Great instructions! I love my machine and seeing more and more things I can do with it adds to my enjoyment.
This is about the most complete video I have seen on the Glimmer Foil machine. It is very informative to know exactly what your machine can do. Thanks for sharing this today and for all the added information on the glimmer machine .
We're so glad you found it helpful! :)
Thank you. Love the blue ring.
Just pulled my foiling machine out. You gave me confidence to do this. 💜
Excellent tutorial! You answered my question about using water thin dies too. Thankyou😙
That is a great video! I just ordered my machine and some dies - can’t wait to get it now!
That was a great video !!! I had no idea what a Glimmer Hot Foil System was and now I have to have one!!! I am just coming back to card making after 10 years and I was really happy to see that SpellBinders has grown and has so much to offer!!! I did away with all of my supplies when I moved many moons ago so I will have to start from scratch!!! But I'm looking forward to using this machine and technique!!! Thank you so much!
I am doing the exact same thing. Never heard of this until today. Cannot wait to get back to cardmaking!
Wow! So interesting and thank you so much for the excellent tutorial which showed us so many different things! 😊❤️
Thank you! Can’t wait to use all you have taught me!
Brilliantly demonstrated, thank you.
Thanks for watching! (:
Very informative. Thank you!!
Wonderful video.
That's beautiful
Great to review this! so many helpful tips
Wow, you can do so many things with this machine.
I have been lusting over the "Go-Press & Foil" system from when I first saw it, but I think I like yours better.
I have the press and foil I love it buuuuttttt???? I'm leaning towards this also.
Phenomenal video!!! I just ordered one. Woman, just take my money!!! LMMFAO 💰💰💰👑❤❤❤
That is very cool Thanks for the video!!
Spellbinders has Art Deco embossing plates that work well with the foil machine.
I will get this machine, I love it
Wonderful video. I just ordered the Black Friday Bundle. 8 can’t wait to start playing. Thank you for the wonderful instruction on how to use this. I’m looking forward to playing with the Better press too. 😊.
Thanks! Very inspirational
great video - thinking about buying this machine
If you use rayon velvet you can get a really cool look too!
Love your tutorial was very helpful to me please have more
Thanks Earline! We are so glad to hear it was a helpful video. We appreciate your feedback! (:
Dear Santa..The GLIMMER Hot Foil system is on the TOP of my list :)
Anybody still have the original metal embossing plates that Spellbinders invented? I do! I bet these would run through the glimmer machine and leave a gorgeous impressed image! To me, Spellbinders has always been on the cutting edge of design! I still have my raspberry colored Grand Caliber because it is the only die cutting machine that will do large dies! I plan on getting their newer fold up die cutting and embossing machine, as I think I like it better than my Sizzix which takes up too much room on my table. Way to go Spellbinders!
I think I just might have to treat myself to this!
You go girl! :D
Can you do a tutorial with the Paul
Antonio booklet binding set please?
Hi. Great video! Can you use the small Spellbinders machine with the Spellbinders hot foil machine? Thank you.
Wow looks so easy. Does it ever over foil or under foil?
Can you use with the Anna griffin electric die cut machine
Can you foil on vellum? If so, how many shims and specific vellum types? How dies this work with my Big Shot Expess?
wow, this is great I have to purchase this... but I have a question...can you use your regular dies with this ?or is it special dies? sorry I am new and want to be sure!
What do you do if your foiling is not complete when you remove the foil from the project? Can you refoil it somehow? What would you do?
When you have a watercolor paper with color ink, how do you have it foil in the correct place as you will have covered up your paper?
Can Heat Transfer Vinyl be used as well on these machines, or just Hot Foil? Thanks so much
Can you do this on glossy cardboard?
Hi there can you use sizzix die cutting machine with the foiling machine or do you need to buy the spellbinders machine
Hi can we use any die with this machine
Outstanding demonstration. I'm purchasing the system right now. Where is the best place to purchase plates and foil?
Hi Donna! At Scrapbook.com of course! Shop for all your Glimmer Foil supplies right here:
www.scrapbook.com/store/products/?w=glimmer+foil
I’m going to get glimmer machine can you tell me if the new spellbinder die cutting machine roll better because my hand hurts I’m a great grandma thank you so much for your help 😇😇😇
Disculpe es adaptable para cualquier tipo de troquel
Could you do Leather with this machine..👏🤗❤️
Can I use any metal dies?
