I had a very similar experience using an old can of shaving cream like this several years ago, at my parents house. My regular gel had run out and my dad pulled what had to be a 20-ish year old can from the back of the closet. It worked fine, but had that same deeply unpleasant oily/rubbery smell. My guess is that whatever compounds are used to give the cream its scent break down over time, and this is the result.
Hey Sinatra, great video. Thank you so much for the shout out. Shaving with 1970s Barbasol! You are a braver man than I. Have a great day, and a wonderful weekend.
Watching that, if I had a swear box handy, I could buy a Rex Ambassador based on what my wife had to say about using that can of Castrol GTX. Well done you though for persevering AND it was a tad more relaxing to watch than the last one.
I've been getting back in the habit of using my Black Beauty in the past few days, it's a longer handled version (Super-109) from the first quarter of 1972. I was originally looking for third quarter 1976 when I was born, but I found a good deal on this one so I jumped on it. Also I love the "What am I, a _____?" ongoing theme, it reminds me of "I'm a doctor, not a _____" from the original Star Trek. As for blade choice, don't worry what we think, just keep using what you like. If your face can handle a Feather 7 days a week (not sure if mine can) then keep using Feathers. Finally as for 70's style, it brings back comforting memories for me, the green and yellow refrigerators, the shag carpets, and the mustaches. To this day, the 70's mustache look is how I still think a proper baseball player should look, like Rollie Fingers and Pete Vuckovich.
Products like 1970's Barbasol is why I grew a beard in the 1970's. You are a brave man and appreciate what you are doing for our entertainment. Dorco blades are excellent. My go to now.
Always love how you so carefully prepare for these vids🥴 My Barbasol from 1974 is LONG gone. I'm not sure what you expected here. My wife bought a few cans about 5 years ago for a craft and when I tried to use it in a pinch, it was watery and no good. Maybe because she used some and it wasn't stored in a desk for decades.
The can from the 1970's and '80's like yours was at least 11 oz. The can I bought around 2016 or 2017 was 10 oz. and cost about $1.25 on sale. I just checked the sale price for a new can - it's $2.50 and the size is down to 7 ounces! The only reason I still use it is for shaving my back and shoulders with an Atra Plus cartridge or a generic version. With that kind of shrinkflation I just might use a cheap cream or soap and brush instead for the back.
I have 4 sensitive skin and 12 gelS from Barbasol that I bought in 2001 at a dollar store. My first can of Barbasol was in 1984, these can lasted a long time. Since 2015, I shave myself, sometime the shaving cream or the shaving soap.
Hey Neutron💈💈 Took one on the chin for the viewers, thanks. Probably VOC's off gassing in the can and degradation of the liner if present, or, just basic chemical breakdown due to age. I wouldn't have used after the first pass, hope no skin issues appear. That Super Adjustable 84 is a keeper, I have several 84's and 109's. Great shavers. Enjoy!
You’re a brave man, I would not use something that old on my face, I’m sure it’s fine and I thank you for doing this for us. If you have a lot of blades that are not what you like I’d suggest to just use them once and then toss them I think they would not be so sharp for a second shave. There's nothing better then Feather blades the only one that could be close that I’ve tried are BIC in the yellow pkg but I could be wrong. JMO. Good luck have fun and enjoy the Hobby.
Maybe you’re getting like a rust smell??? At 15:53 there is a very dark brown droplet coming from under the nozzle. Maybe that was mixing with the foam.
Yeah, that stuff i would not use. 😂 Nice shave, i think the black beauty is the ones with black plastic base plate, the others super adjustable. Or so i heard. Take care
There are many classic after shave splashes from the 50's and onward that still exist today. Brut, Aqua velva, Skin Bracer (one of my favorites and has a nice menthol kick), Nivea might have been around back then. Great and entertaining video, sorry you had to endure the stench of that raunchy barbasol though. Have you tried any soaps from sphinxbeard.com? I'd suggest you look into it. They make great quality soaps and are partnered with Peter Charkalis of A&E who I think makes their soap base.
@@SinatraLennon Lol, I'm guessing the desk where he found this can was not inside the house, but maybe out in a barn or a shed, exposed to 40 years of hot summers and cold winters.
Ha ha ha! Motor oil? Dang, that must have smelled pretty bad. Do you know what Barbasol foam originally smelled like back then? I smelled my 2000s Barbasol can and the newer stuff and it smelled the same. I might start using the 2000s can because why not?
Make sure, shave fans, and look up "just lance" to see him shave with a safety razor under visual impairment, he could tour it. Thanks Bobby Barbarosl and Lance.
And about the 70s fashion, the giant pointy collars etc, i thought we were doing ok the last 20 years, not too bad, but we have been taken for a ride yet again. They got us where we least think about, the gut line .We just came through a period of very, very low cut/rise trousers to the point its ridiculous and most trousers available for normal men are now cut about as low as a belly dancing herbal aerobic instructors immodest gympants. Its appalling, the result is thousands of middle age managers walking around with huge guts that hang, and will always hang no matter how much they pull up their trousers as they are cutt too low, but near 4 inches. Once your eye sees this detail the last 20 years look as bad as the 70s, and its not improved yet !.
Happy Friday SL! I just want to say hi to my best buddy in Munich Germany, Florian!! You’re a great friend and I love how we have this shaving hobby. 👍💯
Metal, motor oil, sticky, not slick at all and stinks... great shave😖 That's entertainment 🎶 The fatboy gets all the love, but from what I know it wasn't a big seller and wasn't around for more than 4 years or so. The slim adjustable and the similar black beauty were around for a long time. Sure wish Gillette would reintroduce them. Have a great weekend!
Then it wouldn’t be entertaining dude. I don’t come here to watch SinatraLennon shave,I come here to hear his conversations and hear his opinion on certain shaving stuff. He’s the Bob Ross Of Shaving, not the Annoyingly Quiet Monotone Man.

