I love your stream, a lot of helpful tips.
But can i ask, size of the canvas you usually using ? i ask because sometimes my Photoshop started to stuttering if i draw too many things in the canvas, i want to avoid that.
This one was about 12 inches square at 300 dpi. I usually work somewhere about there but environments can get a bit bigger (16x9 at 300 dpi). That seems to work well enough with my iMac without much lag

Thank you! As I recall I found a photo of an older man and then radically stretched and skewed features and then stylized more heavily as I sketched over it.

I wish you could zoom in to the piece and show us closeups. youtube compressed everything so much that it is hard to see the charcoal details.
Sorry about that! I wish the resolution had captured better. I'll try to do another one of these as a rerecorded video where I can better control that.
Does this method work with immediately using color, Im not sure how to use this method on other apps.
It definitely gets more complex with color. I usually only use this paper texture technique when keepings things grey. Most digital painting apps have some form of layer blending modes. I'm not sure if it will be named soft light, but I would put the paper texture on the top layer and try different blending modes until it looks approximately right
Are any of your rendering techniques possible in procreate ?
Yes definitely! I believe there is a blending mode similar to soft light in procreate that will give a similar effect. All of the brush work is definitely doable in any popular digital painting app.
@@fowlerillus Ah ok! I really wanna buy your courses but was just unsure if I could even “Do” them in procreate. So just to get this straight, you put down your silhouette, open another layer and start value painting? Do you set either of those layers on different blending modes? On procreate should I be setting the value layer to soft light?

Not sure if I'm following you but I think you're referring to painting from dark to light? I love doing that because it feels like I'm slowly turning the lights on :)
What brush do you usually use?
I most often use a standard round brush set to low flow and opacity. I build up tone by tapping repeatedly which gives a nice feel of control.
