Great interview. If you're reading this and you have tickets for a Tool concert, i envy you and wish you a fu*king awesome time!
Sup Lie, love your channel✌
@@cloudbloom Hey just watching vids. Thanks :)
Aw man you're not going? I have tix for 2 shows and am so fn stoked its ridiculous.
Thanks! Going to their opening show next year and it’s my first Tool concert! Looking forward to it.
Definitely going
The look on Maynard's face when she says "there's a lot of boring questions out there." PRICELESS!
Especially after her first question didn't land as planned lol! Gotta be a tough interview for her too no doubt.
yeah he suffers no fools
Haha. Definitely why usually he never allows TOOL questions, at all. Gotta say, if he thought mine sucked, trust me - he would have got off the call quicksmart, and never allowed me to mention TOOL. Not saying I asked everything I wanted to, but gave it good crack.
which doesn't translate to he's difficult to interview at all, it translates entirely to "there's a lot of idiots out there ego projecting and it wears an artist thin quick" how is this being misinterpreted, it's even in his music.
"Your opinion doesn't matter in the kitchen. F*@% off. Dinner's served."
Truth. Lol
Shout out to her talent as an interviewer, MJK ain't an easy cat to deal with.
Thank you! Definitely a dance. Hope you enjoyed it!
@@revolver awesome
Not an easy person to interview at all. I think it's because he's a say what you mean and mean what you say kinda individual and has no time for bs. I like that about him. When famous people are interviewed the person asking the questions is sometimes too busy kissing ass or asking stupid questions. Ain't nobody got time for that. Ask intelligent questions and stop treating celebs like they're the second coming 🙄
Absolutely. Agree wholeheartedly. My mentor said that a good interviewer isn't a fan, but a curious and well-informed stranger. It is incredibly hard to turn off your fan side, especially when talking to someone who you have enjoyed since the age of 14, but I did my best. Can only try to do better.
One thing worth noting here is this is my third Maynard interview. This was the first time I was even allowed to mention TOOL, but only in the context of his overall history as a fan. I was so conscious that if I went too hard here I could easily lose him. That doesn't mean that I haven't been kept up at night by the fact I didn't ask the below. I hope one day I get to do a TOOL deep dive with him, and also give fans the opportunity to submit their own questions.
The ones I wish I asked:
Your first band Children of the Anachronistic Dynasty included a prescient manifesto with its first $5 tape. What you mention here is reflected in the lyrical content of "Aenima." What other artists’ manifestos played into your thinking while writing that? How does it feel to know you were on the path, then?
It took Tool seven shows to get signed. Who were the coolest people who liked your band that early?
You said the primal scream was the key to making it sound sincere in your book. Who are the screamers you most admire?
Thanks for watching dudes, and taking the time to comment. It means a lot, I just want to do right by you guys, and honour the privilege it is to spend time with my idols.
@@revolver Indeed. Beautifully said.
I can relate to alot of Maynard's lyrics, he definitely helps me through the hard times. Every song is a piece of art instead of just a song for the most part.
I am glad Maynard did this interview, his tone doesn’t imply he was excited to do it, more like, I have chores to do like ducks to feed and vineyards to manage. As a hardcore Maynard fan, I clicked this video looking for something I haven’t seen or heard from Maynard before, but in the end he delivered and I respect what he’s carved out in his life and the inspiration he has generated for artists and fans alike through all these years. I like that he didn’t sell the farm and compels everyone to spiral out, and keep going.
J-Jim?
That’s Maynard’s vibe at all times.
Me as well!!
He sounds like that in most, if not all, of his interviews. I think that's just his tone. He sings a lot, if think he would find the least exhausting way of speaking, that'd be my guess.
Me too! Maynard interviews are EXTREMELY RARE