“you couldn’t have purchased me baby...no price.” I’m still laughing
I should study for my exams at the University, but here I am, finding out how bad the Vintage Barbasol smells :D
Same😭
Good ol Barbasol!
I can see the advertisement now
"New Barbasol! Now with Castrol Motor oil scent!"
Great shave Mr. Sinatra! 🪒

I got my dad a Black Beauty for Father's day in 2013. He went back to using a Mach 3, so I liberated the Black Beauty from him.
I'm afraid the germs form the 70s are wearing bell bottom pants and turtlenecks and come in groovy waves.
Instead of going out for a jog like I promised, I am watching a video of how bad the barbasol smelled. Great video Mr. Lennon!

That metallic smell is probably the steel can odor that leeched into the foam. Fun shave. Have a good weekend.
That 1970 Black Beauty looks beautiful! Great video Sinatra!
I just had a shave with my recent purchase of the 1970’s barbasol can. And your right Sinatra Lennon this can of barbasol smells like motor oil.
Have you ever used clubman after shave? Please use some one time and tell us what you think. That's my video request for you @SinatraLennon
If your going to continue to put yourself through this ,at least have the number of a good dermatologist on speed dial.

They made the Black Beauty’s and Super Adjustable’s into the 80’s. I’m trying to find a B (1981) my birth year. I have a 1978 and I love it.
Nice, I hope to get a 1976 some day but I'm happy with my 72 for now.
Hey Mr.Sinatra I was born in "P1" !!!!!!
I just ate a can of vintage '70s Bon Vivant vichyssoise soup. Tasted a little funny🙂
Have you ever used Old Spice after shave?
The 70's? I graduated high school in the 70s! Great shave, and I want a Black Beauty...
You should do a series were you do a shave themed after each decade
I just received my vintage barbasol can today. Mine didn’t smell like motor oil. My almost smelled like the modern barbasol.
Watching you after a long time...Man i get best vibes from you.
Great shave as always, Love Barbasol!!!
Maybe you’re getting like a rust smell??? At 15:53 there is a very dark brown droplet coming from under the nozzle. Maybe that was mixing with the foam.
Yeah, that stuff i would not use. 😂
Nice shave, i think the black beauty is the ones with black plastic base plate, the others super adjustable. Or so i heard. Take care
They changed to plastic base plates in late 1976 I believe. I looked it up because I hope to buy one from my birth year some day.
Turn off that hdr Sinatra... exposure seems balncing off.. dosent seem right...overall your content is the best

Skinbracer 👍
@@kristopher6031 If you like skin Bracer, check out shave chaser by PAA. The ck6 soap is good, but the splash is almost identical to Skin Bracer.
'It's not slick at all and it stinks' damn sorry to hear that 😂
You should have put the 2974 Barbasol container up for bid on ebay!
Sinatra you are very entertaining!!!
Feathers were $14 before midnight today 30" later 16$ amazon.....I got them at 16+. If you need......they were 30 in NOv
Feathers are getting pricy, I’ll only use feathers why must they do this to me
So that old can of shaving cream is not a fougere ?
More like a Phoo-Wee!

I may have been looking at that same one on Ebay. What did you pay for that? The art is so much better on that retro can
I think it was $30.
@@SinatraLennon cool!
Smells like motor oil and metal? Now THAT'S a manly scent!

Hello buddy great video i hope you have a great day today and weekend to
You just proved that a slick, good smelling soap isn't needed to shave. At least Osage Rub took care of the after smell.
Upc wasn't in use until 76
This video just made me laugh. Hahaha, thanks for the great shave video and keep them coming! I love the old product videos.
The can has bar code on it . Was bar code scanning done in the 70's . I don't remember 🤔🤔
Around 1974 or so.
4:26 at least, they got the real original scent of Barbasol shaving 🪒 cream.
I was born in 1975. 49 years old as of today (AUG. 26, 2024).
Hahahaha I'm just crying watching this awe, awe... hahahaha smelling test...oh oh ohaweawe....you're the best entertainment shaving show ever ‼️
Legendary Barbasol👍🏻💈💪🏻
Speaking of fashion in the 70s, check out Paul Rudd in "Anchorman". He's a perfect representation
wonder how this barbasol can compares to the smell of that cologne he wears
@@DerekJS82 it smells like straight gasoline
I saw an unopened bottle of Coke back from 1924 in an antique shop. How about drinking that while having another go?
Could it be any worse than what No-Cal soda or Tab soda tasted like? No-Cal in the 1960's tasted like cough syrup!
I'm surprised it didn't bust the beard without needing to shave.

I know it doesn’t smell like the Barbasol can because it was literally from 1974 it’s probably rusty and no wonder why the cans looking so old
Dude!!!! Seriously, about 15:54-ish....there is unknown brown stuff coming out of that can!!! 🤢🤢🤢
Awesome video I asked Gillette to do that and they told me they won't be doing that anymore I don't know I forget what they told me
Don't blame it on the boogie, blame it on the Barbasol!
I have a super 84 too . I had a long handle black beauty but I sold it to get the short handle

Sinatra Lennon... Yes.
CDC... Why?
Sinatra Lennon... I was bored.
Well yeah, I mean you wouldnt want to eat a pack of jello from 1974 either.

I saw that! I do love it.
hey to me you could use the same products every time the videos are funny, stay safe, cheers.....Peter
Can I buy the Barbasol Can from you so you don’t have to smell that awful smell?😂😂
This was basically my first experience with a boar hair brush 😂 really stinky
