      I agree. There are sections of my yard that I like to cut myself (with my "throw away" mower). When my neighbor has helped me get my mess straightened out, I always warn him about the danger spots where huge rocks seem to mysteriously show up out of nowhere and hide in the grass.

    I used to help all my neighbors. Removing snow from their walks and driveways, mowing their lawns when they had problems. Never took a dime. Now that they have money, and I became disabled, what do I get from them. Calls to the township, because my lawn is to high, my antique truck, in my driveway. A guy I helped about 40 years ago, get his lawn business started, and never took a dime from him, heard about my plight. He showed up one day, mowed, weed wacked and blew everything clean. He comes every week, and won’t take a dime.

    When gas went up in price I automatically gave my yard guy more money. He didn't ask for it, but I welcome the help with my yard and to me it's worth every penny, plus working in the extreme heat here in Texas, I feel my yard guy should be compensated. It's not easy in triple degree temps.

    $40 is unheard of for the size of those yards with everything you are doing here in Ohio. You need to charge an overgrowth fee for customers who take advantage of not getting regular yard service letting their yards get higher than normal. I absolutely agree with you on the fee for the veteran. With the cost of gas and wear and tear you really need to increase your prices with every thing you do for them. Even if it's $10-$15. They shouldn't have any problem knowing the rise in cost of living if they have any integrity at all.

    • @mikedierker2381
      @mikedierker2381 Рік тому +10

      @@kennylavay8492 He could charge more and still do that, and he'd actually make some money that way. That overgrown lawn he does for no extra charge, I'd charge around $100 for that and here that would be considered reasonable. Then again, we're working in 105-110 degree temps all summer so we probably get to charge a little more because of that. Let's just say if I was charging the same rates he is, I'd be struggling to make ends meet. Just doing the math, if he charged $60 for all 9 of the lawns he planned to do that day, that's only $540 gross revenue! If his expenses were only $100/day that leaves $220 per person for an 8-10hr day, and that has to pay for new equipment, vehicles, and trailers when the time comes. I'm by no means trying to toot my own horn here because I just happen to live in an awesome city for a lawn biz, but I pay my foreman $242 for a 10hr day. I have 3 workers who do all the work while I run the business. Average gross is around $1500/day, net profit average this year so far is $586/day. We retain almost all customers until they move somewhere, and I turn down more business than I take because we stick to a tight service area and still get more business than we can handle. What I've found matters more than anything is your reputation. A lot of people are willing to pay a premium just to know they can trust you, you're reliable, and you'll cover anything you damage. In this industry you aren't selling the work, you're selling yourself. I will say that he's probably not doing what he does for the money and if that's OK with him, I think that's extremely generous and selfless. I just hope he's making enough one way or another to live comfortably because he certainly deserves that much.

And I did it for this price because it gave me a reason to get out the house and I did it in a reasonable time. Alot of people took advantage of my kindness and a few paid me more. I quit doing it due to a customer cussing me out because I didn't get the water spots off the window. I told him I did that free because I wanted to see if the new product would work and I told him before I started. I told him you don't pay me enough and this isn't my full-time job. I did it because I enjoyed it and you took the fun out of it. Please tell everyone in the condo complex, I quit because of you. So please make sure you are making enough. I'm pretty sure you have support from the channel but don't go broke. The first yard you showed $40 was a good size lawn and my opinion you should charge more.My full-time job was a chemical lawn care specialist and did it for 25 years and loved it until my first of 2 heart attacks,13 strokes and 4 ablations in a 10 year period. I just found your channel idk how your mama does it with the heat I sure couldn’t handle it but I’m in California we are extremely dry heat. Gas is also $4.90 a gallon rite now So $40.00 would be insane. I was quoted for just my backyard and it was over $500.00 and it was a bit bigger than the yard your doing here. I am a cosmetologist and I was self employed and always felt guilty raising my prices but if you think about it everyone raises their prices. You are with so much more than your charging.

      @@desireejames1538 I hear you on that one. Part of the trouble is that most people don't know which 'weeds' are edible. For instance Dandelions are very nutritional. The leaves you can use in a salad or stew and the root is like a small radish. Goats are great to keep the weeds and grass low, could you imagine how many goats we would need lol. Ages ago a farmer up north drove his cattle down to market and along the way the cattle ate all the tall grass on the side of the road. Fattening the cattle for free.

    I picked up a client that had a large back yard in a really nice neighborhood. The front yard was a decent size and on a hill. His previous company dropped him when they went to commercial only, and his rate had been stuck at $40 for years. I was having to double cut his yard, so I took him up to a modest $52.00 per week. He dropped me after two weeks, and said even though he loved the quality of the service he was going to have a family friend take over for less money. LOL, I said no problem, and good luck. :)

    For the home with the septic in front yard. Maybe a nice flower bed would help out. Because of the extra water in that area the flower bed would grow great and would not need to be watered much if at all. Cutting around a nice flower bed should not be as hard as having to mow that area at three different heights to make outcome look right. Just a thought.

We live on the side of a hill and it’s a real challenge because only about half the yard can be done with a mower and the other half needs to be done with the trimmer. We are now on our 3rd season with a guy that only charges $45 and hope he never retires.

    Keep up your electrolytes (as well as water) in this hot weather. Heat stroke can be very dangerous so take care.
    You will have to quote more if people don’t want (or cannot afford) to have their lawns cut more often, because you are going to have to do more than one pass and wear and tear on your equipment. I think most customers would understand that. If they are not happy they can always get quotes from elsewhere.

    If the belt was just replaced it was more than likely squeezed in between a idler pulley and a drive pulley. Damage is done on the inside and not noticeable on the outside. Had it happen to three belts one summer on a finish mower before I figured it out. In my defense I was getting it through the small gap with just my hands by rotating the pulley. Also wasn’t thinking about the stress I was causing to the belt. 120 dollar lesson to not be lazy.

    The price should be based on lot size, how much you have to move to do it, if they are on a regular schedule, and how much grief the client gives. If they ever not pay in a timely fashion they should be removed as a client or given a “unknown your a piece of crap $20 fee” for being trifling. Every customer isn’t a joy to work with, don’t feel bad about the $20 piece of crap fee. Remember they can always find someone else if they don’t like your price hike. My exhusband was a paint contractor and he added a “I knew you were going to be trouble fee”. He would add that to his quote and hope they got lower quotes they went with. If he did get stuck with them he had an incentive to take the job even though he knew they would be a Karen.

    Make sure she eats! I am a woman who tends to not eat when it is hot and have had the same thing happen. When you are doing physical labour like this, protein, carbs and adequate hydration are essential even if you feel it is too hot. I think you should be charging additional if the customer is stretching it out on mowing. I do my own lawn but when I was getting it done, I paid $60 per mow every week. Now I have my own mower and do it myself but agree with those saying higher the grass, higher the price. Your equipment gets hit harder on those jobs and it also takes more fuel and time because the grass is long.
