- What? Girlfriend is evolving!
Pokemon is a game we've gotten 151 requests to play, but it's always been a challenge to figure out where to start. Making her play a Nuzlocke for her first official run of a main series game might have been a little bit cruel, but I think it helped push her to learn the game a lot faster. All of this was part of a much bigger scheme to play some Pokemon together on Date Night, but we had to start somewhere. That's how I made my girlfriend play Pokemon FireRed!

No, it's MADE her play Pokémon... So there's an element of coercion? Is there a penalty for not playing Pokémon? A punishment? Is it blackmail, perhaps? Blink twice if you need help, girlfriend!
Can we take a moment to appreciate that the venusaur still knew tackle at the end of the game
tbh, if you are not teaching it tms or cut what it's supposed to have? its movepool is really bad in the early gens

I know that everything works offline, but there are so many interesting moves other than tackle. Pretty sure you can also teach it Strength in case you don't want to waste TMs.
But tbh, she already had Nidoking for poisoning. Maybe tackle was indeed the only option.
I usually put Strength on my starter and keep it there until the end of the game.
Dude my first game was alpha sappire and I played it so much that my blaziken, toasty, was level 100 and still knew ember and peck and double kick.

I gotta say I’ve watched all of these now but I really wish you’d go through the elite four battles individually. Love the content though keep it up!

I think i would really enjoy an hour long vid of these two learning the type matchup and trying to justify them
My favorite explanation for type matchup has to be a psychic type weaknesses. Psychic is weak to Bug, Dark, and Ghost because people are afraid of Bugs, Darkness, and Ghosts.
I personally love 'if you're afraid of the dark... punch it.'
Why is poison weak to psychic or dark weak to fighting?
@@ThatReplyGuy Meditation can heal poison. Dark types use underhanded tricks, Proper Fighting Technique beats unfair fighters.
The first is "smart man knows cure to poison" and the latter is "training and discipline triumphs over the bad guys dirty tricks"
You guys should do a soul link date night for another Pokémon game

@@JayceCH. Pokemon is an easy game if you have the knowledge and no restrictions but playing it as a Nuzlocke and learning as you go is actually kind of difficult.

@@hussainalaiwi9270 There's lots of weird stuff with the typing, that's kinda based not just in "logic" but also in myths and urban legends and shit.
Like rocks taking down birds is a simple image, but then you get more "fun" ideas like psychics/espers being afraid of bugs and ghosts.
With the bug/fighting interaction you can take it both ways. Either the logical way: Exoskeleton shields them from a lot of blunt force or the more out there explanation that you'd need finesse over brawn to squash a bug.

As for me I just refer to my mons as their hender(provided I can remember on a whim) and non-gendered pokemon as "they." The series has always hammered in that Pokemon are invredibly sentient creatures with wants and desires, so only referring to the crew as a bunch of "its" put me off even as a kid who didn't know what I was doing lol
I'm impressed how well she did against the elite 4 with her mons mostly low 50s
First time I played this game I had an overleveled Charizard (with 4 fire type moves), Zapdos and Snorlax, and still struggled to beat without running out of PP.
I got destroyed by Lorelei around that lv
The sniffles when she had to deposit Pidgeotto and Diglett, my heart! This was such an immensely wholesome experience and I would adore more Pokémon content featuring the both of you, your partner is a Treasure and needs to be protected 💔😭
Honestly for a first FireRed playthrough, she did FANTASTIC and the reasoning for why Grass and PAPER beats Rock because they're made from plants, killed me 😆
The fact Baby Bok still had Tackle at the elite four is baffling to me.
What if she ran into a normal type? Gotta have something for them.

Reminds me of my 1st playthrough. I eventually had a lvl 100 venusaur (post game) with the moves, razerleaf, solarbeam, cut, and... tackle

Not gonna lie, having a nuzlocke be the first introduction to the series seemed a bit devilish at first, but it proved to be a great teaching method
That casual walk past the Indigo Plateau PokeMart made me laugh so hard, knowing she was underleveled lol
It really took me aback how many levels lower she was.

6:00 bro that is true. I learned type match up as a child and now I just have it memorized for no reason. Like I remember the Pokédex better than the multiplication table
There was an article that came out a few years ago that stated kids who grew up with pokemon developed memorizational skills differently than other people. Whether it's true or not is up for grabs, but I can definitely remember the damage percentage of a Shuckle with Rollout better than I can remember sinple daily tasks 💀
Considering how attached she got with the Pokemon and her reaction to losing them, I would love to see her reaction to Pyre

Congrats on your first nuzlocke victory! You did amazing for someone basically new to the series!
Girlfriend *is* evolving, though! It's always so fun to see her branch out and be open to new experiences. Even if those experiences aren't for her, I'm still glad she tries them out. Experimentation is everything in life, and it seems that she has a good handle of rolling with the punches.
RIP Finch tho, he was good boy.
Diamond pearl and platinum were my favorite, especially since they implemented the special and physical attacks split, which made some pokemon much more viable.

