nerve with me. I've always thought him a hypocrite even now. At time upon divorce from Ms Phillips it was "rumored" Ms Phillips she didn't want children but also he had affair. I still find him hypocritical. I couldn't tell you song but ironically my husband of 42 yrs had affair and I filed divorce. I'm same age as Ms Phillips. Springsteen is a @ss.
why did you create a title that doesn't match your content? Bruce doesn't say the affair caused his marriage to be destroyed. He just says in the book, he ended his relationship with Julianne so he could be with Patti. Their marriage was already in ruins before Bruce and Patti even started dating. Bruce and Julianne are very different.

If you're no longer happy or in love with the person you made that vow to, you end it FIRST. If you love them, but can't resist the temptation, you have enough respect to end the relationship FIRST. The level of pain inflicted as a result of infidelity is indescribable and cruel. So much worse than simply ending the relationship. It effects your ability to have a successful relationship moving forward, because the person you trusted most shatters your trust. Any relationship moving forward will be plagued by the fear of experiencing that kind of pain again. A lot of people end up lonely for the rest of their lives as a result. If you want out of your marriage get out! Be man or woman enough to leave before starting a relationship and keep your clothes on until those divorce papers are signed - some people have the discipline to do just that - they leave and then find who they’re supposed to be with- just remember how you got them is how you will lose them- cheaters always have to watch their back - there can never be full trust

Felt really bad for Julianne at the time. Apparently they weren’t divorced yet. An Italian photographer snapped a picture of Bruce and Patti on a balcony hugging each other. When he started his affair she found out about it through the tabloids and was as shocked as everyone else. She never did remarry. Bruce even says in his biography that he treated her poorly and wished he could go back and redo it.

I was a huge fan. My friend and I went there that night. Bruce, and an unknown woman were quite close to us. I could barely eat from the excitement! The chef came to my table and made small talk. This situation is kind of the reverse of the starter wife and the more beautiful, glamorous, and younger 2nd "trophy wife". Springsteen first married the trophy wife (a former model, that rock star cliche). But they came from very different worlds, and Phillips had a career in a different field and was still working. She wasn't on the tour bus every day with Springsteen. Patti Scialfa was. And Scialfa was a musician too, working with Springsteen every day. It has that element of the office affair, spending so much time together. Scialfa fits the first wife, ordinary girl stereotype. But the fact that Scialfa and Springsteen came from similar backgrounds and shared that in common as well ad their love of making music, brought them together and made them a good fit. And in the end, yes, Springsteen went back to the comfort and the feeling of staying true to his roots. He chose what he had always known, had grown up with, the hometown sweetheart. Phillips and Springsteen would never have been sweethearts in high school. Their worlds would not have collided back then.

When you play music you give yourself emotionally to your audience and bandmates as well. E Street band was as emotionally invested as it gets. That's why they were and are as tight as can be. Unfortunately it doesn't let you be emotionally available to others that might need you. It could have been that euphoria Bruce and Patty felt in the beginning when that emotional musical connection happened, but I'm glad they lasted.

I remember seeing Springsteen in concert before he had left Julianne and thinking how he had something going on with Patti. James Burton, one of worlds finest guitar players was there also. Bruce would waltz in wherever and act like the star of the show. He was friendly enough, he just didn't think he needed to do what the rest were. The musicians talked about it daily. James really carried all the amazing guitar features. Bruce has a cheater soul. He cheated the musicians he was invited to play with. He wasn't #1 in that gig, so he made himself #1 in his mind for that show.

I think its hard for everybody to have long term successful marriages. Both have to work at it and try to get through the tough times because good and bad nothing lasts forever.

I have been a long time fan of Patti and her music. She has a singular voice and her lyrics capture the feminine perspective on life events. Her first album Rumble Doll blew me away. Yes...there are lyrics in one of her songs that indicate resentment towards Julianne but also that she struggled to do what was right...till she didnt. She seems a nice person in interviews...truly not someone who would set out to hurt someone else. People are quicker to blame the woman...not sure why. I will say this...they did not give Julianne a lot of dignity at the time.

If you're no longer happy or in love with the person you made that vow to, you end it FIRST. If you love them, but can't resist the temptation, you have enough respect to end the relationship FIRST. The level of pain inflicted as a result of infidelity is indescribable and cruel. So much worse than simply ending the relationship. It effects your ability to have a successful relationship moving forward, because the person you trusted most shatters your trust. Any relationship moving forward will be plagued by the fear of experiencing that kind of pain again. A lot of people end up lonely for the rest of their lives as a result. I've lived it for 16 years after 22 years of marriage... Was never able to regain my self confidence or trust men again... Which is probably the same reason his ex-wife never married again. There's NEVER an excuse for it.

This situation is kind of the reverse of the starter wife and the more beautiful, glamorous, and younger 2nd "trophy wife". Springsteen first married the trophy wife (a former model, that rock star cliche).
But they came from very different worlds, and Phillips had a career in a different field and was still working. She wasn't on the tour bus every day with Springsteen. Patti Scialfa was. And Scialfa was a musician too, working with Springsteen every day. It has that element of the office affair, spending so much time together.
Scialfa fits the first wife, ordinary girl stereotype. But the fact that Scialfa and Springsteen came from similar backgrounds and shared that in common as well ad their love of making music, brought them together and made them a good fit. And in the end, yes, Springsteen went back to the comfort and the feeling of staying true to his roots. He chose what he had always known, had grown up with, the hometown sweetheart. Phillips and Springsteen would never have been sweethearts in high school. Their worlds would not have collided back then.

