I always figured they were more based on the Japanese Nuppeppō yokai. The blob-like shape and stench being giveaways. Though they're described in Japanese folklore as being harmless, just alarming and stinky. The comparison to corpulent lemures might well be closer.
@crusty_cannibal yeah honestly when I was researching them I initially went to certain yokai like thr Nuppeppo, but with the added insect swarms and stench I realized they likely took the name and blob aspect, made it more evil stinking flesh monster, and tied it to the Roman beliefs of different devils/souls in the Underworld!
