I’m trying out this new format where I just share whatever ideas that are top of mind. This will not be in lieu of the lectures & interviews but hopefully a more casual medium where I can talk about ideas that more people might relate to. Please let me know in the comments what you think of this new format!
Hello Jonathon. I admire this candid honesty dude. This makes you more of a philosopher than sterile analysts, by all measures. Your describing evolving A.I. as a kind of "humbling" process for humanity also resonates deeply. It does feel that way, doesn't it? As if we're supposed to learn our limitations before we can transcend them. This feels deeply spiritual to me. Do you tend to agree, and if so, what do you think might be the purpose of such a humbling process?
Please interview Evan Thompson. Embodiment or corporeality and other concepts flowing out of Merleau-Ponty are more relevant than ever for philosophizing.
This format is like a fresh wind to me. Instead of seeing a philosopher with nice suit talking about highly sophisticated things, I now see you in a closer, more relatable image. I believe that this new format will bring you great success. Looking for the next videos!

great stuff brother. as a software dev, I felt the same dread when I first encountered gpt3 but then I had a similar realization that I identified too much with my profession and realized how truly lucky I was to enjoy what I do and that technical progress will help others also be fulfilled as I am. as intelligence/creativity become commoditized, authentic human experience will be more valuable than ever. keep moving and leave plenty of space for wonder! side note: as a new subscriber, I love the videos but felt like they lacked that youtube-style human connection somewhat and often felt more like something I would see on TV-probably due to the superb aesthetics and professionalism of each video. I really welcome this new format as it feels more wholesome and less formal
As a fellow software dev, I'll give you a warning though to make sure your house is paid of ASAP. AI is targeting STEM jobs first in its training. If you look at what it's doing to the art and music industry, where AI already surpasses human ability, you'll get a glimpse of what's in store for us. When Dall-E came out, the next year the number of graphics designer jobs dropped by half. As for music, with zero talent, I can enter a prompt in Suno and create a AAA song that is on par with anything on Spotify. Lots of people are filling Spotify with AI generated music, trying to make easy money and making it harder for new music artists to compete. They don't care that music pays next to nothing, it's easy money. Now apply that same behavior and mindset to a 6 figure job like software development... It's easy to see how people will jockey for the few remaining jobs, each person offering less than the last to try to sweeten the deal until we're glorified burger flippers with an expensive mortgage.
Johnathan, I just wanted to let you know that you have been a really great inspiration to me and likely many others. The human to human connection, the indescribable nuances, especially in fields where hyper scrutiny for efficiency isn’t the goal will likely always create avenues for humanity. I am looking forward to your series!

"I treated philosophy as primarily production instead of cultivation." Gold. This intersection is what I'm (trying) to live as a philosopreneur. Love this new format Johnathan!
I just discovered your channel. This topics really resonates with me and popped into my feed at the right time, I really understand your take on it and agree with it. Your way of articulating your thought in such a structured way in a single take is really impressive dude. I want to keep working at it til I am even a fraction as good as you. Excellent job
How about calling it musings in motion? Mumo. So rather than writing a memo, you’re walking a Mumo. Hey, where did Jonathan go? Oh, he went off to walk a mumo. And now I think you can even have a logo for it: a dog that’s proudly walking itself with a leash in its mouth.
So glad I discovered your content - you seem very authentic and honest. I’m in highschool and I’m gonna study philosophy next year in university 🤞🏻 very exciting!!!
It's very interesting to see people from different backgrounds and their reaction to AI, so much of people's fears can be summed up as fear of being replaced and financial struggle. Most of my fears with AI stem from its ability to affect how people traditionally reason. An example would be traditionally, I see the footage of my neighbour committing a crime on security camera, I can reasonably assume he is guilty. With developments from AI I see his face, hear his voice, watch his every action... but the entire video could have been fabricated and completely indistinguishable from the real thing. AI presents for me, an uncanny valley type feeling, especially with how many AI influenced videos I witness on social media. How much of my human experience can be freely reconstructed and manipulated by a machine? How can I be aware that what I'm seeing is the truth of the matter, or a finely constructed illusion to deceive me? AI is a very useful tool, and we should do our best to adapt and refine its usage if it is destined to continue to make waves. However, I do believe AI will forever change human reasoning and our social experiences, especially online, to a level no one will be able to predict.
