They are just so trash by default on ultrawide or super ultrawide 32:9 monitors where you literally NEVER want a maximized window. I do like using Kzones on KDE though so I can use configs to slice my monitor up and then either assign apps to the zones or just let KDE remember the last zone an application ran in. Also giving you a mouse or keyboard option to drop an application into a specific zone. Its a best of both worlds option.
I've been on Hyprland since Nvidia dropped the 555 beta and it has been really solid. Threw all the Nvidia fixes in the wiki at it and even resuming from sleep works with no issues. Zero issues with running games fullscreen. I would recommend that new users stick with the default config and go from there, those over-engineered ones with tons of files just make it more difficult for no tangible gain. Pick a bar, any bar, install it and try the default config. Same for a launcher. I've gravitated towards AGS and fuzzel.
Really? I configured hyprland from scratche around a year ago. But I'm using it less and less because of the graphical glitches I experienced in wayland. If a new driver is as good as you say, I'll be back to hyprland and ditch kde x11.
If you want, I think you can convert KDE into tiling window manager like hyprland or sway. I would rather stay in KDE because of its excellent support of XWayland apps on fractional scaling, and helps you to tinker a lot of things on GUI, such as if you unplug your AC adapter, you can tell KDE to use power saver mode, run custom scripts, use certain level of brightness and much more! Even tough GNOME is touch friendly, I use KDE and nowadays KDE touch makes more sense than GNOME.
I don't think that you can properly tile in any Desktop Environment unless it's properly implemented by themselves. Too many variables changing otherwise. It's why many anticipate Cosmic, which has a heavy focus on it.
KDE is so much heavier that it will never be like a tiling manager. KDE is about flash and making thing look good with animations. Not productivity, like keyboard driven WM.
i did that with my kde thanks to "Krohnkite" (a kwin script). I have a hyprland session too that took hours to set up but in the end i prefer my set up on kde: Some things "just works" (ex: swap to dedicated GPU on my laptop when needed) without having to install more stuff and tinkering with it. Of course kde is heavier but if you are on a modern pc, you wont feel really the difference and with one or two plugins you get the same animation/window decoration as Hyprland (no title bar, border with custom color around the actif window, etc...)
The only desktop environment with builtin tiling support is pop os (it's one of the biggest selling point of system76 distro, honestly) Gnome may have some extensions for tiling, but you can't customizaze keybinding, or basically any of the billions of options you have in a tiling wm. Kde is similar (hopefully tiling becomes a goal for the next two year project of kde)
Thanks, because of you today I gave hyprland a seconds chance. First time I quickly quit simply because I didn't know how to use it. This time the default config had more shortcuts setup, and after I learned them I seem to enjoy using hyprland. So who knows, maybe I'll stay.
I think people are often too intimidated by certain distros and environments. My first distro ever was arch with kde, and despite a slight learning curve, I really had no issues. Eventually, I explored hyprland and still use it to this day. So, don't be too afraid to try new things unless you have very little experience with computers.
I believe @Ja.KooLit deserves more credit for this. First, you have showed a link of HyprV4 3:34 , which is NOT JaKoolit's project but you didnt post JaKoolits projects (Arch and Fedora) anywhere on your video including on the description. but most of the videos including Hyprland configs youve used, there are no links to it. So I really think he deserve more credits for it. We are just lucky cause he try to share to us those scripts, which I think easy to understand, and follow and he does not restrict us from configuring for our own benefits. Sure its not a top notch great looking ricing compared to end-4 and prasanthrangan's and even ML4W's but JakooLit's configs is not complicated compared to those 3 I mentioned
Finally !!! You won't get as much experience with Fedora and KDE or gnome it was same for me, i got to learn all the command when i used arch+ hyprland I recommend using any dots like Prasanth rangan or end4 or jakoolit and the after you use for like half a year you should be able to make your own configs
@@codewithvenky after half a year using Prasanth dots then i created my own dots but now I can't use my pc because I have to focus on competitive exam so I'm out of Linux and pc for a year 😔
I don’t understand one thing about all these tiling managers. Why there is no normal beautiful graphical configuration for any of these? It should make adoption much easier and for those who like more, text config is always there
Thanks for the tips. Although I staying to use Wayland more, I keep running back to back X11 because of missing features and functionality (e.g., text expansion). Again, thanks and God bless
I love and currently use hyperland but I can't wait till cosmic come out to have the best of both worlds. Just don't want to have to deal with configurations
lets goo as a long time user WW tiling window managers are made for productivity wen it was covid and i was sharing my screen for shool my teacher was like thats fast i dint see your mouse cuz i use the keyboard btw if your using rofi in hurprland use rofi for wayland its in the aur if you are using arch or an arch based distro
It reminds me of Rainmeter for windows if you want to make custom ui or widgets, to be more specific in Rainmeter you can edit a config file and all all the modifications, location on the screen the size of the box and lines of text and color...what app you want to run in it..etc.
I switched from windows to arch with window managers like BSPWM, Awesome WM etc and have been on Hyprland since they released it. I tried to jump back into a desktop but just can't do it anymore. It just seems far more efficient in every way.
It technically is, but it's not suited for for every workflow. An example, I myself like window animations since they look nice and keep my flow at a steady and consistent pace. Other's find this repellent since there is no instant feedback. Preferences are different, and so is working with a WM
Watching this channel for the first time. Looks beautiful and people on YT talk a lot about it, and tiling window managers in general. I have never explored any tiler myself yet, and actually I'm just in the progress of migrating from Xfce to Plasma, which are both kind of my favourite desktops now. Actually I have both now. But since I mostly use Arch it sounds definitely attractive that Hyprland has explicit support here. Maybe one day I'll give it a try too. Are there people on this planet who still use things like Openbox or Fluxbox actually?
For me personally hyprland is the wrong environment, I like the styling aspect but that is about it. I can work much better with kde/gnome. (But this of course is personal preference!)
I feel like Hyprland is can be very interesting, but getting it just right would take a very long time. Give the update cycle, it can also break quite often, so it's not really suitable for a production machine yet
@@MichaelNROH Hyprland is not that bad, it got a great wiki you can read top to bottom, and all works, the bar is normal waybar as it is on any things wayland that is not kde/gnome. it cost me around 3 hours to get it just right, but the good thing is it never change, i don't need to do any thing to the config if we got updates, i run with the same config for 12 months now, all my games also just works, i don't need to change any thing, and if you want Hyprland to be floating, you can add 1 line to the config and all windows is floating. so PRO for DEs, i don't need 3 hours of work up front to never to need to change any thing ever again. CON you need to use a lot of time over time, to keep KDE/GNOME to look and works as you want, plugins break, updates change settings etc.
Sure, you do need to install a few packages: hyprland, waybar, swaylock, etc... but you only really need to copy yourself a waybar preset. The default hyprland config file is pretty good to start with. With the simpler/readable default config, its also more feasible to bring it up directly instead of a cheatsheet (for keybindings). Edit: Also I'm not sure what you mean about having to use the command line? For editing configs? You can open something like kate if you want to edit text in that for example. Were you using a runner? There's wofi, anyrun and I'm sure others...
I am running Hyprland on debian 12 and it did not break, though i do not think that it is for everyone, if you are on debian sid and you want to try it out you definitly can and it is pretty fun!
Hyprland needs a gui app for configuring everything on startup. It's so weird that a so modern looking WM still needs you to configure it through a file.
seriously just imagine if Microsoft just didn't f the world of computers .... if the world worked on linux instead of windows. our desktop would be in like 2065...
I’d say it doesn’t make sense to use a tiling WM unless you ALREADY have a set of programs you wanna use for a desktop. You just don’t get anything worthwhile otherwise.
Honestly have configurations in a text file with a good wiki simply allows more configurations then a GUI settings app, and also a file it's the easiest thing to save the configuration for fresh installs. But i know that a GUI settings app makes life easier, if you have a system you just want to use, and don't care too much about it
Tiling WMs are cool but to me personally to much of a hassle to set up and more of a nerdy cool thing to do. I love seeing those in Brodie's, Titus' or other people's setups but all of them lack a simple GUI that allows users to tweak settings in an easy way. It's basically the same as what has been with most desktop Linux aspects for the longest time. Plus I don't want to use either Arch or Fedora, so there's that.
As a hyprland user, I definitely don’t think it’s ready for everyone yet. Like arch, it is best suited to the kind of user that is happy to set up and fix everything themselves. Gaming/gamescope can be a pain.
I've always wanted to try hyprland but I would want to install it next to KDE Plasma in SDDM so I can occasionally dip my toes in before fully submerging in window management and I worry that'd break things on KDE or vice versa. I also heard a while back it's not as pleasant of an experience with nvidia cards as it is on AMD cards, but that might have changed since. I just need an opportunity where I can gain confidence using a window manager in general, cause I once tried i3-gaps in a VM and it felt very clunky to me. Also, since I do play video games, it would suck to have to set up a gamescope command for literally every game, I love gamescope, I think it's a linux killer app, but mainly for older games that have resolution issues, not something I'd want to set up for every game.
@@yunoxa5134 PopOS gave me a taste of tiling that I never stopped longing for, so I believe you when you say it's good. I suppose I'll just make a timeshift then install it, and if it breaks anything I'll restore to the previous timeshift.
Many recommend to create second user account and log into that one with another Desktop Environment. Helps to not mess up the same files, but you need to copy some stuff between them (or sync them).
@@MichaelNROH The problem with this is that I'd need de-duplication, and I don't use btrfs due to the fact that I heard it has a lack of case sensitivity which is no good if you mod games. If I make an entirely new home directory, I'd need to redownload _at minimum_ 50GB worth of stuff to get the most "everyday use" impression of hyprland. Also, I've tried to do this exact thing in the past with XFCE, creating a new home directory still give me a broken xfce4-desktop, so I'm reluctant to try that again.
I love hyprland and I would absolutely use it if it worked better for me. Wayland in general still is a huge problem for me, as I have an NVidia GPU. There were still massive stuttering problems for me in the browser which then were fixed in the 555 driver nvidia-beta update, but that introduced new problems. I also use a large TV via HDMI as my main display which isn't properly recognized and turns off most of time, when I log into hyprland. I got it to work from time to time, but this problems is also not fixed for me yet. Steam also wouldn't launch games properly. I will definitely keep trying to fix it, but i3 with x11 just works once properly set up. I really hope that in the future there will be better support for NVidia with hyprland once the new drivers go into the standard repository. If you have similar problems and have found a fix I would be more than thankful if you could share your solution and try it out :D
Oh, I don't know how accurate the 'Debian 12 won't build' comment was. I was pretty successful building Hyprland on Debian 12 multiple times, at least as far as I remember... Though it might have been on Debian Sid too?
I've actually tried it about 2 weeks ago but ended up going back to budgie because of certain issues. (The entire OS just crashing without any logs whatsoever) I will try to get back to it soon though.
Hyprland is imo the best tiling wm in terms of ease-of-us (if you don't count pop-shell) and convenience but I will wait until it gets more stable and the new bugs popping up with every new update become less, because that was annoying. Vaxry is doing an amazing job tho and unlike other developers of a certain desktop doesn't disregard every request with "why would you even do it"
The irony that you mentioned wayland is more secure and showed a clip of screen recording is that on hyprland (and other wlroots based compositors) is that any application can record the screen without any user permission or popup, just like on x11.

Yeah, fullscreen or games that at least try to be exclusive behave very weird with the dynamic resizing. Could be fixed with Window Rules so that they always float, but it's still not the best implementation
You really don't need to customize a tiling window manager if you dont want to. That is after you have customized your tiling window manager for 2 years straight.
Nah a month is already enough to be happy about the configuration. Honestly it was harder for me to customize waybar to my likings, hyprland was pretty fast to configurate

I do like using Kzones on KDE though so I can use configs to slice my monitor up and then either assign apps to the zones or just let KDE remember the last zone an application ran in. Also giving you a mouse or keyboard option to drop an application into a specific zone. Its a best of both worlds option.
@@drubizzy Why are ultrawides bad for tiling window manager?
You found an amazing template for your config!
Neat. I think I'll stay with KDE. Mine is all set and looks / runs great.
@@DestaleClyde isn't Krohnkite dead? last time i checked we had to use polonium...
The only desktop environment with builtin tiling support is pop os (it's one of the biggest selling point of system76 distro, honestly)
Gnome may have some extensions for tiling, but you can't customizaze keybinding, or basically any of the billions of options you have in a tiling wm.
Sure its not a top notch great looking ricing compared to end-4 and prasanthrangan's and even ML4W's but JakooLit's configs is not complicated compared to those 3 I mentioned
thanks ❤
@@Ja.KooLit much love for the configs
We really love JaKooLit's hyprland configuration, don't we? 😂❤
thanks bro. But probably thats because I was the only one who's brave and crazy enough to have a one dots for alot of distros including fedora 😂
Finally !!!
You won't get as much experience with Fedora and KDE or gnome it was same for me, i got to learn all the command when i used arch+ hyprland
I recommend using any dots like Prasanth rangan or end4 or jakoolit and the after you use for like half a year you should be able to make your own configs
I'm using Prasanth files So convenient and simple
@@codewithvenky after half a year using Prasanth dots then i created my own dots but now I can't use my pc because I have to focus on competitive exam so I'm out of Linux and pc for a year 😔
Waybar is the top bar. Waybar. You can add all those separate config files into the main hypr config file if you prefer.
You have that greatscott vibe in your voice lmao
Great Vid man
that hint button 👀
JaKooLit has an amazing script thats functional
Just what I was looking for
I don’t understand one thing about all these tiling managers.
Just don't want to have to deal with configurations
lets goo as a long time user WW tiling window managers are made for productivity wen it was covid and i was sharing my screen for shool my teacher was like thats fast i dint see your mouse cuz i use the keyboard
btw if your using rofi in hurprland use rofi for wayland its in the aur if you are using arch or an arch based distro
I tried hyprland and i really like it. It is the better windows manager imo.
@@MichaelNROH i3 is simple
@Arthur-jg4ji Don't use i3. Use Sway because it's bascially i3 but a tiling Wayland compositor instead of an XOrg tiling window manager.
@@cameronbosch1213 but i have nvidia and the last time i had wayland some app didn't work well
Oh no... He... He actually went down the rabbit hole...
Maybe credit the developer whom’s install script you used? Even in the description? Seems like the right thing to do.
Hyprland was great as the first distro... the fifth time I installed it.
I’d say it doesn’t make sense to use a tiling WM unless you ALREADY have a set of programs you wanna use for a desktop. You just don’t get anything worthwhile otherwise.
Yall i literally just intalled hyprland and i think its meant to be
The only reason I'm using this is because people will instantly know I'm an Arch user. That's if people even know that is heheheh....
I have a really extensive config on my git to help new comers, still working on stuff though, but it already has really good documentation
Great to hear
I wish these came configured already. I hate to configure things. I like how they look at the end, but don't want to do it myself.
The scripts come pre-configured, but some stuff like monitor or keyboard adjustments need to be handled by the user.
I'm not a flying dutch guy, but KDE Plasma was a simpler concept to understand. Namastè.
great overview. Looks beautiful but I don't see what couldn't have been done with KDE, theming, and some custom applets 🤔
Thank you for covering this. Unfortunately, it's not my cup of tea. I really like a good GUI to configure all the things.
There is a reason on why so many experiences exist. Everyone has their preferences and that's good
Honestly have configurations in a text file with a good wiki simply allows more configurations then a GUI settings app, and also a file it's the easiest thing to save the configuration for fresh installs.
But i know that a GUI settings app makes life easier, if you have a system you just want to use, and don't care too much about it
OH NO! He's going full Brodie!
Almost a full BTW bro
Tiling WMs are cool but to me personally to much of a hassle to set up and more of a nerdy cool thing to do.
I love seeing those in Brodie's, Titus' or other people's setups but all of them lack a simple GUI that allows users to tweak settings in an easy way.
It's basically the same as what has been with most desktop Linux aspects for the longest time.
Plus I don't want to use either Arch or Fedora, so there's that.

I understood absolutely nothing 😂, but I loved the background at 4:48, if I may ask, could you share the source please .. 🙏🏽
Could never get use to tiling. Too many key binds to remember lol. Guess I am not nerdy enough.
Finally
If only wayland could properly import gtk and qt module for my fcitx, i would be switching to wayland long time ago...
next i3, awesome and dwm
I love hyprland and I would absolutely use it if it worked better for me.
Wayland in general still is a huge problem for me, as I have an NVidia GPU.
There were still massive stuttering problems for me in the browser which then were fixed in the 555 driver nvidia-beta update,
but that introduced new problems.
Hyprland with the new 555 nvidia drivers will be awesome!
It is, try to install it now or wait till the official 560 stable version.
Whats best for windows. Newbie but interested in the dynamic features. Thanks
That is an absolute banger of a background image. Where can i find it? :D @1:48
Oh, I don't know how accurate the 'Debian 12 won't build' comment was. I was pretty successful building Hyprland on Debian 12 multiple times, at least as far as I remember... Though it might have been on Debian Sid too?
Hyprland doesn't build at all on stable. 12 is not SID, neither Testing.
I've actually tried it about 2 weeks ago but ended up going back to budgie because of certain issues. (The entire OS just crashing without any logs whatsoever) I will try to get back to it soon though.
You should try a scrolling window manager like Niri or the Hyprscroller plugin for Hyprland (although it's out of date right now)
It's not for beginners, but how can anyone stop being a beginner if they don't try? Just install and learn how to use this.
how did you get the multiplication sign ??
NO I am happy with my KDE Plasma
Hyprland is imo the best tiling wm in terms of ease-of-us (if you don't count pop-shell) and convenience but I will wait until it gets more stable and the new bugs popping up with every new update become less, because that was annoying. Vaxry is doing an amazing job tho and unlike other developers of a certain desktop doesn't disregard every request with "why would you even do it"
The irony that you mentioned wayland is more secure and showed a clip of screen recording is that on hyprland (and other wlroots based compositors) is that any application can record the screen without any user permission or popup, just like on x11.
When I used Hyprland it had a popup to request permission to record the screen.
I was fairly sure I had to use a desktop portal to do that, but okay???

Yeah, fullscreen or games that at least try to be exclusive behave very weird with the dynamic resizing. Could be fixed with Window Rules so that they always float, but it's still not the best implementation
You really don't need to customize a tiling window manager if you dont want to. That is after you have customized your tiling window manager for 2 years straight.
Nah a month is already enough to be happy about the configuration.
Honestly it was harder for me to customize waybar to my likings, hyprland was pretty fast to configurate

interested to try it but it does look like a lot of configuration to get things going like the monitor placement etc. I'll wait until the big wlroots move is done(or it hits 1.0) so it won't break that often.
