The fact that Zimmer and Nolan didn't win an Oscar for this film says it all. Hollywood is so badly out of touch when it comes to TRUE cinematic beauty
Interstellar in IMAX turned me to a jelly puddle in the theatre, salt of tears in dried layers across my face. So much about it cut right to my soul, and at a time in my life that this was all tender to me. The soundtrack was at least half the film.

Your analysis manages to parallel the beauty of this music, with your careful narration and vivid descriptions. I am in awe. Thank you so much.
Interstellar has been one of my favorite soundtracks since hearing it in the cinema in 2014, truly a masterpiece. Thank you for taking the time to dissect it and showing us just why it is so brilliant.

This was truly wonderful. And, as an organist, I was thrilled when I first saw/heard this monumental film, and its breath-taking organ score in a theater with all those big, wonderful speakers rumbling... almost overwhelming in its emotional impact. INTERSTELLAR is certainly one of the greatest sci-fi films ever made. And a huge part of its success is due to the flawless Zimmer score. Thank you for presenting this.

I think Zimmer’s brilliance is his simplicity. He writes music to serve the narrative, to develop characters and to draw the audiences in. I’m not saying that the icons of film composing like Jerry Goldsmith, John Williams and others are not skillful, but there’s just something about Zimmer’s music that elicits a unique impact.
The scene where Cooper re-docks with the Endurance is one of my favorite film scenes of all time. The entire fate of humanity boiled down to the efforts of a single man, refusing to yield against impossible odds, motivated by his love for his family. That’s the stuff of myth right there, and the music tells the story just as much as what’s happening visually. Such a fantastic movie.
Was waiting for this! In the Netherlands the cinema's will open first of june and they're showing Interstellar in IMAX. This is the perfect way to mentally prepare for such a movie.

Your description of this score is magical poetry. The score is perfectly entwined with the film, so much so that I always experienced it as part of the whole without focusing in on it. I have a new appreciation of it now. Thankyou.
In the last 3 minutes I couldn't keep it together and started crying like a baby... This movie is a masterpiece, and your story telling is absolutely incredible, because that's what it is, through your incredible passion for music. Hans Zimmer did the work of a genius on this movie, and the more you talked the more it made sense. Thank you.
Can't describe how much I love the "stay" theme! The fact that it begins simple and then slowly grows until the end, perfectly matchs the scene in the movie, it's a mix of feelings very well translated trough the music.
I remember when Interstellar came out it divided the audience and critics. But I'm glad that throughout the years it has been appreciated more and more.
I have watched interstellar over 20times now. As I'm writing this I went yesterday and seen it at Imax Sydney for the 10th anniversary. Believe me when I say that if you get a chance to see it the way Christopher Nolan intend us to see it. Please do.. This video breaking down the music in interstellar has earned you a subscription from me.. Absolutely presented beautifully
There are very few people that will understand the significance and the absolute brilliance of this sound track. This is the only sound track from start to finish that overwhelms me waves of chills and goosebumps. "No time for caution" on the docking scene has to be one of the most captivating and most emotional pieces of music that has ever been created. There is a moment in that piece that expresses an uncomprehending desperation for Cooper and Brand as well as humanity (at 2:35 of "No time for caution") itself. It brings tears to my eyes every time. Interstellar is one of my most favorite movies so far. This movie really makes me feel like there HAS to be something bigger than ourselves out there, somewhere, there JUST HAS TO BE. If ever there was a movie that creates hope for humanity on planet earth, then Interstellar is that movie.
14:40 is absolutely ethereal. How not only Zimmer, but you built up to that moment is beautiful. That moment in this video took my breath away, and put a lump in my throat.
Mesmerizing. The way you intertwine the story of the film with the music theory analysis and the underlying movie clips and audio. Brilliant. Just Brilliant. More please!
Interstellar is my favorite movie and the Cooper message scene is very personal for me. The Nolan / Zimmer collaboration has created something extraordinary and you did a great job at analyzing how.