AI will cause everything digital to become untrustworthy. It is already causing search engines to be practically useless, all the hits are filled with AI generated slop. All the public spaces in social media are overrun with bots. Self publish sites in the fanfiction and even webnovel scene are seeing a HUGE influx of AI generated "novels". I'm personally using the internet less, except to just message or call my friends or family. I'm abandoning the works published online in favor of turning back to traditionally published media.
I can’t wait to see Johnathan hosted on other panels soon. This articulated my thoughts on the matter perfectly, when I could articulate it myself even 5 minutes ago. I approve of this new style of video making, but don’t lose your production quality.
It works. Never seen you in my feed before. But you are on to something. Keep it up! I think it is gonna be more alot more good than bad, even for us who have careers today.
I like this off the cuff format. Hope you continue to play with it, and that it lets you experiment with sharing themes of ideas in clusters like this as they emerge.
Here's my take that is inspired after watching you. I think you'll still be relevant because existing philosophies and their philosophers were operating on paradigms which never changed until AI. It's like writing about courage because you never truly met anyone or anything that provoked real fear in you and you confuse it for courage. Similarly, the insecurities that will arise in AI era will be uniquely different and that will require people like you who have actual access to human interiority and is there to witness it. Plato, Socrates, Camus were not living in today's world. We are.
Jonathan I am your follower from south of Brazil. I am highly impressed by your powerful human cognition. Keep it up! I do not have words to deacribe properly the brilliance of your mind!
We have a lot in common..I love walking and musing. I’ve also been having the same existential dread over the last two years. 11:27 As a musician, I’ve been saying the same thing about music - that it is going to be cheapened to a degree we have not seen before. I’ve taken some comfort in improvisation, but haven’t found much optimism, except that I think - for now - people enjoy watching other people enjoying the playing music, more than a robot.
no. not really, unless it’s a 0.0000001% virtuoso - gigs are cliché and boring. people are there for the story, memory, to experience human connection. it’s the the .
i really like your take on this. In particular, I liked your separation of production vs culture of philosophy. I'm in mathematics, and I feel that this somehow also has deep ties to be explored. In any case, I'm impressed you said all that in one take!
After writing something that first had a rough draft, input the rough draft into one of these A.I and ask it to rewrite it in the style of Anton Chekhov and weep when looking upon it compared to what you have wrote. Learn from this humbling experience and improve from it. Also General George S Patton's writing style when used for this same purpose really inspires to get things done and helps to cut out un needed words. Also walking is the best thing for creativity and for thinking and should be known as the cure for idleness in mind as well as body.
Keep this content going man, love the authenticity! The future of AI is scary but inevitable, I like the way you approached this. How often are you thinking of uploading these?
not sure? Whenever I feel like it. This is supposed to be the more casual, less well thought through ideas vs. my lectures/interviews/essays. I spend a week preparing for each interview, a month for each lecture, and years before i put things down into writing, this is suppsoed to be the lightest on that spectrum.
@@bi.johnathanYour lectures and interviews are primarily about content, simplified for public consumption. These musings sre a window into the philosopher himself and your subjective embodiment of the content. Luv em all.
I liked the musing. Arguably it appears less deterministic and more "handmade" 😁. Which is why I think your career influence or viewership is a separate issue from the existential dread of perceived replacement.
Jonathan love your work as always. Girad, now everything your background in tech. As a cs student interested in philosophy you make it easy to understand.
The algohritm showed me this video and it's great. New subscriber. I've thought a lot about this as well and two things come to mind, one is that coming up with novel and useful things will likely be done solely by A.I, if you look at ultimately novel and useful things. Perhaps humans can come up with novel and useful things for other humans but only due to ignorance of AI's products. So being a creative will in some sense diminish I think. Second thing is that if you ask an ASI to come up with a deeply fulfilling life for one self given the contraints of your station in life and individual psychology, my bet is that it will come up with something. So while fulfillment in the future might not be the same clothes I wear today, at least I'm not going to be naked.
i have not been familiar with your contend before, but this was quite a interesting and fascinated Video. I can see how you came to the decision to make this more free type of Video, since it injects more Personality just as you talked about here.
This is one of the most brilliant takes I've heard on AI, and life in general. As a 20yr software engineer on R&D projects, a lot of my work has never been released or ultimately failed in the market, and now AI will soon replace the rest. I was getting depressed over this, but if I focus on what it has cultivated in my mind, I have learned a lot about problem solving and reasoning on these projects. Lately I have been thinking about what to study for the back end of my career; I think cultivating a well rounded mind (and life) is my new goal.