When he turned the camera to the KISS pinball machine after talking trash about them. 😆😅😅 Priceless!
He’s been wearing a kiss tee shirt. One of their faces from those four solo albums I believe. I can sit here and claim it’s ace but I cant say I’d be right.
Maynards humor, knowledge, artistic meaning, and spiritual being is someone i can totally vibe with. His art has helped me grow as a human. Thank you Maynard! ✌🏽
Oh my gosh,, so that self centered vocalist is all it take's to alter your life?? Also, he doesn't have a spiritual bone in his body,,only negativity
@@jefferystrain3210 LOL
He's very tough but fair. I'm starting to learn IT, it's a long road for me, and his wine documentary and how he started from zero is inspiring. The patience, work ethic and not taking yourself too seriously is important to keep in mind on a long goal.
Maynard says “Hard No”… That’s what I appreciates about him
Can confirm
Nice ref
She brings out the best in Maynard. That's as close to excited as you'll get from him. Good interview.
This chick is an amazing interviewer! I'd be all like,
"Remember TOOL?...That...That was awesome..."
I'd be exactly what he hates lol.
Lol
"If someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time" - a friend of his named Dave (unfortunately, Dave floated away)
I love that Maynard said he and Carina are like twins. I've tried to shove her music in people's ear holes by saying "she's Maynard with a wig". Seriously, if you haven't heard her solo work, do yourself the favor.
But he frequently wears wigs...?
The asshole circumference line was vivid as hell, haha. She is spectacular.
Agreed, the Carina/Maynard pair is something I never thought I wanted in life, but there is something special when together.
@@99bajakid When I first saw Maynard's dancing, it was a '98 concert and I had binoculars...still couldn't see their faces, but the drumming and Maynard's dancing were visible and awesome to watch!...then years later Carina came and mirrors him on stage and it's weird and badass! They're twins on that level on stage lol.
He is himself with a wig
Fabulous interview. He's a guest that too many interviewers waste precious time with due to shallow curiosity or lack there of. This interview took advantage of what he as to offer.
As a fellow Aussie I am so envious of you to score an interview with Maynard. Great questions and brilliant interviewing 🤘❤🎵
And what a huge brilliant dinner it is. Big ups to mjk for doing this piece. "Know thyself/ hard no the spiritual theft" , Serena and Iryna, Joni and Nina! Mjk knows the recipe. "Allow it"
Absolute huge fan of mr Maynard. Can’t wait to awe TOOL in January! First day of the tour in Oregon. Baby!! Yeah!!!!
Same! Oregon!
Can not wait for Eugene! And tacoma the next night 🤘🏼🌀
Seeing them in feb! Can’t wait!
Be cool to meet everyone.just not that show.
Me too!! So excited and happy the tour has restarted. I have tix to 2 shows. So pumped 🤘🤘🤘
This and the It's Electric interview are the two best I've seen of Maynard. Well done.
I love the way he starts off the conversation by steering it into no bullshit.
@49:30 some of Maynard's expressional lyrics in Rosetta Stoned are from Bill Hicks' special titled 'Relentless'. "Picture this if you will" & "Stealth banana"
Cool interview, well done!
Seen Tool 3 times live and hope to see again after this DARN COVID!!!
Did you? I just saw them for the 6th time. Could have been 7 but I missed 2017. Could have been more if I went to multiple shows during those tours but I’m broke. Next time I’m road tripping around for a few. Praying they drop a gem like undertow for the first time in 20 years like they just did. While I can drop 500 on vip or 200-300 on close floor seats I’d rather get a single ticket to 5 different shows and drive around sleeping in my car.
One of the best interviews ever for artists... thank you to the both of you.
We're all DEVO
I wish they could get him on Hot Ones - not only would the questions be good but I think Maynard would be an entertaining watch
That would be epic
He wouldn't do it. But Justin might...
I'd love to see that, it seems like the sort of thing he'd be up for doing, with him being such a foodie.
Thanks for the interview, really enjoyed it.
Musicians such as Maynard have a great talent. They can feel the world and explain it through their eyes.

