  • Ammoudia Beach - Preveza 4K
The village of Ammoudia is located at the mouth of the river Acheron, 45 km from Preveza and 20 km from Parga. Administratively it belongs to the Municipality of Fanari in the Prefecture of Preveza and is bathed by the waters of the Ionian Sea.
Ammoudia due to its position came under the ownership of various conquerors, Turks, Venetians, Pirates, Italians.
In 1919 it was recognized as a community of the Greek state under the name Splantza. The name Splantza comes from the Italian word Spiaggia which means beach, sandy beach and comes from the long sandy beach that stretches in the bay of the village.
In 1928 it was renamed Ammoudia, originally belonging to the Prefecture of Thesprotia. Since 1946 it now belongs to the Prefecture of Preveza.
The first inhabitant settled in Ammoudia around 1450 near the hill Gortsoula, while the village was actually inhabited in 1700.
According to mythological tradition, the area belonged to the power of the subterranean deities, inhabited by the Cimmerians, who were considered personifications of souls.
The village emerged from the bowels of Lake Acherousia, which was the entrance to the society of souls. Therefore, the characterization of Ammoudia as a village of "Kato Kosmos" can be considered fair.
Remarkable is the legend of the existence of two elements of Bubi in the swamp of Splantza and Boudi in the swamp of Bounta, which were considered night watchmen of the gates of Hades and close associates of Cerberus.
Ammoudia is an important tourist resort mainly due to its long tradition and significant environmental value. Both the information coming from the monuments, as well as the rare species of flora and fauna that exist in the area, are an important source of knowledge and research.
The day trips to Preveza, Parga, Paxos, Igoumenitsa, Corfu and Ioannina give the visitor the opportunity for an interesting stay.
The wider area of Ammoudia and in general the Acheron Delta, belongs to the European Network of Protected Areas NATURA 2000 (code GR2140001), with a total area of 4935 hectares. The Acheron estuary is a reference point for the wetlands of Western Greece as on its shores are found many rare species of flora and fauna which are protected by international conventions.
