- In this video, I show you how you can install Hyprland side by side to the new Plasma 6 desktop environment. It's easy with the Hyprland Starter Script that you can download from my GitLab Reporitory.
gitlab.com/stephan-raabe/hypr...
The Hyprland Starter package is a great starting point for your personal Hyprland experiments. And you can switch between Hyprland and Plasma 6 and back whenever you want with SDDM, the default display manager for Plasma.
In addition, I will show you how you can install an advanced Hyprland configuration with my ML4W dotfiles in the version 2.8.2.
gitlab.com/stephan-raabe/dotf...
The installation of Plasma 6 is easy with the command:
sudo pacman -S sddm plasma
Additional applications can be installed from the Plasma Software Center.
You can find more information to Plasma 6 on kde.org/

Thank you so much for your feedback.
Been watching your channel for about 6 months, just before you started you dotfiles series. Great work! Think I'm going to bite the bullet and install your system for hyprland and Plasma 6. I prefer to do most of the work myself, but you have done such a good job, I may even install your dotfiles repository. Wishing you continued sucess!
Thank you so much for your feedback.
always good to see updates - staying away from KDE and loving Hyprland, your hard work, sharing, and these dots
Thanks
This come exactly at the time I needed it incredible work thank you chef !
Thank you!
Thanks Stephan, vouve made the process as easy as possible and it is a fantastic project! Cheers man!
Thank you. Have fun with it.
Wow! I am tempted to bring your Hyprland setup to ALG. Great work Stephan.
Thank you.
Flawless work Stephan! This is my new head video of my gallery. Regards from Córdoba, Argentina.
Thank you so much.
Hi Guys! I am Guillermo, an Argentinian in Auckland! Have a great week!
@ Hola Guillermo! Bien ahí, hay que argentinizar el mundo. Abrazo de gol!

my favorite DE and DM sits side by side. Can't wait to try. Much appreciated!
I don't use arch by the way
Ok. Hope you find a solution for your setup.
Excellent video and scripted setup. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching.
Having little to no experience w/ Arch based distros, I enjoyed trying Endeavour in a VM so after some research I started fresh with it as main distro. After trying so many of the WMs, i3, sway, qtile, awesome, etc. I'd been wanting to start experimenting with Hyprland and this video helped me get it installed and working easily! Really great job. Appreciate your work.
Thank you so much for your feedback and trying out the scripts.
Great job, man! Hyprland looks amazing. Greetings!
Thanks.
Thanks mate! Amazing work. I will have fun with this today. Regards from Auckland.
Thank you. Regards back from Germany.
Great video, thank you! I just discover your channel while searching for Qtile content and will watch all your Qtile videos. As an enthusiast Linux user ( but not a programmer), I started a few years ago with Debian Xfce desktop, and later witched first to I3 and then Spectrwm window manager (both easy to configure), I decided now to try to install Qtile... As I'm not a programmer, I'm prepared to learn and face some problems while configuring Qtile, especially as I have a dual monitor setup. Thanks the great work of content creators like you and others, normal users like me are able to learn and progress. Thank you so much!
Thank you very much for your feedback.
i just installed your dot files this morning and was wondering where did i go wrong with sddm themes 😂 thanks for this video, it helped
Great. Will improve the installation process for sddm themes in the future.
@@mylinuxforwork i don't know if this options exists or not, but being able to set the vertical size of the waybar and the opacity from the menus would be a great feature 😇
Very nice thanks chap!
Love ya work
Thanks.
You are absolutely Great
Thanks.
Great work man!
Thank you.
Finally, Plasma 6 is out of Arch testing repo!
Yes. Installation was straightforward.
you are the best !!!
Thanks.
Hi as I can see, you may have followed my advice that I told you last time.I now plan to install it right now.
Every feedback is welcome.
@@mylinuxforwork Thanks but you created it. I hope you don't stop with that.
So this install of Hyprland will run in a VM? Wow, that's great. Looking forward to testing.
Please use Qemu/KVM with virtmanager and enabled 3D acceleration.
@@mylinuxforwork sounds great, thanks.
Thanks!
Thank you.
Nice...👍