I'm in love already and I just came across this product as a new Crafter but my main concern is if this product is comparable with the sizzix machines because I had no intentions on purchasing any new die cutting machines at all?!❤
Yes you can use with Big Shot.
@@H2OGirl2011 Thank You
@@H2OGirl2011 you're making me very happy because I want to buy this machine and I do own the Big Shot.
Do you need separate plates for the foiling system or can you use your die cuts for it too?
Watch again if you haven't already yes aware you wrote this question a year ago. But relative today too. But she demonstrates the use of a thinlit or THIN die cut plate to make that soft framed card. Go back again and see her do that. So the answer of course YES you can use SOME DIE plates of course. BUT maybe not all. Steel Rule dies wouldn't likely work well. And I am not sure about some of the embossing and die cutting dies yet even the thin ones. So I myself need to play around too with this. I for one want to foil onto vinyl and faux leathers. When ever I've asked about doing that I get mixed feed back. Some say sure you can others say never and then there are plenty in between. I'm just going to have to experiment. But that's part of the fun and challenge of playing with this STUFF or adult toy's if you will. Take care, stay safe, and spread some whimsy and joy in the world.
Can I use this with my 6 inch big shot?
What is the plate with the verse called? Is it available to purchase?
What weight was your cardstock you used for your 2nd shim? I just got a Glimmer and I can’t wait to get into it today. Thanks for the video! 😁
How can you tell where your car stock is when you can’t see it?
@@maryannshort4422 Hi there! I think you meant to ask the originator of the video but I see they don't reply anyway. I have a question here as well and have had no response. My thought for you tho is to watch Spellbinder's Bootcamp. It's really amazing, short videos and a lot of well packed info. I hope this helps!! 😀
Can you use other foils on this machine?
Yes as long as it is heat activated foil for that purpose. I mix and match all of them across brands. This includes foil made for laminator methods. i have mostly gemini foils because I'm always finding them on sale and they often come in sets of three selections too. But you don't want to get this foil mixed up with Heat Transfer Vinyl or permanent adhesive vinyls. Both of those vinyls are thicker and they have a super adhesive backing that usually the design is CUT OUT and applied by heat pressing for the HVT or just firmly pressed in place for the permanent adhesive type and is cold applied not heated at all. The HVT is great for Knit T's and sweat shirts etc. The other is great for mugs and hard surfaces however I've seen both used and with pretty decent results. It's called taking a chance and experimenting. Do it with some caution and paying attention or focused on what you are doing and what products you are using and why they may or may not work out to avoid damage of machines or materials. Stay safe and spread some fun.
Please Santa I need this machine xxxx
I really want to try this, however, I have what may seem an odd question. I only have use of one hand/arm, so I can't unhook the machine and hold it -- as she demonstrated. My one good hand is my dominant hand, and I have fairly fingers. Could you see if someone on your staff could try to attempt it with one hand? I would be grateful!
Hi Sandy,
Not sure if I'm late answering your question, but if you could put a little tape on your cardstock and then your shim and plate to keep it down that may help you. I use masking tape at the end of my cardstock to hold it down because mine will usually shift. Hope this helps.
Can embossing folders be used with the Glimmer as they can with the GoPress?
Do I also need the Spellbinder platinum machine to use this machine?
No it works with a lot of machines as long as the opening is large enough width and height too. Some of the stand alone less known brands do not have a large enough height to run this size base plate the heated up platform through their openings. I have one of those but I also own a sizzix express and a spellbinder platinum 8.5. Also a gemini but I dislike my gemini it's ruined a number of my expensive 3-D Tim Holtz die and emboss plates two on their first run through. So anyway you will need a embossing machine to work well with this machine to apply enough pressure to it to achieve a solid good take of the foiling.
Thank you. Can you use any metal die?
Hi Beth! You can use MANY metal wafer thin dies (0.8mm thick) with the Glimmer Hot Foil System.
Some things to note: Some dies do not translate well to foiling and you will need to experiment. Also, when using dies, you will need to add an extra cardstock shim or two because the dies are slightly thinner than the Glimmer plates.
Not steel rule dies for sure. But the thin dies for sure. Thinlits come to mind.
