    As a former painter, I wanted the Oil Paint Filter in Photoshop to be incredible. As it stands, by itself, it is less than desirable. It looks like someone just threw a filter on a photo and called it a day. Some words come to mind, kitsch, contrived, automated, and crap.
    There are lots of great photo painting plugins on the market like Topaz Impression or Rebelle. These plugins use various algorithms for highlights and shadows to make the image look like a more natural painted photograph. So if you think like these programs, you can make the Photoshop filter work wonders.
    In a recent tutorial, Luminosity Masking versus Blend If, I showed you how to break your image into three distinct regions using two different approaches. The first approach was with Luminosity Masking, which is a very powerful approach to photo editing, but it makes a static selection. The second approach was using Blend If, which adapts its selection based on the underlying tones. After thinking about the second selection method and the Oil Paint filter, a little light bulb kicked on and I developed a unique technique for creating an oil painted effect in Photoshop.
    In today's tutorial, I will show you how to separate your image into three distinct regions using Blend If. We will then go into the Oil Paint filter and a create different settings for each region. This technique will simulate different brush strokes for the various regions of the photo. It yields a much more natural painted look.
    There is a lot going on in this tutorial. Try to follow along on an image of your own. If you are struggling, no worries, I created an Action for you that does all the work. Just be sure to install the appropriate Action for your version of Photoshop (CC or CS6).

    Fabulously useful technique, not only for the oil paint filter. I'm thinking of dozens of uses for this type of tonal/luminosity separation, control, and filtration. Thanks ^e6!

    You ask about my set up. Thanks a lot for responding so quickly I am impressed. My set up is CS 6 paid monthly to Adobe. I found that unlike you I hade to chose the picker to change the colour. You said that some may have to use the Liquefy but did not say how to use it. I have lost of landscape photographs and love looking at paintings and would love to give my photos a look of a painting. I have tried lots of effects but I have not been happy with any of them.

    Blake, I love this tutorial, I was wondering if you have ever done or could do a tutorial using this filter or some other filter to do a painting of a portrait or would it work the same as done here?

    • @f64Academy

      Thanks! It would work the same way really. You may need to blur some of the lines a bit more so the paint strokes don't look like wrinkles, though. :)

    I have not had any strong inclination to us Ps's Oil Paint filter, but I always appreciate your new applications for "Blend If" - Thank you!
    Question: Could you selectively apply the High Pass filter to three different zones in the same way as you demonstrated here, using "Blend If?"

    Great work. A long time ago I wanted to do something like that. But I gave up because I realized I just had no understanding of what the texture of an oil painting really looked like.
    Just as a suggestion, maybe you could do something like this for water color paintings.

    First off - Thanks for this video...
    In a previous video, you used a solid colour layer with a clipping layer to reveal the effect of "blend if".
    I'm curious to know, why in this video you chose a reveal layer within the "blend if" options box.... Thanks again... :)
    ps - I didn't know blend if had such an option...

      You are very welcome!There was a subscriber on UA-cam who once told me about the Color Overlay in the Layer Styles to preview Blend If. It is pure genius as you are already in the Layer Styles creating the Blend If settings.
      It just helps keep the layers palette clean and makes one less layer when you save it as a PSD or Tiff. Either way they both accomplish the same task. You are a very observant one!

    I have downloaded your action and followed the loading instructions you gave. I double clicked CS6 and it loaded in actions but would not work I got a circle with a line through. I then went to "load action" in the action menu and loaded it . I then had two oil Painting CS6 but neither will run. All the other actions that I have work. Do you think it is because the action needs to use Paint and it will not work in my CS6?

    Hello Blake, I took a closer look at your action. Can I ask why you chose to run the Oil Paint filter twice on each layer? I see that the High Pass layer is a smart object, why did you choose not to make the Oil Paint layers smart objects and instead run the filter twice? I enjoy your videos, thank you very much for posting these. Rick.

    • @f64Academy
      @f64Academy  7 років тому +1

      +Richard Adams running it twice on each layer makes it look more realistically painted. Running it once looks like an algorithm rather than a painters hand. It's not the best way to make a photo look like a painting, but it's good for PS.

    • @ReallyLuckyDog
      @ReallyLuckyDog 7 років тому +1

      Thank you, Blake. I'm going to have a look at how each pass of the Oil Paint can be combined into one or two smart objects. I like the flexibility of changing the Oil Paint parameters depending on the subject. Have a great day, Rick.

    • @f64Academy
      @f64Academy  7 років тому +1

      You could put a stop action on all of them too. Clicking the little box next to anything that says oil paint will make it stop for your parameters. I know people love them, but I am not a fan of Smart Objects. They weigh heavy on the image, especially when saving PSD files and I don't think they are really all that helpful unless you are editing video or making templates. Then Smart Objects are unbelievable.

    Following your tutorials and indeed the blend if option is powerful. For the painting effect: I found it looks great when on screen but there is no printer that really supports this so it won't look like a cheap fake of a real painting. I wish there was a printer that would allow following the brush strokes and allowing more ink or less (almost 3 dimensional), Until then it is quite useless don't you think?

    Apparently my video card isn't good enough to use the oil paint filter because it doesn't support Open CL. Is their am affordable video card, (between $80&$150) that supports Open CL that would let me use some of these more advanced tools in Photoshop that you would recommend?

      That action was created and tested in CS6. I am not sure why it will not work. However, earlier you stated you are using CS6 paid monthly ? CS6 is a one time purchase. Are you sure you are not running Photoshop CC? I say that because you have to use the correct Action or it will not work. As you stated, I pay monthly, so I am thinking you are on the CC plan, not CS6.

    For me, I fell this paint filter is an unrealistic effect. The filter can not make paint strokes in line with the subject, take a pole who would paint it across it, no you would make long strokes the length of it.
    I made a way to make it look more real by using the brush on a mask on layers below that have been modified something like a low pass filter, then with a brush for the more art ones painting on the mask you are putting colour on the image, so in effect you are painting as you would with real paint..