THANK YOU SO MUCH! I've enjoyed this video so much, it almost made me cry twice. I didn't noticed that all the connections between the musical ideas Zimmer put on this movie were so connected! It has inspired me a lot. I'm a composer and currently I'm trying to put together a collection of orchestral songs, struggling with the cohesiveness of it all. So this video really helps me. Thank you, again. I hope your channel gets the views (and subscribers) it deserves.
What a great analysis, bravo 👏🏻🔥 I also like the tense music in the scene when Professor Brand dies and confesses the lies he told Murph when she was a child. That moment was the next important breaking point before the crew landed on Mann’s planet.
I never experienced any formal musical education and often struggle with the terminology, can't read notes etc, yet every word you said immediately made sense in my head. Fantastic analysis and work on your side! Hans Zimmer scores are hit and miss for me, but in Interstellar he definitely hit the nail on the head. His music carried a lot of the emotional weight of this film.
Im in tears. This analysis seduced my mind into feeling the score and themes of Interstellar like it was my first day at it. Im bewildered and happy beyond relief. i love this movie for the ammount of humanity it encompases.
It’s been over 2 years since you released this amazing analysis, and I keep coming back to rewatch. Such a great analysis of a masterpiece of a score and film.
Another fantastic video! From someone who knows almost no music theory, this video does such a good job of explaining how the score tells a story on its own, and makes the film even more of a masterpiece. It's a whole new view of Interstellar that I've never even thought about, a whole new language that I could enjoy before but only now I can truly appreciate it.
Hi Alex. That's very interesting to hear - I'm really pleased you're able to enjoy the video without knowing a huge amount about music theory. That is my aim!
I never fail to appreciate the fact such a masterpiece as S.T.A.Y started from a single sentence premise Nolan gave to Zimmer that hinted nothing at this being a sci-fi, just the relationship between a father and his child. Could you cover his Planet Earth 2 soundtrack? That was one of his OSTs that didn't sound samey, really stuck out.
The movie is amazing. The score was incredible (i’ve listened to portions if it since the movie came out over and over). Your analysis of how the score relates to the movie opens another dimension of enjoyment. Like others, I can’t believe you don’t have more subscribers, or why are you not producing this show for Netflix instead of UA-cam?
Interstellar is perhaps my favorite movie of all time, and I've long had an appreciation for Hans Zimmer's genius, but this video just increased and deepened that appreciation. Excellent job! Thank you so much for making this.
A good composer can make a good melody, but a great composer makes an experience. Great video by the way, this video was excellent quality you are definitely underrated. You got yourself a new sub.
I watched interstellar a few days ago and I love the way Hans Zimmer composed his pieces that gives a space feeling. This is a wonderful analysis and I'm glad I found this!!!! Thank you :D
The comparison of the music embodying the themes of: Beginning, Middle and End all at once made me shed a single tear. This movie is an emotional powerhouse and an underrated gem. Your videos of how some of the best composers like Howard Shore or Han Zimmer and John Williams take the essence of these films and intertwine them with music has been very entertaining and has deepened my love for those great films that really epitomize the artistry involved.
At 9:00, the music of Saturn (I refuse to think of it any other way) is perhaps my favourite part of the score - I've never hear any other composer finally crystallise the grandeur of the planet better. This is a great video, very much enjoyed.
I'm sorry I'm so late to the party on this... but my God! That is by far THE BEST FILM SCORE ESSAY EVER. I thought the score was one of the GOATs, but with your narration makes it somehow even better. transcendent! Bravo.
I am obsessed with this channel since finding it about a week ago. I love film and music in film despite not having studied music at all. I did laugh a little at 15:15 when you said "It lands as you'd expect on C Major" and me with no music theory knowledge was just like "yes of course, naturally C Major"
One of the best movie experiences I had was seeing this in theatres. Not a single person stirred when the credits started rolling until a few minutes in
Such an exquisite analysis. I did not notice any of this when watching the film. I will rewatch it and pay attention this time. Thanks for sharing your insights, and for showing us the hidden musical beauty of this movie. You earned a new subscriber!