This script broke my Plasma 6 installation, to the point I couldn't start a terminal nor any programs at all. Luckily I could login to the Hyprland session and restore a Timeshift backup that saved my computer.
Thanks for your feedback. Sorry to read that you had issues on your system? Just tested today on Manjaro and the week before on many other Arch distros. What's your distro?
Arch Linux, Plasma 6.0.5. After installation, no apps could be launched on Plasma and there was no network nor external monitor support on Hyprland
@@FacundoTroitero Cannot believe that this is due the installation of the package for Hyprland. Never had this before or have been reported. Can you try to update your system, reboot, and start the installer again? And teboot again? And if it’s happening again, please open an issue on Gitlab and we will try to find the issue together.
@@mylinuxforwork It's my computer for work so I'm not trying again soon. But I read about similar issues, apparently due to conflicts between xdg-desktop-portal-kde and xdg-desktop-portal-hyprland? My system had all pacman packages updated and I restarted it after the script installation.
Will this script work with greeters other than sddm ? I use lightdm sleek greeter
sddm is supported by Hyprland. Other greaters could fail. Please check the Hyprland Wiki for more information.
Hey! I loved your dotfile! However I run into an issue where it would go from 120hz down to 60hz how would i fix this?
You can create a custom variation for your monitor setup. Copy a file in /hypr/conf/monitors/ and edit the configuration. Then select your file in the settings script (or app if you’re already on the rolling release) The documentation can be found here: gitlab.com/stephan-raabe/dotfiles/-/blob/dev/hypr/conf/README.md?ref_type=heads and here wiki.hyprland.org/Configuring/Monitors/
Hey, great content. Is the KWallet synced with hyprland?
Not used it so far. Give it a try wiki.archlinux.org/title/KDE_Wallet
Does KDE applications follow QT themes set up in hyprland session?
You have to set some environment variables: github.com/hyprwm/xdg-desktop-portal-hyprland/issues/145
Hey! I Have the same DM + DE setup on my work laptop, however I have stumbled upon notification daemon issue that i have no idea how to resolve. Is there any way to use different notification daemon on KDE and Hyprland?
Not sure. For the dotfiles I'm using dunst.
What if i only have hyprland with your dotfiles and want to try plasma ? What packages should i install and it shouldn break the hyprland right ?
Try sudo pacman -S plasma plasma-meta
@@mylinuxforwork thanks, I was able to fix my broken hyprland from plasma
i installed your dotfiles and it's been fantastic so far, the only thing bothering me is how neovim (or any other terminal based text editor) opens inside xfce terminal instead of alacritty no matter what i do, i removed xfce terminal and now it opens up in xterm, if i remove xterm it doesn't open at all and gives me an error. when i right click a file in thunar and select Open with neovim, it opens up inside xterm, so i had to customize it so it doesn't look different than alacritty. i know this is because of my OS and not the dotfiles, but i just have no clue where that setting is buried in my system.
The ML4W Welcome app includes a function to set alacritty as the terminal. Need to spend more time in the editor integration.
Brother, please make a video on how to to use kde + hyprland or qtile for the window manager instead of kwin. Meaning all the services of kde and hyprland or qtile as window manager.
Puh. Sounds complicated. Any web resources that you can share?
This is amazing! I've been wanting to try hyprland for ages, but was scared to toss KDE.
I'm just stumped on how to rebind caps lock to the escape key. When I make a custom binding file and write it out, it tells me escape is not a vaild option. Any help would be appreciated!
Found a solution. Instead, I installed keyd and now everything works like a charm. There's a smidge of me that misses KWin and Bismuth but they were definitely the step I needed towards tiling wm
Sounds great. Thanks for your feedback.
Hello, I love the look and feel of your style. I am using Debian 12 Plasma and not Arch. I tried other methods to install Hyperland but they did not work, but will try yours. I also watched your video on Qtile and saw during this video there was a check box for Qtile below Hyperland. Is this a method to install Qtile? Thank you.
Hi. Thanks for your feedback. Currently I only support Arch based distros. But I will look into others platforms soon and will release something new….
Your dots and gtk or whichever helpers plus the clean hypr dots are a end-4 rival!
Just use arcos keybinds. Plus the symlinks are messy as heck to me I keep evrruthong in dot config.
👍
I think on 8.2.1 the instructions for updating are incorrect. The instructions on your git say to use the install.sh rather than the update.sh. Thanks for your awesome work!
The update.sh just downloads the latest version and starts the install.sh
second try i get just a blacksceen when i log into hyprland and the the mose arrow .. need help i have n old intel i5 650 with gpu on board what i do wrong ? i follow all ya steps
Thanks for your feedback.
I am about to change your life. while using plasma hold down the windows key and press t. you are welcome.
👍
YOOOO THANK UU
bro everything works fine but in the starting but after a couple of minutes the waybar stops working and due to some reasons my pc temprature starts to increase . everuthing else is good . Any help i can get ?
What is your distro?
Won't the xdg-desktop-portal-kde and xdg-desktop-portal-hyprland clash?
Also if you update QT6 theme in Hyprland will it mess up the KDE QT6 themes?
In the hyprland.conf file add this
exec-once=killall xdg-desktop-portal
Will give it a try too.
That is not a issue anymore at all, that information is outdated, there is now a xdg-portal config file that you can literally set preferences to which one which desktop should use
@@kronikpillowThanks for sharing this information.
Greeting! I just completed this process and only had one issue. However, your ML4W DotFiles tool allowed me to run a dotfiles update and it resolved the issue. This is very slick although I did have a bit of a time finding the actual config files to edit. But I got there. You've created a very smooth process here. Congrats!
I do have a question. It appears that the Alacritty terminal has a form of the "Oh My Posh" config. I use that on my other terminals and I'd like to edit it. Can you tell me where the config file(s) are located?
Again, thank you for your time and trouble! I'm enjoy the outcome here!
Hi. Thanks for your feedback. Not exactly sure what you mean but you can find the alacritty config in dotfiles/alacritty
@@mylinuxforwork Hello again. I wanted to say that my comment about "Oh My Posh" had to do with the shell prompt configuration. I wanted to change the config but didn't know what the shell was using. Turns out it's running Starship, which appears to do the same thing. I'm good to go now. Sorry for the confusion. Thanks!
@@NebulaM57 thanks for your feedback.
Hello I'm new to DEs, so when switching DEs does the current configuration save itself or it switch to defaults? Cos i spend hours to tweak KDE 😂