Can this be used with rubber stamps and HS’s toner ink?
Probably NOT. The rubber stamp and toner inks is an entirely different approach to foiling. You can often use the same foilling sheets for both but this is for HEAT and PRESSURE combined method. If you laminate you use toner ink by laser or copy machines that use toner and then apply the foil sheet and run through a laminator to heat it and apply pressure but your laminator is not going to accept the sandwich you make here to run through the embossing/die cut machine. Ok both those methods use heat and apply pressure. So since you know how to apply toner ink to a rubber stamp and place the foil over that and run it through a laminator the kind with heat not cold lamination the laminator heat and rollers are applying the pressure. You can sometimes get results to foil via an iron too but it's tricky and you do not move the iron around just press hold and release and move to another spot overlapping and again press and hold and release etc. There is also products that are a tacky glue substance that allows you to apply to rubber stamps and then stick the foil sheets over the printed design via the rubber stamp onto paper and it kinda works but not my favorite for sure. The difference is the laminator and stamp/toner method does not leave an impression in the cardstock but you can get some embossing if you use an embossing machine and follow these directions on this video. Some methods work better than others as she demonstrated.
I bought this machine awhile ago and finally decided to try it, it works great except I keep getting the foil on the paper away from the die. I have tried to cut down the foil, closer to the size of the die and also cut the corners, what am I doing wrong? I really don't want to have to cut down the paper always to just around the design, but use it on front of a A2 card.
Hi Marion! You may be applying too much pressure or using too thick a shim, which is pressing the foil onto your paper where you don't want it. Try using a thinner shim and see if this helps. For more information about the Spellbinders Glimmer Hot Foil system, see this article, which has a whole section on that machine!
www.scrapbook.com/articles/crafting-with-foil
Hope this helps and thanks for watching!
Marion King I saw Jennifer McGuire demonstrate this machine and she used an erasure to remove the foil that transferred out of the design. Hope this helps!
can you use any dies?
You can use most metal wafer thin dies in it but they may all not create beautiful designs. Some look beautiful but some don’t make sense because they were designed to cut out shapes. When using dies, you will need to add an extra cardstock shim or two because the dies are slightly thinner than the Glimmer plates.
Hope somebody at Sizzix sees this. HOW does one line up a card front if you place the cardstock on top of the die, which you then cannot see? I have a difficult time trying to line things up, upside down. The grid helps some, but not a lot. Is there a trick that I'm missing?
It's helpful to use cardstock that is a bit bigger than your finished product so you can trim it down if necessary. Hope this helps!
Do you have to use special dies?
Hi Angie! (: You can use most metal wafer thin dies in this machine, but they may not all create beautiful designs. Scrapbook.com awesome! Thanks so much :)
Does it work with any die? Thanks
No not any. Not steel rule dies. But VERY THIN dies like thinlits and wafer thin dies. But not as well as the dies sold just for heat foiling for sure.
Can this be used in another company?s embossing and die cutting machine like Stampinup. I was given this spellbinders foil machine as a birthday gift
I don't know what a stampinup machine looks like. But if it uses a large thicker base plate maybe it will work fine. You need to have a high enough opening to accept a sandwhich of sorts not just wide enough too. Otherwise I use the hot plate on a sizzix and a spellbinder both.
Can this be used with Spellbinders Grand Calibur? Thank you.
According to the manufacturer, it cannot be used with the Grand Calibur machine.
That's a bummer. I was looking at both the Gemini and the Spellbinders machines, I would have to buy the gemini die cut to use theirs. I own the Grand Calibur and thought I would be able to use it. At this point I don't want to have to buy a new die cut machine to use the Glimmer Hot Foil, that would be two new machines...to costly.
@@dmurfval702 Oh watch some of the multiple tips on how to foil where they demonstrate a variety of methods. Some use the laminator method so if you had one you could do that. If you don't there are other possiblities including a tacky glue product that you can apply to stamps like inking and then stamp the paper stock and lay the foil sheets onto that and work or burnish it onto the glued stamp areas. Anyway better to watch the videos to get a feel for the various methods and how great they are.
@@lasinmt106 Thanks. I ended up buying the Glimmer and the Platinum 6. Love it!
Can you foil on metallic cardstock?