This movie and its soundtrack were beyond its time. I couldn’t thank you enough for explaining this beautiful beast and help me reconnect with my emotion side.
Your note on the C lydian stuff finally resolving to a single note during that scene at the end of the movie was my favorite. I recently rewatched Interstellar and it stuck out to me. I tried to explain its significance to my non-musically inclined sister and Dad and I think they got the gist of why I thought it was neat.
I don't know if someone else already said it but when you say "taking us back to where it all began" we can hear the three famous notes of Also Spoke Zarathustra used in 2001: A Space Odyssey... where it all began. Great work.
Another great essay. You got me hooked from the ‘Harry Potter Prisoner of Azkaban’ video and now I feel like I have to check out the rest of your channel. May I suggest ‘The Da Vinci Code’ and ‘Angels and Demons’, ‘The Imitation Game’ for your next essay/project.
This score is so brilliant. I can listen to it in full and play the movie in my head it just fits so perfectly, truly the peak of movie soundtracks.
Just watched this today. I am in tears, for real. Very moving.
The Detach piece is beyond amazing, the bass sounds like Gargantua's heartbeat
Interstellar is perhaps my favorite movie of all time, and I've long had an appreciation for Hans Zimmer's genius, but this video just increased and deepened that appreciation. Excellent job! Thank you so much for making this.
A good composer can make a good melody, but a great composer makes an experience. Great video by the way, this video was excellent quality you are definitely underrated. You got yourself a new sub.
I totally relived the movie's most touching moments. Great video, thanx!!!
criminal how underrated this channel is. This might be the best youtube video ever made. I have revisited it countless times since its release
This should have 7 billion views. You truly SEE.
The music always makes me cry. I wish I could watch an orchestra perform the entire score.
I watched interstellar a few days ago and I love the way Hans Zimmer composed his pieces that gives a space feeling. This is a wonderful analysis and I'm glad I found this!!!! Thank you :D
Your talent is wasted on youtube! Both the analytical and design part are top-notch
This is by far one of the best content I have ever seen on UA-cam!!! 😮 Thank you so much, for your effort and work you put in your videos 🙏
At 9:00, the music of Saturn (I refuse to think of it any other way) is perhaps my favourite part of the score - I've never hear any other composer finally crystallise the grandeur of the planet better. This is a great video, very much enjoyed.
“Like the death of a star” is the absolutely perfect way to describe that piece, great video!
You've made me feel emotions I havent felt in a very, very long time. Thank you
WOW!!! This is one of those films where I remember the score more than the movie itself! Simply BRILLIANT!!
this is where I learned what the music of space sounds like: Haunting
I'm sorry I'm so late to the party on this... but my God! That is by far THE BEST FILM SCORE ESSAY EVER. I thought the score was one of the GOATs, but with your narration makes it somehow even better. transcendent! Bravo.
I am obsessed with this channel since finding it about a week ago. I love film and music in film despite not having studied music at all. I did laugh a little at 15:15 when you said "It lands as you'd expect on C Major" and me with no music theory knowledge was just like "yes of course, naturally C Major"
yep - I cried watching this video. I love this film and its score so, so much. thanks for your thoughtful analysis.
My pleasure!
I just got moved nearly to tears from a UA-cam music analysis video. Well done, sir. You've got a new fan for life.
Never seen a video with this many likes that doesn’t have one dislike. And it is VERY well-deserved.
I was really pleased when I worked that out and I'm glad your sister and Dad got the gist of it!
I would love to see your take and a fresh perspective on the tracks and score, especially on ‘The Da Vinci Code’ and ‘Angels and Demons’. Classic Hans Zimmer masterpieces but I feel that they are very underrated. Thanks.
All of this is going so far over my head but I love it
Amazing work im speechless.. This movie never fails to give me the chills and bring me to tears.
I can not express how amazing these videos are. Thanks a lot and keep making them 👍
Criminally underviewed and underrated.