Thoughtful questions and smart enough to let the man talk...here’s a crisp virtual high-five.
My all time favorite band is Tool but love Maynard's other bands as well. Deftones "Passenger" with Maynard is very amazing
Maynard wearing a Letterkenny t-shirt. Much Respect!
I love him more for his take on kiss. 100% spot on
This was so good I couldn't stop watching it.
Cool interview, props to the interviewer - that was a fun and interesting interview. I've been hearing a lot of "take chances, make mistakes, get messy" messages lately, it was interesting to hear MJK reinforce that. Very true.
My only complaint is there were no Letter Kenny questions - I honestly think that is one of the smartest/funniest shows as of late. It is so damn relatable, and certainty has that 'x' factor of purity/honesty.
Love hearing the ace respect his playing is so good on those first few
"pretentious horse shit" lol omg had me in hysterics!
This is beyond awesome, you are one of the best interviewers I have ever encountered. You are very insightful, and your questions seem thought out and genuine. Huge fan.
Awesome interview 👍 thanks Maynard - Revolver
Normally I don't like the interview style of this lady, but I have to say this sit down with Mr. Keenan is stellar. Excellent job, excellent interview.
Always encouraging to hear great advice on making art and connecting things from the head of a great band.
Maynard hasn’t been significant since Green Jello !
Adam said they usually have to tell Danny to take a down a notch and make it more simple. That says a lot.
Many of our Rock & Metal heroes who were influenced by KISS were primarily Ace Frehley fans. MJK, Morello, Slash, Dime, John 5 and many others. It's a testament to how Ace brought the "Cool Factor" to be a KISS fan. He was the heart and soul of KISS, period!
Loved this interview!
Appreciate you trying to squeeze out some Tool secrets, but to no luck of course haha. And amazing how he throws Gene under the bus. Enjoyed it very much. Cheers!
16:03 "It doesn't have a _cornerstone_ yet." Well, Maynard, maybe if you were to _clutch it like_ a cornerstone, you could change the process, otherwise it might all come down... 😎🤓
I see what you did there 🤣🤣🤣
Great job interviewing. I enjoy when he’s comfortable enough to open up and reveal his own very special sense of humour. We also got to find out what his intro Sabbath album was!
The best thing to come out of Ravenna no doubt! Thanks for all your knowledge and Nelson's ledges cool
I enjoy all of your hard work and dedication too teach and entertaining 🤓🤓
I hope this one is as good as the one you just did with Buzz Osborne, that was awesome.
Although, it's Maynard, so it should be interesting; he's a well of wisdom.
Ok, with that shirt, Maynard really needs to play Roald's dad on Letterkenny.
Yes! I will vote for that!
Doesnt he??!! 😂😂
ROALDS DAD. I am DEAD. 💀
That would be fucking hilarious. I’m all for it hahahaha.
I love to see it in oregon maybe next year... 🤟🏾🇵🇭
Great interview........Pretty spot on about how a lot of Tool fans, or a kind fan at least, don't get MJK's humor it seems. Like on the last tour. They would give everything they have to the audience for almost two hours, then MJK would tell security to stand down and everyone could pull their phones out to record the next song.......then they would play Stinkfist......seemed pretty funny to me. I don't even take my phone into concerts, I'm there to dance my ass off and enjoy the experience.
That's not funny
Totally agree
@@paullayfield No, that's absolutely funny. One of the core themes across Tool is opening yourself to the moment, present and immersed in the totality of the now. The very notion of trying to record the concert on a smart phone is anathema to that journey of self-discovery. It's a non-offensive joke at the expense of those who are just there to wild out and are not able or willing to explore the deeper nuances of Tool's artistic value.
@@jacobr7964 well yeah but I just looked at as allowing dipshits to record at the end of the show. I wouldn't want to stand at a show holding my phone the whole time to record something & be distracted from the experience. Although there is a Tool show from the 90s that someone recorded with a video camera at JC Dobbs in Philly & I'm glad they did because it's pretty fucking amazing
Precisely all the while recording at a good angle discreetly...
TOOL in concert. 23 of april 2022 in Royal Arena, Copenhagen, Denmark. 🇩🇰
maynard we lova you, your great human, wish u all the best my man
Well this was a pleasant surprise.
Pusifer's 'Existential Reckoning' and Steven Wilson's 'The Future Bites' are two albums released around the same time are two fantastic, yet ironic albums that almost parallel each other in mood and subject matter.
i cant belive two of my fav artists Maynard & Dimebag are Kiss fans!
Great interview, took a while to get through to him but you managed it pretty well I thought! I once had the privilege of interviewing Danny at a listening party before the release of 10,000 Days and was slightly relieved, as interviewers were either given slots with Danny, or Maynard and Justin together. Often wondered how I would have gone with Maynard, as the interviewer in that slot while I was talking to Danny said it was really hard work. I did speak to Justin briefly separately afterwards and he was really cool, friendly and down to earth. I think Maynard actually is too, if you build some kind of rapport with decent questions and conversation. Anyway well done, enjoyed the interview!
Going to the concert here in Tacoma in January. Can't wait
Great job, Tina!!
The letterkenny shirt is great. This was a great video, thank you!
I am going to see Tool for the second time this May. The first time in 2019 I carried around my baby girl in my belly (I was 7 months pregnant) maybe this time will happen something similar.. What a way to start a life :)
Great interview
Ohhhhh shitttt Christina is

