I love that you got how sweet and cute the movie was. A lot of people just see the weirdness (which is definitely there) and miss how wholesome it is to embrace the weirdness.

I forgot how hilarious this movie was. I remember seeing it in the theater with my Grandpa. He thought it was the stupidest movie ever, but I loved it.

I love this movie. I know it's over the top, but being from the UK, I love seeing this cultural aspect. So cool
To me this movie is much more enjoyable than other more straightforward cringe/awkward comedies because it's so clearly infused with a ton of heart and warmth. I just love the stilted (in a good way) mood of the whole town and it's inhabitants. Kip steals every scene he's in, and there are a bunch of amazing side characters. Uncle Rico is hilarious - and his shirts are mint. Bona fide classic film for me. I think if you were among the "popular kids" back in the day you might not get this film, it's very much for the underdogs. I love it.

Filmed entirely in the writer/directors hometown of Preston Idaho. Yes it is set in the 90's but as a lot.of people in thebsmall town intermountain states will relate to things like technology trnds to be multi-decade.
I might be misunderstanding you, but the movie is set in 2004. It's on his school ID card. The reason for so many dated clothing/references is the way that rural and small towns lag behind the trends of major cities and the coasts. This doesn't make it bad but it's something that you see in a lot of small areas.
My wife and I love this movie and the joke most people don't get is that Idaho is way behind on the times like 10 years or more