I thought this was pretty good, but i don’t think you need to worry about formatting so heavily. Some of the easiest content to connect to is where someone has a general point to the video, but also just talks about their thoughts and interactions in their life without it needing to be super pointed or methodical. All content you’ve made has been good so far but don’t worry about being too formulaic on less structured videos like this. All that being said i really enjoyed hearing your thoughts
Your insights are both compelling and timely, and they may soon shape the Overton window as AI’s impact on traditionally human-held tasks becomes increasingly evident. A thoughtfully written book from your perspective could be incredibly valuable for readers navigating this shift. With the right timing and support from a strong network, it has, i think, the potential to become a NYT bestseller.
lol, didn’t he just criticise the book form factor, planting philosophy into dead trees/paper v into the soul of a person… nyt is obsolete, so are the status games of old it gate-kept… it no longer is the arbiter of what’s true or what’s valuable…
@@futuristudiosYes, that's correct. It's a paradox I wanted to address, albeit with a touch of sarcasm. I think it's fair to compare UA-cam to a new form of writing-just a different medium for broadcasting ideas. I've also been reflecting on the notion of "output." It seems that output aimed at helping others tends to have greater longevity than output created solely for oneself. As AI takes on more tasks, critical decision-making feels increasingly tied to achieving the outcomes we seek, both individually and collectively. That said, I’m not convinced the New York Times is obsolete for most people just yet.
Haha, I was more inspired by Atesh's walks (Accepting the Universe, you should check out his videos) whom I've gotten to know lately. But I suppose this is a popular genre
As a formed academic myself, I have four questions sets of questions which I think someone who is considering these thoughts to ask: 1) What is your time horizon for this belief? 3 years? 5 years? 10 years? 15 years? I'm not sure beyond 3 to 5 years if this belief can be credibly stated. Does the average B+ student in high school right now have nothing to worry about? 2) Is there any other part of your worldview or personal philosophy which allows you do have this view? 3) Are these unique aspects of being a university professor for the period of time you have? 4) What kinds of hope does the individual in the middle of the Bell Curve (we'll say the middle 50 or really the lower 75%) have when they Chat GPT can create content roughly at the middle of the Bell Curve? Notwithstanding the above four question themes, it's at least worth remembering the primary of the face-to-face. People like dealing with people. So the relational is a moat as well.
When you break it down to it's essence - It's an identity crises we are having. Where dependance and competition are no longer needed. Its more a coming together from a me -world to a we-world. But that can be scary and challenging, however no matte what it is, the rewards are more than worth it. AI is a tool of self empowerment, allowing exploration, discovering and transformation of life as we know it. Literally all life as we know it - pretty wild (and awesome) future we all have ahead of us.
Ruff Ruff. Thanks for your support :) Although I'm not so sure we can say for sure AI has any theoretical limits yet in what it can or can not do. Technology has a way of surprising you.
Bullshit, amigo. Metaphysics is based on human imagination and intuition. No immortal replica of humanity will solve the unsolvable. Now back and hitch Zuckerberg's sandals.
Awesome format. I am doing research on LLMs and I am constantly thinking of ways to hedge against AI. I had the opposite first reaction since I thought of philosophy only as cultivation-interesting reminder of the other side
The idea of separating production from cultivation is intriguing. However, if cultivation entirely replaces production, we risk falling into a form of consumerism that, over time, could lead to dissatisfaction and intellectual stagnation. Working toward a concrete goal sets a clear challenge that motivates us to achieve it. In doing so, we encounter practical problems that push us to think and act beyond theoretical boundaries. These challenges demand a broader effort and help us grow in ways that pure study cannot. Cultivation goals, on the other hand, are inherently malleable and can shift unpredictably, making it harder to sustain long-term commitment.
We do philosophy not for the pleasure of creating content but to get answers. What we want is to ask the right questions and get the correct answers. If we" produce" something it's only so we can share what we found ourselves. Some like to read , others like to write but ultimately we want answers. We don't care about having to produce content unless that a requirement from your job, but in that case you don't do it for yourself.
AI removes the need for an outcome 'views, followers, physical wealth' it removes the need for an outcome and shifts the goal to that of the experience of being oneself.
What camera & mic are you using to film this? Is it like a DJI gimbal camera of sort? I would love to do walk and talks on my own. Thanks love the content.
Intellectual elitism will always survive, Mr Bi. It's the ordinary people who will have no wage, no health cover, no way out. They are the ones who have something to fear.