Ya she actually shut up when she needs too plus she is adjusting to the guy. Great job!
It’s not her first interview with James

Great Interview What a Legend MJK 👏
Or MJK but we get what you're saying
You are right thanks
Maynard's patience with these questions
I didn’t think it was that bad, could sense some anxiety though! To be expected tbh.

Holy shit an interview. Leave it to Maynard to require headphones to hear wtf he’s saying , meanwhile my neighbor can hear her because I got it up so loud. 😂. Love it.

Probably cuz the riff was easily translated to sound like tool.
I remember hearing Maynard say his favorite plant vocals are in the evening (maybe it was another member)
Anyway I can’t imagine tool covering black dog or the ocean or Kashmir. Even apc covering when the levvee breaks is weird to me it’s not bad but not as special as no quarter.

Nice one Christina!
Little upset she didn't ask him if there could be a Maynardville. She asked Buzz if there could be a Buzzywood, and I was all for it. Brilliantly inspiring conscious thought. "THINK FOR YOURSELF!"
Dude. Asking Buzz if he'd be down with having a theme park created in his name was the most random question to come to my mind in 14 years of doing this, but you're bloody right. That question's worth a repeat. I would LOVE to go to Maynard's theme park, that would be an absolute trip. Thanks for watching - CR

I fuckn love Maynards shirt!
Jim is different than most other artists. I went to HS with him and we wrestled on the team together for 2 or 3 years. We could have become good friends, but I guess we had those already. Most artists are misfits in school, (and if rational, that is where all individual greatness comes from),---like I was more like, (never got over being the new kid I guess). But Jim wasn't a misfit, not that I saw in 3 years anyway. He fit in pretty good with everybody, and was his own man (young man), at the same time. I remember asking him, when were were talking about a cute gal who like him and he liked a bit I think to, "What would you do if you were out and she pulled out a joint?" He said, "Then I would not see her anymore.". No!--that is a good thing! But I guess that changed in GR art school. (Sorry Jim, for either direction there man, smiling here) The only thing I saw that pointed into a career of Music, was the Kiss posters plastered on the inside of his locker walls/door. Lots of people did well with Music, (I don't know how many know why though), and I love to see people doing well in what they love to do. But Jim is different. He could have been great at anything he set his mind to, from sports, (what we do when we were not taught math), to top achievers of a free society. I know it, and I am sure he knows it.
But here is something else I know. We have all been sabotaged by the progressive movement, (Stop it. I know what I am taking about),---and with a brain in our head, (does not come with a college degree today), the free enterprise system in our hands, (where it started, and could only start), and the freedom of the citizens to compete in that free enterprise system, -------------------we all could have done better. Every one of us, even if your hair is purple. :)
You told me you loved the song in the locker room Jim. Play a version of it. "Dream on, Dream until your dreams come true." (even though we know that also takes action, as you have proven well sir. Congrats).
Doug in Michigan
Got weird tbh
Love the letterkenny shirt!