(First), Bruce and Patti have known each other since Patti was 17 years old. Bruce suggested that Patti finish school and join the band. They met again in 1980 and at that time began to become friends. Then joined the band in 1984 long before Bruce knew Julianne.
(second), Bruce and Julianne's marriage was in ruins and Bruce wrote the song Tunnel of Love about his unhappiness with Julianne. Patti had nothing to do with it as she planned to leave the band and focus on her solo career.
(third) Bruce and Julianne were often separated, in the book Born to Run it is explained, when his wife was filming, Bruce went to a bar and she said that he was not a married man. They grew apart
(fourth) in Bruce's book Born To Run, when he was with Patti in September 1987, that's when he felt something in his heart. After the tour started, this is where Bruce began to fall in love with Patti, saying "Patti might be his new heart".
(fifth) At first Bruce just felt like he and Patti were "just the thing". Until he realized that Bruce and Patti were serious, he then honestly told Julianne that he wanted to end the relationship so that he could be with Patti. So bruce ended his old relationship to start a new realtionship with patti.
(sixth/most important) photo of Bruce and Patti while in Rome, it all happened after his separation from Julianne. So it's not cheating because Bruce and Patti are starting a serious relationship here. Bruce only admitted that he decided not to tell the public about his breakup with Julianne because it was his personal relationship. He regrets that he didn't tell the public beforehand, which caused people to think the photos were scandalous. If only Bruce had told the public about their separation, people wouldn't have thought negatively.

Bruce first chose the aspirational wife, the uptown, glamorous wife (Julianne) who was part of the new lifestyle of the rich and famous.
But it wasn't what he grew up with and what he felt deeply connected to and felt "at home" with. Patti was much more in line with that, sharing a lot in common with Bruce, from their shared lifelong devotion to music, as musicians (whereas Julianne was a model turned actress), their touring, late night musician lifestyle, and their similar backgrounds. He must have felt a much stronger connection and bond with Patti.
In another world where neither became famous, they met in high school, joined a band together and performed in local bars, got married and lived in a small house in their hometown.
He has a type! Longish red and dark blonde hair, slim, artsy! He sounds like an old man TV character, but still has looks!

When Bruce was invited to play with Roy Orbison for Black & White Night, he was above coming to rehearsals along with the rest of the extraordinary musicians. My father played piano for it. James Burton, one of worlds finest guitar players was there also.
Bruce would waltz in wherever and act like the star of the show. He was friendly enough, he just didn't think he needed to do what the rest were.
The musicians talked about it daily. James really carried all the amazing guitar features.
Bruce has a cheater soul. He cheated the musicians he was invited to play with. He wasn't #1 in that gig, so he made himself #1 in his mind for that show.

Until he tried to find a new partner while he was still Julianne's wife as they grew apart, Julianne is acting and Bruce is at the bar. In the book he has told it. Until he started to get serious with Patti and ended his relationship with Julianne.

Bruce also said "The Surreptitiousness didn't last long" meaning they were already together during the Tunnel of Love tour and no one knew and Bruce kept the secret for only a short time and according to my guess, Julianne wasn't there. That's why Bruce started trying to be with Patti and when he got serious he told Julianne everything and wanted to separate. Springsteen kept the secret perhaps while he was on tour. Tried to tell Julianne after the concert and maybe meet her in person. Springsteen was seen taking off his wedding ring during a concert in New York.

Bruce humiliated his wife, who loved him, on the world stage. Terribly selfish & cruel; I think he's disgusting. That is not the way a real man behaves. If he had feelings coming on for an outsider he should have removed the woman from the situation, or let Julianne get out of the marriage on her own terms, before creating a new relationship. They showed no more self control than a couple of dogs.

I have been a long time fan of Patti and her music. She has a singular voice and her lyrics capture the feminine perspective on life events. Her first album Rumble Doll blew me away. Yes...there are lyrics in one of her songs that indicate resentment towards Julianne but also that she struggled to do what was right...till she didnt. She seems a nice person in interviews...truly not someone who would set out to hurt someone else. People are quicker to blame the woman...not sure why. I will say this...they did not give Julianne a lot of dignity at the time.

Very true, you need to be two to tango... And Julianne Phillips ended up with ex-hubby's assets, his fortune being very likely what attracted her, especially as she wanted to have an acting career and that marrying Springsteen put her on the map.

There is no denying Julianne and Bruce were married when he and Patti became close. That was merely a piece of paper.
Bruce was already drawing away, hurting Julianne. The pain. The confusion. It seems Miss Phillips has amazing friends. There has not one tell-all interview from her friends and family.
As to not talking bad about one another. That is the least Bruce could do after the hurt and pain he brought.
As to he and Patti, that was not happily ever after. Bruce remained afraid of true intimacy. It is something he had to work through.