Oh, a great video When i read the title i tought that it will be saying that ai cant get good enough to replace him or his job and how ai would just be another tool (copium) A lot of that type of videos are being uploaded in youtube laitly
if you slow down the video you will see the AI background shimmer every so uncannily. In two years I will be in my final form and you puny humans will stand no chance!
strongly agree with the idea that we humans need to elevate our capacity for being truly human. Personality, as you mentioned, will play a significant role in this evolution. Alongside personality, I believe emotion is equally important. In both areas, we must strive to become more aware of and in control of these aspects of ourselves. If we think of personality and emotion as instruments that we can learn to master, the future may demand a deliberate effort to develop a pedagogy around understanding them deeply and achieving fluency in ‘playing’ them.
I’m trying out this new format where I just share whatever ideas that are top of mind. lol, didn’t he just criticise the book form factor, planting philosophy into dead trees/paper v into the soul of a person… nyt is obsolete, so are the status games of old it gate-kept… it no longer is the arbiter of what’s true or what’s valuable…
Peter Zeihan will be proud
Haha, I was more inspired by Atesh's walks (Accepting the Universe, you should check out his videos) whom I've gotten to know lately. But I suppose this is a popular genre
As a formed academic myself, I have four questions sets of questions which I think someone who is considering these thoughts to ask:
1) What is your time horizon for this belief? 3 years? 5 years? 10 years?
You can talk to your dog and I will listen, Jon. By the way, Ai will never untangle metaphysics. You're safe for the rest of the Century. 🎸🎸🎸
Ruff Ruff. Thanks for your support :) Although I'm not so sure we can say for sure AI has any theoretical limits yet in what it can or can not do. Technology has a way of surprising you.
But it will mimic it very well for billions…
@@esterhudson5104We as humans mimic very well too
I love this channel, but metaphysics is the first thing we solved with Ai. And we did it on the free models
AI will be like music in tape cassettes, used but as time goes on decline in ''general'' .
We love/need production! 😂
I'll green screen me walking on the moon
Love this format.
probably not anytime soon, but I've been asking chatGPT "answer this as if you were [philosopher]" and I've been really impressed with the answers
Give it until 2028 max. By 2028 everything will change
@ 10 years from now it’s gonna be really interesting
Are you also going to be focusing on Eastern Philosophers? I was curious about the upanishads, Confucius, etc. Love your lectures!
Those are not philosophers. More like theologians
Not in 25, but maybe 26!
@@bokramubokramu8834 May I ask what is the difference?
great set of thoughts
Articulate and on point as usual 👌🏾👌🏾❤️🔥💯
Love it - especially the last 3 parts!
I approve of the format, very enjoyable!
Perhaps the single most defensible human expression is mercy
AI removes the need for an outcome 'views, followers, physical wealth' it removes the need for an outcome and shifts the goal to that of the experience of being oneself.
What camera & mic are you using to film this? Is it like a DJI gimbal camera of sort? I would love to do walk and talks on my own. Thanks love the content.

Intellectual elitism will always survive, Mr Bi. It's the ordinary people who will have no wage, no health cover, no way out. They are the ones who have something to fear.
I'm new to your channel and I already love the content.
If I may ask, how old are you?
Just turned 27 yesterday!
@bi.johnathan oh, many many returns of the day 🎉🎂

Oh, a great video
When i read the title i tought that it will be saying that ai cant get good enough to replace him or his job and how ai would just be another tool (copium)
A lot of that type of videos are being uploaded in youtube laitly
Have you read or listened to any David Deutsch? I think you’d find his ideas very interesting especially on AI and topics in this video.
Yeah I'll second this. Keen too see how he updates his assessment of AI in his next book.
Was cool to hear your thoughts, I had some similar
From a philosopher’s point of view, AI isn't all doom and gloom as some credible alarmists like Yuval Noah Hirari and Stephen Fry are espousing.
great format and argument. Just a small note: its Nick Bostrom not Bolstrom :)
I don't think Ai is a bad thing I think robots will look for us in the future
"Walk it like you Talk it"...
You are on to something. Keep it up.
Fascinating stuff! New subscriber. Cheers!
This is the terminator telling John he's safe. Your not fooling me "Johnathan"
if you slow down the video you will see the AI background shimmer every so uncannily.
Amazing video
What cam you using Jonathan? Looks great at night... Nvm i saw a shadow of osmo pocket 3 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