Yes usually you can. But you want to use good contrast materials. In otherwords dark blue or black cardstock would look lovely with silver foil. And shimmery whites and pastels might look really nice with gold foil. And of course they make different multi designs and colors in the foils so rainbows are wonderful to use on darks and light cardstock and that includes metalic. However some silver metallic cardstock and silver foil might be lost in transition so to speak. I make mini note books so I like to personalize and own all the zodiac star layouts for all 12 that come in foil plates and choose the darker metallic cardstocks to cut out as covers then foil the stars onto that. So I just ordered 100 pages of dark blue metallic cardstock from amazon to work with just with these dies primarily to foil designs onto. Hope this gives you some ideas and to think outside the box.
Can you make personalized satin ribbons with this
They sell alphabet foil dies so sure you could. I am assuming you mean by names of a person or their initials etc.
Is the foiling on fabric washable?
Some brands do say you can wash on gentle and by hand but not to machine wash or run through a drier. I have yet to try to wash any but do use on fabrics from time to time.
What kind of ribbon can be used? Does it have to be a cotton?
They tested it on lots of ribbon. The one in the video was more of a satin finish. Thanks for watching!
I think polyesters usually would work fine but some nylons might melt. So you would need to do some trials to make sure it's compatible.
Will this system work with my older Cuttlebug machine?
Hi Patti, I read on the Spellbinders website that it is not compatible with the Cuttlebug.
I think the cuttlebug's mouth opening is too small as in not high enough opening to accept the heated plate as a base plate. The cuttlebug from photos I've seen all look too short but wide enough if your dies fit but not high enough.
I know there are probably tons of videos that compare this glimmer machine to the gemini one, but anyone want to give me their honest opinion on which one they would prefer for an experienced print maker? I really want to invest in one, but cannot decide between the two. thank you to anyone who replies in advance! xoxo
I have this machine because it was a whole lot less expensive on Office Supply when I purchased it. By the way Google it first because depending on if I selected it on their site it came up higher than an offer from them via google search. I know who knows? Anyway if you are an experienced print maker I believe you would do well with either. Having said that I have not used the gemini version. I have a sizzix Express electric die cutting machine and also the Spellbinders Platinum 8.5 manual. Pretty much many items these days across the bigger name brands work well with one another as long as you stay focused and pay attention and use the right shims and plates and sandwich properly for each of it's quirks and suggestions. I have a lovely LARGE rubber stamp with the song...Oh Xmas Tree..only it's in German and my husbands family grew up in a traditional German Xmas tree ritual of kids did not see a tree until Xmas eve. Then before the french doors opened to see the tree the family gathered together and doors opened and they all sang the song. So anyway I want to figure out how to emboss it as will as foil it. Now it's a mounted stamp on wood base. I may attempt to remove it from the base. It would be too thick to fit through any of my machines. But due to it's size I have never gotten a perfect print or worse trying to get an embossed print via embossing inks and powders. It will smear or skip or worse leave little bits of embossing powder that ruins the print too. Anyway would love to find this song done in script like the one she demonstrates here as in You are a Child....it's about that size. And I would love to find a few more. I do have an alphabet set for foiling but it's not enough characters to print an entire page like I'd need too. Or I would have to buy dozens of alphabets in same size etc. to have enough letters to do it and sure enough they would shift even if laid out on a magnet sheet first. Ok enough of that...since you have a lot of experience with print making again either machine. But do read reviews on Amazon and watch more videos here on UA-cam and then search for best prices. They like to sell the Gemini foiler in bundles so the price can jump around quite a bit. Both machines are quite similar in their approach to how they work. You heat up the design plate usually metal and then it helps to warm up the cut to fit foil after it's placed onto the die and then continue to heat for a few more seconds the shims and sandwich plates. I have the full Zodiac set of foiling plates for all 12 along with the die cutting designs and stamps too though several different brands they all mix well together giving lots of options. This is why I want to foil on faux leather and vinyls because I make mini personalized note pads and use the faux leathers as covers. I usually just cut out figures and names but would like to go up a notch and add the zodiac star designs and embellishments via hot foiling too. Some vinyls will melt however so it's a little tricky.
Can this work with the Cuttlebug?
Hi there! No, unfortunately, it is not compatible with the Cuttlebug.