I'll never forget how useful the in-game guide was to me, since FireRed was the first video game I ever owned.
This game taught me a lot about how games work lol

Given her experience with the souls games and now her new intro to permanent death, I wonder how Girlfriend would fare in the Darkest Dungeon.
I'd love to see her play even more Pokemon games, I think she'd enjoy the varied environments and stories of each with enough familiarity to be grasped quickly (every game being about an evil team whose goals differ, champion fight, rival fight etc)
I was kinda hoping she'd comment on the absolutely bonkers music at some point. Music's always been kind of a great part of the Pokemon games and the insane drum shenanigans during the elite four battles are just such a great way to pump you up.
I mean you single those drums out and you could fit them in a death metal track.
Only thing I can hope for now is that we get a continuation, where she not only gets introduced to the fairy type, but also to the fact that attacks aren't just "fire", but also physical/special now.
But for now I can only say congratulations. First nuzlocke can be tough, but she got through with surprisingly few losses and swept the elite four easily.
This makes me wanna see her play Pokémon DP/Platinum just so she can hear the piano intro for Cynthia.
I would watch an entire video of you two discussing the type strengths and weaknesses. That was the best part of this.
Damn, pushing her through a Nuzlocke was great. We used to play with friends where we would sync up our pokemon (if my first dies, so do my friend's first), it was absolute chaos and forced us to really push hard.
That’s called a Soul Link just so you know. Honestly such a brutal version of a Nuzlocke too; did one for BW that was pain
I did that too but with USUM and with my brother and with a randomizer. I got Kyurem as my starter but got screwed when the 1st Kahuna sent out Mega Diancie. We were so sad, because Kyurem died so my brother’s Mew got booted.
I stumbled on this video through my recommendeds, and I’m SO glad I did. I enjoyed it so much that I binged through all the other “Made My Girlfriend Play” videos in a day, and they didn’t disappoint. The dynamic between you two is so playful and positive, and it’s a breath of fresh air!

I always had the logic of "bug eats grass, bird eats bug, throw rocks at birds" in my mind as well.
I've been playing pokemon since the beginning - I've played one of each mainline generation game, up to Scarlet/Violet as of recent. I still only remember half the type matchups at most. Sometimes its more fun to catch and level your friends than pushing all that battle info into your brain.
Nuzlocke against Red was super fun. Totally didn't lose my sanity.

Your ‘dead’ Pokémon are just so dramatic they dramatically fell over and refuse to get up, and forever chant “oh woe is me” and “tell my mother I love her” in the box

Idk if it helps her confidence to hear, but the way she works out the typings (bugs eat grass, birds eat bugs, birds die to rocks etc) is exactly how i remember them too. Mind over body = psychic beats fighting. I can fight sleep = fighting beats dark, muscle men crush rocks etc etc. You get the idea. Its extremely important to remember however best you can. And honestly logic can take you a long way in guess work (most of the time).

I’ve been seeing someone for 2 months in a dating context (we’ve known each other for about 5 years or so). I’m currently playing Resident Evil: Village since he’s a fan of the series and I’m hoping to get him to do a Soul Link or Nuzlocke of a Pokémon game. Watching this video was too cute and really got me excited about the prospect of introducing someone I care about to a series that means a lot to me- keep up the great work guys! :)
this is so much fun but ngl I wish we could have gotten a lot MORE of her playthrough. I kept seeing hints of really cute and fun stuff in the video footage and I would have loved to hear more about and see more of her making her way through the various gyms and dungeons and her process for choosing moves and her team! def gonna watch the other videos with gen 2 and 3 right now!

17:17 that's actually a pretty smart way to memorize it, there are some weird unexplainable match ups, like poison fighting interactions and other one way advantages/disadvantages, but that's still a solid way to face it

Loved seeing the movesets for the E4! Electrode with Spark and Swift, as well as Venasaur with Tackle. We really optimize these games way too much, it was refreshing watching someone brand new play the game.

This is making me feel so nostalgic. Pokemon was one of the first games i ever played and the joy and experience owning my first console is and will always be one of my greatest memories. I hope to one day share that joy with my nephews and future children.

It is a bit crazy to think about how even as a little kid, I had a general gist of type weaknesses overall (I first played Pokemon Firered when I was like 5 so I had an early start but still)
Seeing someone genuinely surprised by Giovanni/Blue gives me the same secondhand seratonin hit as someone genuinely experiencing the Vader twist for the first time. I LOVE it
I also squeed with joy when Tarny beat Noiky.
Also another interesting thing to note is that FireRed/LeafGreen are the last Pokemon games before the type changes and Physical/Special split so FRLG are their own unique beast that many a Nuzlocker love to challenge, great video and congratulations on the Girlfriend beating her first Nuzlocke 👍
6:01 True! I remember I had a previous girlfriend try it playing Tony Hawk with me, and since I played the series as they came out the mechanics didn't seem too complicated. It wasn't until I started explaining how to play that I realized how much there was to the game 😂

3:00 This is how my girlfriend games too 😂 She spends so much time on the smallest little things and I get impatient. Im always like, "CAN YOU PLAY THE GAME?!" while she plays cards with people at a tavern in Red Dead or gets way too into the story of a side quest 😂
