The Stronghold was never one of my favourite factions in HoMM 3. Their music, however, was the PINNACLE of beauty and excellence... arguably even more so than the Rampart.
I always liked the Stronghold since they were dirt cheap and had a strong collection of monsters for the price, including Ancient Behemoths, which are unstoppable given some magic support. This theme song captures the might of the Ancient Behemoths, and the Stronghold in general, especially at 1:17-1:35.
I think even better, Stronghold's music isn't just beautiful, but incredibly DESCRIPTIVE! This music just conjures, even without the visuals, images of barbarians, stoic nobility, yet brutality. If Conan the Barbarian could be described in a single piece, this would be it.
I love the way this theme distinguishes the "neutral" Barbarians of 3 from the "evil" Barbarians of 1 and 2 - it doesn't sound like a rampaging horde ready to wreak havoc but rather evokes thundering across great stretching plains, wind in your hair, looking for a battle worthy of boasting about in the tavern that night.
Considering that they are a noble and proud faction, that is not inherently evil but more neutral I find it befitting. And if you look at the campaigns involving them, especially the ones with Tarnum it is easy too see why it fits so well.
@@Malisa1990 Couldn't agree more. Unlike in Enroth where they supported Archibald the barbarians of Antagarich wasn't allied with the undead or the Kreegans. They just fought for themselves. This theme fits perfect for a faction that is neither good nor evil and are all about might, not magic.
@@Esmelie Technically it is, though the HoMM series severely downplayed the sci-fi aspect of the main series. I mean, the Kreegans are here to host Inferno, and the Tower does have "robots" in the form of golems, but outside of that you don't get much sci-fi out of HoMM. I haven't gotten that far into the campaigns for HoMM 3 yet, but you don't exactly descend into old abandoned research facilities, and you can't acquire Blasters since they retconned the hell out of MM7's Dark ending due to the negative reception of Forge in the pre-release presentation of Armageddon's Blade. (I could probably write a book on how I think Armageddon's Blade should have been handled, but I've already written many posts on the matter already)

The reason I love this music most in the series is because of it's lack of drums and loud horns despite being a music for faction of orc and goblins. Instead it is a majestic orchestral piece that is full of honor, power and glory.

I played the demo too, back when it first came out, and also remember hearing this BGM. I like the Castle BGM, but I think this fits the Castle better.
That makes so much sense. Ever since I played Heroes 3 in the 90s I thought this theme sounded so much more like righteous humans than tough barbarians. I could see this or the actual Castle town theme being used for the Castle town. Another commenter here pointed out though that this helps convey the vibe the barbarians are supposed to have in Heroes 3 which is that of a neutral faction. We're so used to thinking of them at chaotic and evil. This helps change that. Closed-minded, child me in the 90s didn't like that idea. But now I can appreciate it.
I think this was always my favourite town because of this amazing music. I would just let the town open and sit idle doing nothing, besides listening to this beauty.
Stronghold: - Epic music that plays when a war hero enters an arena, turns his face to the sun to call upon Krom, and readies his sword to face an Ancient Behemoth in hand to hand combat! Ending symbolises the victory of barbarian determination and strength over the power of the beast!
Even after all these years I still can't believe how beautiful it is. A lot of game music is cool, even really cool. But little of it is truly beautiful.
homm 3, civ 3, patrician 3, doom, fallout 1&2, popolous 3, anno 1602, Ultima Online ... the list is endless, the 90's brought out the most epic games ever. You just felt the love in every single pixel. Nowadays sadly its all about appealing to the maximum audience and cashgrabbing. In most games nowadays you just feel, that they're just done for money. Dont get me wrong back then the goal was also to get profit and survive. But you felt that every little thing, the smallest detail is thought trough with love and perfection. So many things in those games that only get discovered by multiple playtroughs and stuff. If you take every awesome gamesoundtrack after ~2008 there wont be even close enough soundtracks to compare to a single 90s game soundtrack. When you remembering old games you immedieatly are back at the songs and remember every detail and how epic it was. And modern games will be forgotten in 10 years. They're fun maybe some hours they look cool and have a high budget, but they're in no way something you remember. It's sad, if you would give nowadays budget to old times developers, just imagine what epic games could come trough. 95% of modern games i'll never forget are either indie games or mods. Its just sad. On the bright side, i always can come back to the good old games.
Not really nostalgiafag when you consider that studios back then used to favor creation and artistic freedom on their devs. Rather than have the people above them put their say in the projects. Nowadays, you have people who know very little about video games put their say and even outright force them unto the the devs, put time constraints and pressure them into doing not what the devs wish to do but what they want because they believe it will make money, only for it to fail and blame it on the devs and fire them as a result.
Despite this town’s primal look, just some shaped stones in a valley… the most cheerful music I’ve heard. Brings so much hope for them Barbarians and Orc-ish beings. I still believe Stronghold has the best suited music theme ever. Not that every homm3 cities audio being suited very well, this one actually makes me happy just by visiting the town. 3DO should last forever, Ubisoft ruined this game imo

This music is more in line with the Conan the Barbarian/Cimmerian theme of blond nordic warriors than green skinned orcs, ogres and goblins despite the heavy presence of such creatures in Krewlod. Maybe the creators of this game initially wanted to put in more "conan type" proud barbarians but eventually scrapped the idea for an entirely beastly army.

Maybe the creators of this game initially wanted to put in more "conan type" proud barbarians but eventually scrapped the idea for an entirely beastly army.
Beautiful
This game is magic 😊
It sounds as wild as it sounds delicate. A perfectly well-balanced beauty.
always the best
Beautiful and grandeur

great game, great music
Lots of games have magic in them. But HoMM 3 feels like it actually IS magic.

Tarnum was a barbarian king before he became the immortal hero...
