I first heard it and loved it immediately back in 2008. Still gives me goosebumps even after 16 years. That's a legacy for M83. And a part of me too. Such an amazing track.
M83, My brother died yesterday. This song is from one of his favorite albums. He would always leave a CD copy of Saturdays=Youth in the car. Thank you for making music that my brother enjoyed.
Losing a loved one is the hardest pain a human goes through, even harder than one's own death. Just take it one day at a time and be near people as much as you can. Everybody dies, it's just about learning to hold onto the person in a way that makes them close, but healthy enough to move on with your life.
First heard this album when I was in Hong Kong and listened to it non stop, and it rained the whole time, so now the smell of rain and all those buildings dwarfing me on this small congested area with this large sounding music will always be linked.

Sorry to break this to everybody ideals, no matter how much you want this to be about love, it's about a drug experience. Taken from M83's own website- Best of all is "Kim and Jessie", the first proper M83 pop song. "The lyrics are about two teenage girls having a drug experience."

I was high and drunk listening to this and thinking about how others thought about me in a positive way, I have always been the one to be skeptic of what others thought of me in a negative way but never the positive, for some reason this song brought up that emotion through it's melody.
You should hear The Chain Gang of 1974! If you like this kind of stuff, give a listen to Cut Copy, Miami Horror, Bag Raiders, Capital Cities, Jukebox the Ghost, and Shy Child (newer stuff), if you haven't already. =)
I agree with MrJeanSarkozy. First 3 albums were the best. They're the essence of M83 before it went full-on lyrical and mainstream. It was all about experiencing the music.
the video is NOT about lesbians not fitting in. it's about a loss of youth and coming of age. the two girls are happy together in the beginning because of youth, there isn't love or sexual attraction involved in it yet. they are just living a carefree life of rollerskating and friendship, and enjoying it. the girls in yellow are ironic because the colour yellow represents life and happiness, but they aren't happy, they're grown up and are now part of a routine, this is signified by their professionalism in skating that kim and jesse don't yet have. the underlying fear of growing up is shown during the routine when "life" (girls with umbrellas start to somewhat taunt them and circle them. the scene where the girls roll under them is the start to their 'growing up' moment; they are becoming part of the yellow girls routine. it is the start of their coming of age and they like being apart of it. this followed by them going out into the world to to finish growing up. the ending kiss still doesn't EXACTLY signify sexual attraction. it signifies the last step of growing up, romantic love. the reason for the underlying "sexual" tones was actually part of it too however. in an interview it is said that the tones are their 'because you build up this idea of thinking you know what it's about, you think it's two lesbians who are falling in love.' this is used as an example of the song and the video and their true meaning using the viewer watching: a child wont watch this video and think the same thing as an adult would. they would see two girls having fun; while an adult could perceive it as sexual tension between the two. it's truly a beautiful piece on youth and growing up.
I would rather say, that the "transition" under the legs of yellow pro-roller skaters is allegory for the way children learn about sex and other fun things grown-ups do: they get this information from older teenagers/young adults. It is too simple and unappealing for 'growing up'. Besides, they are already quite grown up and they just need that last push, such as information what you can do with your body in order to decide to finally grow up. In my opinion that scene with rolling under the legs is simple talk and brag of older girls what have they done with their boyfriends...
There are many theories to what this song and video represents. IMO, see it the way your heart sees it. That is the beauty of art and music. Whatever brings you happiness and peace.

the video is NOT about lesbians not fitting in. it's about a loss of youth and coming of age. the two girls are happy together in the beginning because of youth, there isn't love or sexual attraction involved in it yet. they are just living a carefree life of rollerskating and friendship, and enjoying it. the girls in yellow are ironic because the colour yellow represents life and happiness, but they aren't happy, they're grown up and are now part of a routine, this is signified by their professionalism in skating that kim and jesse don't yet have. the underlying fear of growing up is shown during the routine when "life" (girls with umbrellas start to somewhat taunt them and circle them. the scene where the girls roll under them is the start to their 'growing up' moment; they are becoming part of the yellow girls routine. it is the start of their coming of age and they like being apart of it. this followed by them going out into the world to to finish growing up. the ending kiss still doesn't EXACTLY signify sexual attraction. it signifies the last step of growing up, romantic love. the reason for the underlying "sexual" tones was actually part of it too however. in an interview it is said that the tones are their 'because you build up this idea of thinking you know what it's about, you think it's two lesbians who are falling in love.' this is used as an example of the song and the video and their true meaning using the viewer watching: a child wont watch this video and think the same thing as an adult would. they would see two girls having fun; while an adult could perceive it as sexual tension between the two. it's truly a beautiful piece on youth and growing up.
This actually makes sense. I've watched this video several times and I never though of it this way... Amazing indeed