The configuration will not switch to default but it’s possible that minor settings will be adjusted between the DEs.
after spending little time in your dot files i noticed some things... default editor is nvim, which doesn't bother me, but micro would maybe be better for the rest of the world, you know normal edit, ctrl s to save , ctrl q to quit... second thing, when i change the mod key all the shorcuts stay writen with super (old keybind)
Thanks for your feedback. Will try out micro.
thank you for the videos. i want to install hyprland in my pc as well with latest versions. can you pls tell me how to do it from scratch. i dont want kde part. just want hyprland part. i am kind of new to this. thanx in advance
My suggestion is to use my Hyprland Starter Script gitlab.com/stephan-raabe/hyprland-starter but you can also just do sudo pacman -S hyprland
I'm left handed and how do you go about setting up a configuration for a left handed mouse? Love the project and recon there is an easy solution for this 🙂
That’s a really good question. It’s a mouse with flipped keys?
@@mylinuxforwork Yes, it's a mouse with flipped keys (buttons).
@@michaelcid I believe you have to set it up in Arch. wiki.archlinux.org/title/Mouse_buttons
Thank you, interesting content, but I would like to see more real world examples of how to do actual work on Linux. Like how to index and search through an existing batch of LibreOffice files, or sort, rename and cull through the latest 64GB sd-card dump of your camera, maybe also how to manage, rename, re-tag existing audio file collection. How to create dumps of websites including screenshot and archived html. How to get xrdp working with audio support. What ways are there to easily backup and restore files to network locations etc.. I even have trouble finding a decent image viewer for Linux which does not feel like it's 1990. All the various desktop and window manager options and their customization options are nice to have, but it feels like toying around for me with no real use case? Is it just me or is it like this on Linux? Not sure yet.. o)
Maybe we stick to one thing at a time. How to preview and sort images into 10-20 different folders, where an image always consists of a JPG and a RAW file variant, which need to be processed at once to not end up doing it all twice. Any suggestion from the Linux community on how to do this? Thanks in adavance! o)
Thanks for your feedback. To your use case, you could write a bash script doing this tasks. Bash scripting is very well documented on many web pages. And it’s a lot of fun to learn it. With this knowledge you can do any linux admin tasks.
@@mylinuxforwork You mean I shall write bash code to automatically sort the images I took with my camera? How is the bash script suppose to know if I like a picture or not and where to sort it? If you would have suggested python at least.. o) No, I guess this won't work, at least not for the process of sorting / culling images. Thank you anyway! o)
Sometimes the Linux community comes up with interesting solutions. Recently I told the developers of a picture viewer, that the dependencies cannot be met on latest Debian stable and if they could lower their compilation target to make the software work on more Linux variants. They said no, if I wanted to use the picture viewer, I just should install Linux Mint. Yeah, sure! o) I ran multiple Windows installations for 10+ years, so now I will reinstall another Linux every 6 month. What are people smoking these days? o)
Have a nice day everone!
If I do it this way, will it be possible to use Global Menu in Waybar?
I don’t think that waybar support a global menu for applications.
Oh I see, I thought that since KDE 6 runs on Wayland and Global Menu works there, there could be a way to enable it for Waybar.
Never mind, maybe there will be some further development in this matter. Would be awesome.
Helpp pls i need to disable my touchpad
wiki.hyprland.org/Configuring/Variables/#touchpad
For Arch, plasma-meta or which packages?
Would suggest to run sudo pacman -S sddm plasma plasma-meta
@@mylinuxforwork Thanks. I am confused by the Arch Wiki KDE. It states "Install the plasma-meta meta-package or the plasma group." not both. Will try in a VM and go from there. Appreciate it, great videos, as always!
No fault on you. I followed your tut but it didn't really work for me. Both the hyperland and KDE are broken for me. I can log in to both but KDE shows no toolbar or networking. Hyeprland is semi broken with networking and no terminal. I'm using Arch. I'm guessing nvidia is the cause. However, when I tried hyperland by itself some time back it worked. Keep up the good work, though. Can't wait to see it easier to work with.
Yes. The reason could be NVIDIA. It's tricky with Hyprland. Don't stop exploring....
We are not all on arch.I was on Arch 8 years and enough is enough. Can you release hyprland install scripts on Debian 12,13 maybe...
It will come later this year. Need to release some important changes of the setup before.
I have done this same thing, but one thing I noticed is that on Hyprland Vaapi under Wayland on ADMGPU Cards works, but doesn't on Plasma 6, anyone experience same issue? I can provide screenshots and system specs
Can you open an issue on Gitlab and share your screenshots?
@@mylinuxforwork i guess i could but I'm always lazy with that strict rule of do this do that when reporting bugs xD not a dev, not so tidy xD but I understand, Iv encountered many firsts that I never reported cuz of lazyness and I simply waited it out hahaha... But, yeah, share a link here as well
can u I do the same with xfce4 ?, btw amazing Video and Great Work.
Thank you. The installation starting from xfce4 should work in a similar way. But I suggest to install sddm as display manager.
Actually i am using lightdm and i don't want to remove what should i do?!
And how to increase the speed of the effect of the windows wheb they are lunching if u get what i mean and thank you
@@rougimohamed8934 would suggest sddm
I'd love to give hyprland a try.
Alas, i run nvidia.
At least, thats the only logical explaination I have for why nothint besides TTY works.
Would switching to an AMD card resolve logging into black screens? Ive assumed it has been wayland disliking my nvidia gpu.
Please check the Nvidia section of the Hyprlan Wiki. Maybe you can find there valuable information about your setup.
Not open hyprland always back password manager
Still working kde
😥😥
Hi. Can you make sure that all packages are up-to-date? Is Hyprland listed in sddm?
Hyprland with qtile side by side plz
You can install the ML4W dotfiles and select both profiles Hyprland and Qtile.
And now my system is perfect... now what do I do. Sarcasm... but I'd always switched between KDE & HYPRLAND, especially because I really wanted to try out PLASMA 6 and now I can just switch back and forth... they are both great with small pluses and minuses for each... had some problems with Garuda Hyprland and one of your earlier dotfiles install script but you've kept at it and all works great now... thanks and keep up the good work... your channel is awesome
Thank you so much for your feedback.
Tried installing arch and got an error no matter what DE I tried to install. Threw Mint on that machine for the moment but after watching this I might give it another go.

