H/H match update: ... We're now up to week 134 of 291 for our favorite classic game show. These episodes were taped on February 8, 1976 and first aired in mid-March of 1976. Our three stalwart regulars are all in their places with bright, shiny faces. This week Betty White is our returning semi-regular, ready no doubt to roll up Gene's pant leg once again, and possibly do some H/H matching with a smart and lucky contestant. She had quite a time her last visit five weeks ago, scoring back-to-back H/H matches in 643 and 644, and quite likely in the missing episode 645 as well. Lee Meriwether is here for her fourth week (of 12 total) on the match game panel. She's certainly no stranger, having first appeared rather early on (in 1973, episodes 116-120), and her most recent visit was episodes 631-635. She's also no stranger to the H/H match, having been chosen once, but sadly not matching. And George Kennedy makes his Match Game '7x debut this week. His "career" as a panelist will span only 5 weeks, concluding with episodes 1166-1170. But looking back at MG history, that's plenty of time to score a H/H match! Commentary: After three full weeks of only Richard playing the head-to-head match (18 consecutive times), his streak was broken when a new champion chose Brett three times in a row, matching all three time! I wouldn't shed a tear for Richard, though: he's played the H/H match 383 times so far (excluding any possible action today). The number two celeb? Brett has played 55 times. Charles comes in third with 44 attempts. In other words, Richard has been chosen about four times as much as Brett and Charles combined! "Oh, but he gets chosen the most because he's the best at matching!" - At least that's what numerous comments state. Well, it may feel that way to some, but the actual numbers tell a different story. You can scroll down to the leader board for the full list of stats, but with Charles you have a 47.7% chance of matching (based on past performance). Brett gives you a 41.8% chance. Richard? He's currently at 41.0%. In other words, looking at the actual results of all past H/H matches, it's hard (well, impossible) to make the case that Richard is a lot (or any) better at the H/H match than his colleagues. Then, looking at the semi-regulars, we have Betty with a 50% match rate so far, and Fannie at 52.6%. Plus, there are four other celebs with even better track records (although based on much more limited data). But of course, none of the contestants would have the actual H/H data -- they would have had to watch every day for nearly three years now and keep a log, and that's not realistic -- so they're choosing a celeb based on other criteria. I think one of those criteria is simply "herd mentality" -- if everyone else picks Richard, he must be the best, so I'll pick him too... And, obviously, Richard really is pretty good at the H/H match, so contestants often win (about 40-41% of the time so far), and that's apparently enough to keep the myth alive that he's the best... Today's action: Brett's "Bird Doo Doo" wins our champion his fourth game! Today's audience match question: " ________ Gas " -- My first thought was out of gas... The celebs: George (High-test), Richard (Out of), and Brett (Regular) The choice: Out of The answers: Laughing, Out of, Natural Well, our champ gets to play for another $2,500. He has chosen and matched Brett three times in a row. Does he stick with her, or take a shot with someone else? Wow. He chooses Richard this time, explaining that it was his sister who gave him that advice. Richard seems a little... odd about it. Well, Brett has matched her last four times in a row, so hoping for five consecutive wins may be pushing it. On the other hand, of Richard's five most recent attempts, he only matched twice, so he may be more due for a win, statistically speaking. Well, for the sake of family harmony, fingers crossed for our champion and Richard... Today's H/H question: "Cat's _______ " I immediately thought of "meow" as in the old phrase "the cat's meow." I think I'll stick with it, although cat's eye (gemstones and also marbles) is also tempting, as is cat's paw. Oh, and I guess there's cat's pajamas too... Richard begins writing almost immediately (throwing in a quick glance to seat #6 as he usually does), but doesn't seem thrilled with his answer. He scratches his head, discards that answer and writes a new one. The contestant answers "Meow." (Wow! Well, the contestant tends to match Brett, and I tend to match Brett, so it's not surprising that we match each other!) But the question is, does he match Richard for $2,500? Richard wrote "Whiskers"!??? Is that an expression that anyone says? Was he even trying? No match today. Commentary: Brett demonstrated class in declining to state what her answer would have been. By contrast, there were two or three semi-recent H/H matches when Richard wasn't chosen, and after the other celeb fails to match the contestant, he holds up a card with the "winning" answer, intimating "You should have picked me." It struck me as mean and petty. And totally unnecessary, given that Richard is already chosen roughly 80% of the time... Here's the updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy: Orson Bean - 100% (4 wins in 4 attempts). Gary Burghoff - 83.3% (5 wins in 6 attempts). TIE: Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). Fannie - 52.6% (10 wins in 19 attempts). Betty - 50% (17 wins in 34 attempts). Charles - 47.7% (21 wins in 44 attempts). Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 wins in 18 attempts). Brett - 41.8% (23 wins in 55 attempts). Richard - 40.9% (157 wins in 384 attempts). Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts). *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 666, excluding the lost/missing/damaged episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325, and 645. (As per MatchGameProductions, these episodes "are nowhere to be found and also aren't in the Goodson/Todman Library. Sadly, looks like they are lost forever!")
Thank you for posting this, I love George Kennedy. He seems a little self-conscious, doesn't he? Bless his soul. He can't seem to keep his hand off his face.
No one said "Classical Gas," a 1968 hit instrumental for Mason Williams, head writer for "The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour," which taped in the same studio at CBS.
Best thing about this show - there's always a good lookin woman popping up lol Lee look's great and even betty is cute in her own way. Love these FUNNY 70's women. I never knew who Fannie Flag was but she's prob my fav guest regular lol
I went to see it at my favorite theatre when it was new, in sensurround the newest technology back in the day, however I didn't know who Victoria was, so I'm guessing she was the girl trying to get away from that national guardsman
And depending on when this show was taped, the Howard Hughes question should have been "I got a short-term job...." since Hughes would pass away in April of 1976...
"You unlock this door with the key of imagination. Beyond it is another dimension - a dimension of sound, a dimension of sight, a dimension of mind. You're moving into a land of both shadow and substance, of things and ideas. You've just crossed over into the Twilight Zone! or episode 666 of Match Game 76" ;0)
I'm surprised no one, not even Gene or any of the celebrity panelists, mentioned this is the 666th episode, the number of Antichrist's mark. That would explain why things are going weird here, like Gene getting hurt a little when he pushed the button for round 2, Charles on the phone, and Betty saying dog as her answer.

And nobody on that set knew that this was the 666th episode of Match Game. As we all know, 666 is The Number of the Beast, The Mark of Cain, or whatever the heck people call it nowadays.
I like Greg, but I am SOOOOOOOOOO glad he lost. I can't BELIEVE he did that!!! Every other sane human being would have stuck with the person who won with him twice in a row.