Can you use it in other brands of die cutting machines? And can you use any brand of heat transfer foil?
You can use with Spellbinders Platinum, Platinum 6, Deep Sea Die Cutting and Embossing Machine, Sizzix BigShot, Sizzix BigKick, Sizzix Big Shot Plus, Sizzix Big Shot Express, Tim Holtz Vagabond, We R Memory Keepers Evolution, RG Amaze
No. We know that the Spellbinders and Go Press and Foil brand foils will work. The Minc and Thermoweb foils are a toner based system and do not work. Great questions. Thanks for watching.
does this fit the cuttlebug?
Glimmer is not compatible with Cuttlebug or any other machines that can’t cut Steel Rule Dies and do not have at least a 6” wide platform.
@@scrapbook Hi, I have a Cuttlebug machine and it does cut with steel rule dies and its platform is 6". So does it mean then that the Glimmer can be used with the Cuttlebug..I would adore one.
Hi Bessie! We might suggest contacting the manufacturer to check if your machine will be compatible with the Glimmer Hot Foil System. Please see their contact information here: www.spellbinderspaperarts.com/contact-us
Where can I find the script plate
Hi Jackie! It appears that she is using this script plate www.scrapbook.com/store/spe-glp-216.html 🥰
Can you use it with Gemini Die machines?
Unfortunately, no. The Glimmer Hot Foil System is not compatible with the Cuttlebug, Side Kick, or any other machine that cannot cut Steel Rule Dies and does not have at least a 6" long platform.
Does this system work with Gemini Jr?
Unfortunately, the Glimmer Hot Foil System is not compatible with the Cuttlebug, Side Kick, or any other machine (including the Gemini machines) that cannot cut Steel Rule Dies and does not have at least a 6" long platform. It can be used in the Platinum 6, Big Shot, We R Evolution, Vagabond and other machines that have this capacity.
@@scrapbook Thanks, Fortunately I have a Big Shot plus, but hardly use it since buying the Gemini.

How hot does the machine get? Actual temperature?
Hi Theresa! According to Spellbinders, the Glimmer Hot Foil System temperature could reach as high as 250 degrees Fahrenheit (121 degrees Celsius) so it's important to be very careful when working with this machine. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!
@@scrapbook Thank you!!
Hot enough I do not recommend allowing smaller children to use unattended. And maybe not older kids who aren't mature enough yet to stay focused and not leave it plugged in and or go off to do other things. Yes it has a safety time off if not used button but some teens not all thankgoodness can get distracted and lay say paper onto of this and oops could happen. Anyway they provide a magnetic tweezer to help you prevent burnt fingers and yes hot enough to burn a finger so be careful.
Hi what was that all in one tool you were using at 3:36? Thank you
Shim and spacer would be the same thing, really. You’re just adding thickness. If you’re into it, you can use digital callipers. They’re cheap and easy to use.
why can't you run the plate all the way through
Hello! You are able to run your plate all the way through the machine. However, if you have already gone over the part that needed transferring, you could just roll it back through the way it went in. It all just depends on your preference and how you would like to do it (: Here is a video that shows the plate going all the way through: ua-cam.com/video/nMW1jmBBGtM/v-deo.html
thanks. it's interesting that the presenter made a big deal about NOT running it all the way through and did it that way both times.
I felt she was just saying she didn't need to run it all the way passing as long as she hit the plate both directions fully. It's more her style is all and I took it that way. Of course if you feel the need to go all the way both directions or multple times more than the two once through the machine and then backed again making it two passes sure you can. Maybe she feels it just takes too much extra time during a demonstration that's limited in time. And she may have just wanted the viewers to know she had fully hit the design well so she mentioned it as much as anything else so you would't question if she had actually done it live before your eyes when you didn't see her pass the complete plates all the way through both ways.
@@racena2034 she didn’t make a big deal about not running it through all the way; she was simply saying that you don’t have to. She stated several times that you run it completely over the plate until you feel that it has passed over it. It’s exactly like die cutting, where you don’t have to run it all the way through but only until you pass over the entire die.
Very cool, but “go ahead and…” repeated constantly drove me nuts. 😁
Tutorial informative. Speaker needs to check how many times she says “ I’m going to go ahead and....”
For me distracting. Otherwise, super information. Thank you.
Thanks for watching!