Hyprland isn't a tiling window manager. It's a tiling wayland compositor

@@mylinuxforwork how can i uninstall it ??
is there any script for that
@@manojbhatta500 There is no uninstall script for the hyprland. Just uninstall hyprland with yay -Rns hyprland The same with waybar & co. If you have installed the ML4W Dotfiles you have to wait for tomorrow when I launch 2.8.4. This will include an uninstall function where (hopefully) all dotfiles settings willl be removed. So in this case, update tomorrow (or install the rolling release today) and run the uninstaller from the ML4W Welcome app. Then remove hyprland after. Or not ;-)

Edit : Turns out the person who made this changed the conf file which made it more complicated bruh
Not sure what you mean.
You've made the dotfile script too much bloated. Even while installing the required packages, the list is still very big. It's good for n00bs that have recently installed KDE with no major packages but maybe you'd want to created a less bloated version. Great video btw 🎉
Thank you for your feedback. Please check the Hyprland Starter Package. Video will be published today. Maybe this is a better starting point for advanced users.

It is a lot of fun. Give it a try.
the lock.png icon in .config/wlogout/icons/ overlaps the word LOCK when I activate wlogout. It has a different size than the other "448x512", I resized it to 512x512 and the problem disappeared. Thank you for your great work.
I also modified sddm to use wayland:
