Pebble Steel Review

- The Pebble Steel is nothing revolutionary. Even the industrial design - the one thing they changed - isn't exactly groundbreaking, but it's definitely a really nice upgrade for previous Pebble owners who are looking for something a little nicer.

I cracked up at, 'Pebble! what the heck, man?!'
It’s 2019 and I think I might buy this watch even though it’s 5 years old
Do it. Also be sure to set it up with Rebble
buy any of the pebbles to be honest, they're all great
@@Vynncent pebble rebble on the playstore?

2021, and I am getting one as well. Still better than any of the modern smartwatches, and the app/watchface ecosystem is still amazing.
I've been using a Pebble Steel for about 3 months now. I like it very much and I am very happy with the product. It does exactly what I need and want. More over their support is excelent, I had a small problem with my first sent pebble steel and they replaced it without any problems or too many questions asked. I strongly recommend it to whom ever needs a smartwatch for basic things (notifications, fitness app interaction, music remote)
Why does linus talk about his own experience of customer support with companies? They know who he is and wouldn't dare push him aside like us in regards to technical support and stuff. if any of us average joes tried to replace/repair an item we'd have a harder time than him.
I guess if anyone who watches this experiences a different outcome, he could always make a topic in their forum. Afaik, Linus would then mention it to the company or in a review/wan show.
He uses a separate email with no affiliation with Linus Media Group or Linus Tech Tips. That is why it matters. Please stop assuming everything before making such statement.
I loved the b-roll of the pebble steel. Very professionally done! Keep up the amazing work you guys do at Linus Media Group.
Wow! I'm actually thinking about buying this smartwatch.
awesome lighting in this video and awesome video as always
ePaper , not eInk. Not the same thing ... eInk isn't fast but ePaper does require a little current all the time.
I have the original pebble in red and I have a lot of people that come to my work recognize what it is and have good comments about it.
Great video, hopefully these come out soon
Awesome job with reviews always
It's always nice to hear about how a manufacturer handles it's customers. If I'm going to buy something, I want to know I won't be left in the dark if something goes wrong.
Also that brushed stainless steel finish looks niiiiice!
Y u upload at 2 AM EST Linus???? Thats prime time viewership. Post at like 3-8 where people are getting out of school or work.
You're a pro I know but just a tip.
You know... There are more countries in the world than yours.
lol get educated fool
***** xD
because contrary to popular belief in the usa there are countries other than your own.
not to mention, its YT - You can watch it any time and many times
Please do a review of the Fitbit. It's a wrist activity tracker with some features you might find interesting.
1:13 im getting the same problem, might try to get a new one from them when i get back
Still rocking my regular black Pebble. Love it, waiting for the moto 360.
Can you please put links in the description for people on mobile(when there is annotations in the video).
Would look more appealing if the screen took up the whole watch face.
I do hope the extra space (not occupied by screen) is vital for electronics.
You are great in reviewing. Was impressed by your Pebble review XD Keep going :)
Buying one of these in 2017, still one of the only smart watches that gives amazing battery life, and is pretty much waterproof.
3:02 Leather is actually considered more formal for a watch. Dress watches tend to have leather straps, while steel is more often found on diving/sport watches. Many people these days wear metal watches in formal situations though. I would say they are more versatile.
Nice vid linus, keep up the good work ;D
How do you feel about the USB 3.0 charge cable for the Galaxy S5?
I got my matte black one a few months ago. It. is. AWESOME.
you should really do a review on the AOC G2460PQU gaming monitor as i am looking forward to buying one
so pebble, very steel, much review. loving te vids
Such wow
Been throwing around the idea of getting a smartwatch for awhile, and this kinda pushed me more towards getting one, specifically a Pebble.
They didn't include a screwdriver with the units they shipped earlier on. All I have to say is trying to find a 1.2mm 5/64 slotted screwdriver or whatever it is was a huge pain. I'm glad they've finally started to include them. I've had mine since release and +1 on the durability comment. I've accidentally hit mine on so many walls and it doesn't even have a scratch on it. Also, do you not remember that Apple had a different cable before the Lightning? Same thing. I don't imagine they'll change it again.
Hey, how do you upgrade to the latest and greatest! What's your job? :)
that background Farris though.
Just because there is a tardia doesn't mean you have to point it out. Might as well just say "ooh there's a wall. And look a desk!"
hey im looking for a smart watch that really only has one idea. its a watch that has headphones for it. i can play music on it, and it doesnt need bluetooth for it to work. anything?
Given the current price point on amazon ~$60, and the state of the company - is this watch still a viable smartwatch? I understand that it'll remain functional through 2017, and I assume basic functions, such as showing the time, and notifications will still work after 2017.
Is this still a good smart watch?
I'd say so
I have several smart watches in 2021 and still keep going back to my Pebble. Still imo the best.
@@John_Ridley thanks
Would you be able to do a test for how waterproof the pebble steel is?
I love my Steel. What will pebble do to combat the moto 360 and possibly iWatch?
Look that fancy lights on Linus face, such luminosity
My original pebble glitched to... But their support was amazing, same thing happened as with linus
I think im gonna buy a pebble
I really want the matte black one. But im pretty scared that it will be easily scuffed. Is there anyone here that have anything to say about that? Is it easily scuffed?
What laptop did he b-roll it on at 5:30 ?
LOL. 5 months shipping :D And glitching screen on orange one? You just bought it!
Yup apparently it's a pretty common issue.
*I'm glitching myself. Ignore this post.*
Frank Ong Yet another reason to convince that I don't want and dont't need one. Kinda like tablets. I have no use for one :D
Do you plan on buying a pebble time or pebble time steel when they come out?
anyone else catch the edit at 2:14 ? microphone quality sounds different from the rest of the video;)
LOL. " scratched the beejeebus OUT of my original pepple"
The only reason why they changed it was to improve the loose connection of the original Pebble. The magnetic charger is now much more secure because of the new design. How many of the original Pebble charging cables did you buy for your watch anyway?
Do a review on the Lenovo Y50
Damn I miss this
We FINALLY get the reason to the age old question: "why aren't u wearing ur pebble?" cuz he was wearing it in EVERY video for quite a while.
What laptop was that @5:33
Quick question, when you talked to tech support, for getting a new pebble, didi they now your linus or did they think your any random joe?
Waiting to see if the Moto 360 will be any good. That's probably the one I'll invest in if it ends up being a solid product.
Yay, it no longer looks like a kids watch you'd find in a happy meal.
I got one and they are amazing!
The original pebble classics charging magnet isn't strong enough for it to be placed on.
Where did you get that shirt?
If it had a touchscreen with a better display, it'd be a definite buy. But for now, I gotta wait for the Moto 360, which I think will be my go to unless if its over 300.
Hey Linus, why don't you check out the Sony smartwatch 2, it has a a touchscreen, 3rd party app support and it's also waterproof. I think you could do a review on it since there doesn't seem like many people know it even exists.
This is the best Pebble. I've tried the classic, time round... even the Apple Watch and I always return to my Pebble Steel. Love the simplicity, battery life, looks and it's really hard to scratch or damge.
Diego Morales does it track fitness too?
Yes, you can find some fitness apps on the Pebble Store, however, it does not support Pebble Health.
4:23 : Why is the Apple lightning connector a better solution than micro-usb? Form? Bandwidth? Something else? Just curious. Also the pebble steel looks very nice, though I just can't get over the low resolution of the e-ink display. The clock screen that was shown just looked awful to me. It fits my style and desired function well despite this, but I still think I'll stick to my cool dumb watches.
the lightning connector is easier to work with/plug in/is able to be plugged in both ways, and isn't one sided.
For the new price of $150, the pebble steel is at a pretty reasonable price. Thinking about buying :)
The same thing happened to my original pebble and they sent me a new one too
$250 though... I bought the original Pebble the second it hit Best Buy and I actually got the last one in the region they went so fast. Since the Pebble, I've purchased the Samsung Galaxy Gear 1 ($299) and I just ordered an LG G Watch running Android Wear ($229).
The Pebble is a great device and I still use mine sometimes, but they are TOO expensive now. $250 for a Pebble Steel that does LESS than the Gear Neo ($199) or both the Gear Live($199) and G Watch($229)? I think the Steel needs to be between $150 and $199, and the OG Pebble between $99 and $129. Yes, they're great devices, but now the big boys are here an Pebble needs to cut prices to stay relevant.
Should I get a Pebble, with Android Wear coming out this summer?
Is that a tardis in the background ?
do moto 360 2nd gen
So you're gonna have to try out the LG G Watch. It's price point, battery life, functionality are all comparable to the Pebble and it has an IPS screen!
Can you do a video on why you hate micro-usb and compare it to other connectors?
The amount of people taking advantage of a programmable watch into an exam room must be high :p
I have a White Pebble, and I get the "What the heck is that?" comments all the time!
I really like my pebble very useful in my day to day life. But steel looks nice too I might upgrade when this one craps out.
Pebble Time Round?
I just bought a Pebble the other day. Though I'm still kicking myself for not timing my purchase correctly (now I have to wait over the weekend and two days more), I'm pretty excited for it, and I might be buying a third-party screen protector for it; scratchable plastic makes me very paranoid.
I've also heard about the newer Pebble firmware having some compatibility issues with the Galaxy S4 (my current phone). Hopefully, that's not something I run into, and I *really* hope my inability to update my phone past Jelly Bean doesn't hurt my Pebble experience. If so, I'll have to finally send into AT&T for a new one (which I've needed to do anyway).
***** Android that's why your having prolamo
and they just came out with the pebble time XD I feel bad for you a bit
Niceguy3210 haha, well I wasn't prepared to wait another three months and spend like $300 on something I wasn't sure I wanted. Now that I've had a Pebble for a while (which was only $100) I know for sure that I want a Pebble Time
ONE QUESTION! The plastic version is confortable to worck out? and the steal one?
(well yes 2 questions but one bla bla...)
wait did Linus get two Pebble Steels ? what a baller
I spy that tardis model in the background behind you
got the black matte like 2 months ago its simple which is good batt life goes for about 5-6 days for me normal use for me was getting notifications from games and a text or 2 in those 5ish days
i got this watch because my old watch broke on me may it rip but if u want somthing simple like me then this is a buy but if u want somthing that has more morrrrrrre functions then look somwhere else and thats my 2 cents
*Would still buy the Pebble Steel*
nice review but wow that Lens has so much chromatic aberration going on gees
I have one and I am very happy with the aesthetic and integration with my Nexus Android phone. I have one major issue with it though. The front glass is clamped in with a small 1-2mm lip around the top edge which is fine way of holding the glass on. However there is a hairline gap between the glass and the lip of the metal. Run your finger nail along and you can feel it is rough. I was OK with this but after a Month I noticed it started to capture dirt in that lip. Now I am sure it is waterproof, so no dirt or dust is going under the lip but it does catch stuff there which is annoying and you have to use your finger nail to try and get rid of it. But it never really clears and looking down at it on my wrist now I can see tiny particles/crumbs along the bottom edge beneath the pebble logo. I have several tough style watches from Casio and they don't suffer this kind of issue and have a clean case to glass fitting. So an epic watch, love the long charge and integration but they need to work on the seal between the metal case lip and the glass. That little bit of extra design perfection would really "seal the deal" :).
I think you can solve the issue by putting on a third party glass protector?
Gruntz 15mm from Rottenlead Wargames Will pouring some water over it help removing dust on that gap?
I love the idea of the pebble. I disliked the implantation of the pebble, even the gloss black just didn't look professional. If we are honest it was an attention grabbing toy look, not something I'd choose to wear outside of tech, geek or gaming based events and gathering if I was given another styling option.
However there was no other option, so while I'd have used a pebble everyday and loved the shit out of it if I'd been given or won one, I honestly couldn't justify the price tag. It pains me (and probably the majority of male customers) that looks actually where a deal breaker, especially given normally I don't really give much thought to what I'd wear, but given the size of the pebble, and the fact that I'm not about to own more than one expensive watch, it was the excuse I could use to avoid actually paying for one.
Fortunately pebble has realized this and fixed all my (and clearly many other peoples) concerns about the pebble, but it comes with one major caveat, the once expensive watch is now WAY more expensive than it even even was, so I'm still in the boat of trying to justify not paying THAT much for a watch they'll probably be completely useless in 4-5 years of technological advancements, when they finally get rid of Bluetooth or similar. Sigh, pebble, some days I think you and I are just not to be...
There is a tardis in the background! 1:00
So what does it do?
I was going to get a pebble just so I would know who was calling or texting me while I'm driving so I could decide whether or not I needed to pull off and make a call or text. However, my new car has Bluetooth and a 7" screen that tells me all these things so I won't be buying one. Will note though, the new metal ones are very nice if you plan to buy one.
almost ordered this.. then I saw the Moto 360 and decided to wait and see how that one is
In europe evey company needs to use micro usb in the future. Even apple.
***** I completely agree. Mini usb is only harder to put in the very thin phones. (For the factory to make it) so that is probably why they use micro usb.
I found a little more information about it.
The standard will start in 2016. Even apple needs to use it. And an adapter is not allowed. They are also working on a standard for tablets and laptops (I'm so happy that there will be a universal charger for laptops)
Animiles I know right? I love europe.
I do admit like Linus said the Lightning connector is kind of nice and seems better than microUSB. - Since it's reversible.
Frank Ong Apple won't let others use their connector
looks awesome!
Ominous mouse like object moving at 1:30
It was a car.... Facepalm lol
Sure, lightning MIGHT be better if the buggers actually shared the technology with anyone el- oh yeah, it's Apple.
Why would you run out and buy a new cable when you get a new watch? The watch comes with the cable you need. It last 5 to 7 days, not like you need n emergency charger.
More of an introduction to Pebble Steel rather than a review but still......Thumbs Up...!!
OMG I LOVE YOU CAKE! wait.
Now, just need to wait for the Moto 360. :)
Yes, priced at $100.00 on StraightTalk wireless. THEN I'm interested.
So...
I really want a smart watch because i dont have a watch and i like the notifications on the go and such
But 250$ is a tad bit too much for me
Could anybody list the difference from pebble to pebble steel?
I know the gorilla glass, LED, metal band and style but is there any more like space for apps or reaction time?
Thanks in advance for the answers :)
You listed all the differences. Like Linus said, it just has better design; hardware (SoC, screen, battery, storage) is identical.
They still sell the regular Pebbles for $150
sony smartwatch 2
Ok thanks for the information, gonna get a normal one (more affordable price)
Just saying, Ive seen many basic watches that are way pricier than this... I don't blame you though, I wouldn't spend that either XD
Why not doing wireless charging on the watches???
4:31 golden moment :)
Does the metal wristband pull on your arm hair like some cheap watches do?
Cost?
Hmm,. I got the Sony Smartwatch 2,. It's absolutely amazing. Linus why haven't you make any review on that,.. In my opinion, it will beat the pepple with miles. Colorscreen, also gorilla glas, easy setup with your smartphone. It's absolute competitive to the pepple. I work as a windowcleaner, and believe me, here the watch will get totally testet in every way. It's so robust and because it's also waterproof, it's still going :-)
What justifies the price difference between the original and the steel?
Steel casing
Gorilla glass
Thinner bezel
You know, things he *points out in his video!*
Colour and b-roll is better...what did you change?! :)
