Lemmo rules! Never disappointed! Thank you Michael! Never knew a Kay could sound that good! That was awesome! I think I’ll watch it again!
That thing kills! What a sound!
I was just looking at the amount of videos Michael has done. Is there anyone on planet Earth that has played with more guitars than Michael? lol
Mark Agnesi? 🤣🙈
The guitar tech in the same store lol he's gotta play almost all of them in the store
Greg Koch
Is there anyone who says um more..? Crikey there were a shitload of them in the intro. (".)
Very unique guitar and tones ! I think a slide would sound incredible wíth that sound !😊
Thinking that same thing!
Dang skippy!
The pickups were made by Kay, and they're commonly called "Speed Bump" Pickups. People sometimes confuse them for one specific type of Gibson P13, but they're *not* the same inside, nor do they look the same outside. The Kays have more rounded corners in the centerpiece, the Gibsons are more rectangular.
@@101Volts, Kay apparently made all their own pickups in-house, even though some of them might superficially resemble DeArmond pickups (Nathaniel Adam's website on compares a bunch of Kay pickups to various DeArmond pickups and finds them to be quite different). I haven't personally owned any Kay guitars before but I recently found a free solidbody hardtail electric Kay at the dump which has the extremely uncommon black- painted "star" pickups; it's American made and from the date codes on the pots and pick ups appears to be from late 1966, which is when Seeburg briefly owned Kay (but before the company was bought by Valco)). It has a height-adjustable wooden saddle, hardtail bridge, rosewood fretboard, 3-bolt neck with truss rod, an unusual V-shaped metal headstock logo that differs from all the others, a Gibson-like 3 on a side headstock, Kluson tuners (made in Mexico), two vol and two tone pots with gold plastic "Barney Kessel"-era knobs (now crumbling) and a 3 way switch, a solid-wood body shaped a bit like an offset SG, and an odd brownburst edge over a dark butterscotch tan-yellow. I have looked at many hundreds of photos of Kay guitars online and I can't find one remotely like it. The only guitar I've seen with that same style pickup was a single pick up guitar that otherwise looks nothing like this one, and I've seen a couple of the "star" pickups themselves being sold on Reverb. It only had 2 strings on it when I got it which is fortunate because they kept the bridge saddle from falling off and disappearing. I cleaned it up a little bit but haven't yet had a chance to evaluate it electrically or restring it. The only parts missing are the chrome bridge cover and one tuner bushing. It has a 25 and 3/4" scale. Hopefully the pick up's work. There's no groundwire for the bridge and strings, which is something that will have to be addressed, and the huge rout in the body is halfway to an Olympic size swimming pool! I'll be shielding it for sure.....
"It had a logo but it's cool it doesn't have it anymore... it's more stealthy". Good one Mike dude...hehehe
That is one of the best guitar demos I’ve ever seen. So creative and so much feel. Thanks!
The Speed Demon has a 4 way switch. The last position gives you all pickups on. Volume and tone controls are independent, so you can dial in all pickup combinations or any shade in between.
A very iconic guutar in looks and sound..the playability is awesome. And these were considered less than back in the day..but they were coveted by a frew loyalists..great playing again by Sir Lemon...greatly appreciated this post keep up the great work !!!!
His skills are well-known, but Michael really knows how to pick music matching the soul of an instrument.
Nice Sounding Guitar,Well Done.
A fun competitor with the 1960 Silvertone Rocket. I play this type with more expensive guitars left hanging on the wall.
That is cool for a Kay guitar! I’m impressed! Let’s go Blues Man! Very cool set!
Nice guitar! Strumming sounds with some Lemmo Stripes!! 🎉
Just Wow! Stunning!
Great guitar great playing
If I ever make it to heaven I want to play guitar like Michael. He is unbelievable.
If there were any supergroups still around touring I can't think of one who wouldn't want him to join.
Nice delta blues sound
amazing vibes
2 weeks ago, you would never in a million years expect to see a Kay guitar featured on Norm's GOTD, but after seeing some of the prices that weird-ass late 60's Danelectro guitars in Mark Knopfler's collection went for at auction, I guess it's OK now. Early Danelectros going for $30,000, I mean, whaaa?
David Lindley was playing Silvertone, Danelectro, Supro and Teisco guitars 50 years ago, but sadly he never had the name recognition of Knopfler or Jack White, despite being able to play rings around Jack White and being a much more versatile player than Knopfler. Lindley had one hell of a musical instrument collection and I wonder what has or will happen to it now that he passed away last year.
That’s a uniquely great sound. I would prefer it over a Tele or LP any time.
Two of its features are also in a guitar model I ordered in Jan. 2024, a Burns replica of the Brian May Special. They include play semi-hollow chambering and the three pickups. Those are key features of Brian's guitar and its various replicas.
A little Magic Sam style on that bridge set
Don’t get me wrong I love these guitars, but the Vintage Scene is suffering when Department Store guitars enter the mix. That said I have 2 old Silvertone u-1s in my living room for slide lol
This really COOL, I know a guy locally Raiford Starke who gigs with one of the similar ones, his a Silvertone Harmony. Gets Great tones and his has the Bigsby. I think Keith Richards used a meteor Kay/harmony in the early Stones for a while.
Nice demo as always, But I wish you would share SOME info about the Guitar besides what is already apparent. We didn't even see the back.Set Neck? Bolt- on? Tuner types? SOMETHING other than " cool guitar".
Bolt on neck. Killer tone from these old guitars.
@@Gratefulman1965 Thanks! I did know that, but the point is everyone might NOT know that. Asking for at least a description of the hardware, pickups, finish, What the back looks like. etc. Doesn't have to be a Mark Agnesi level breakdown - just a little homework and/or more info we be nice.
It amazes me that when looking at vintage amplifiers on Reverb, the majority of sellers don't even list all the tube types!
Sweet!,
Cool, I’ve never seen a Kay before. I know quite a few people who started out with a Kay in the 60s, but this is the first one I’ve ever seen
Lemmo is a great player, thanks. Ive been away for a while and I was wondering were is Jan?
Speed Demon! So metal!
Great playing great job🎉 that guitar won't last long 👍
It’s looking good
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Has an early White Stripes vibe to me
Fucking Brilliant
❤
Can all three pickups be engaged at the same time? ..and/or different combinations of Two pickups at the same time?
That guitar isn't going to last long. GREAT ML demo.
Is that Magic Sam's Boogie?
Who else just searched the classifieds for a Kay…. 😂🤘🤘
Nice guitar
🆗
Who's the video person? Haven't been here in awhile.
What is the one he play at 5:17 I know it and play it but don't remember the name? Thank you. I think that it have boogie in the name...but not sure
so you can pick one of 3 pickups. how do you select 2 of 3 or 3all three?
Quick, sell it to Jack White. Right up his alley.
Josh Homme and Dan Auerbach would go for it
That thing has got a ton of mojo
Vibbie guitar.... Good change of pace guitar.
👍✌❤😎
What happened to Jen? Haven’t heard her for several weeks now.
She recently had a baby so likely on maternity leave.
What’s that dial/switch on the upper bass side bout?
Pickup selector.
3 SPEED BUMP P 15 PICK UPS
Definitely Black Keys tone.
Wow how much? Probably gone already….
Does it even have rubber frets, dog?
I HAVE THE EXACT SAME INSTRUMENT WITH THE ORIGINAL CASE AND BOTH ARE IN DEAD MINT CONDITION
THOSE ARE P 15 PICK UPs
