Reynaldo Figueroa I'm not denying that, but it gets me very angry when people say he was never good. He wasn't born with any natural talent, he had to work hard to play this well. When I listen to Disposable Heroes, the drumming is the work of a true genius. There is no doubt his skills have definitely diminished and his live playing has never been that good but this is the work of a hard working drummer and he deserves respect.
I think that he has his own way of groove, very different and the same moment very close to Bonzo. Complicated to explain, it kind of attitude and pressure he put and his ignoring of metronome. He purpose don't cares to be clean, he cares about energy and pulsating as his main goal.
Jealousy is not automatically the basis for critique. You don't have to be a chef to know what shit food is. Yet there are so many here that think you have to be a drummer to know what you are talking about, most of you who say stuff like "prove it otherwise shutup!" are probably not drummers either. The drumming to Battery is awesome and it fits the song perfectly, but it doesn't require any special amount of stamina (none with good technique) and it doesn't require cocaine! I'm a death metal drummer and this is basic metal drumming that any metal drummer with enough practice can achieve within a pretty short amount of time. Btw, I love Lars and he's the sole reason I got into drumming in the first place. Stuff like Gavin Harrison tends to play, that's hard!
Lars is a legend. He helped create a whole new sub-genre in the metal scene through Metallica. People who criticise and try to discredit the importance of his impact within Heavy Metal are ignorant and stupid.
I’m not on the “Lars sucks” bandwagon and would never be. Metallica wouldn’t and couldn’t exist without him. But at this point in time, he was on his way to becoming a really, really solid metal drummer. You look at footage from the puppets tour and he was DESTROYING it every night. It was only after the Bob Rock influence started that he dialed it back and started laying down a lot of backbeats. I’m convinced that’s a big part of the reason that this side of his playing started to suffer as the 90s progressed. If you don’t practice and develop this stuff, you can lose your consistency pretty easily...as any musician knows.
Played out 16" Remo FIberskyn 3 from 1990 close micd with an RE20 or a Letterman Mic. Urie Monitors Record to 2" tape and parametric the mids out boost the bass frequencies.
@@ChristianIce No, they are not - you can see video of Lars and also Dave Lombardo doing beats like that with one pedal. Back in the 80's, most good thrash metal drummers did fast double hits like that by skipping the pedal Bonham-style, because that's how old school hardcore punk drummers did it, and thrash came from punk. I was a drummer who grew up and learned in the 80's playing those styles of music, so don't give me your bullshit, kid - just listen and learn.
@@ChristianIce And a roll is different than a beat. Good drummers only use double bass for beats or fills that they can't do with a single bass. Most of Battery can be played on single bass except for the continual 16th note bass drum pattern after the solo. The same with Angel Of Death and many other 80's thrash (i.e. REAL thrash) songs - the main fast beats were done on single bass and double bass was only used when necessary.
@@hinjurock70 Yeah, you can see it in the video, he uses two kicks, and there's nothing wrong with that. I don't know where you got those "rules", but I assure you, nobody cares, everybody plays in the more convenient way. Some drummers use the bounce technique, but it produces a different effect, the hits are uneven in strength (on purpose, to give an increasing dynamic) and those drummers usually play with a single bass drum. Lars couldn't do it even if wanted to, he never had a good technique.
@@ChristianIce You're completely wrong and apparently not only haven't watched Lars play very often, but you haven't even listened closely, because he skips the pedal all the time.

Why is the bass drum on the left of the speaker and not on both!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? This makes so mad on Slayers- War Ensemble they to the same thing with the double bass drums. Can anybody tell me why they pan the bass drum to the left.
Because, left ear good for bass sounds and right ear good for treble sounds.I do not know why left ear good for bass probably relationship brain things what ever. So that is why write L,R on every headphone
***** The reason for that is because if you listen to the record in front of two speakers of your standard hi-fi home system or car audio, you have the impression of standing in front of the band live. It is panned this way simply to make you feel like you were standing in front of them, I mean in front of Metallica or any other band playing. This way you will hear Lars' bass drums like you were standing in front of him - his right bass drum is the left one from your perspective, and his left one is to the right from your perspective. His hi-hat is panned to the right channel also, well, not in this song particularly, beceuse he plays here mainly his second hi-hat which is to the right of him in his kit, so you would see it on your left side as you stand in front of drums, so particularly here you hear it more in the left channel). As well as all of his drums and cymbals. It's the same as with the guitars - James tracks are in the left channel with a little in the right one, Kirk's rhythm tracks are in the right channel. Actually they always play this way live, so that Kirk is seen on our right, right? And James' amps and speakers are on the right side of the stage, our left side, you know. It is done to simply make the record sound as live as possible. Every band is recorded this way, Slayer too :) I haven't heard for it was panned panoramically that way because left ear is better for bass, I don't know everything though ;)
That is the closest we got to that sound and it was just me and my drumming friends from the Timpview Drum Line after I graduated that summer haning at Sam Fosters studio: Audio VIsion after he gave us a key to his studio after my high school rock band Slinky Fink recorded there from winning a session by being the best rock band in the school. We found this funk bassist and then this singer wasinto the CHilli Peppers rap style.

JoshLikeCrazy yeah you're right , he worked hard during his youth to be a decent drum player , and back in the day he was awesome. Now he sucks. Lol
Reynaldo Figueroa i don't know.... have you watched through the never? that looked like some pretty good drumming to me
zac chinevere nothing last forever..... bro.... i can´t run like before so now i just jog.... o well....
I think that he has his own way of groove, very different and the same moment very close to Bonzo. Complicated to explain, it kind of attitude and pressure he put and his ignoring of metronome. He purpose don't cares to be clean, he cares about energy and pulsating as his main goal.
playing air drums to this as a guitar player XD
4:10 play that at 1.75x speed dave lombardo just appeared on the drum track
Aahhh when Lars was actually good and practiced ..
I feel like the mars-fuhrer again playing with guitar. So powerful ! ! !
Lars is a legend. He helped create a whole new sub-genre in the metal scene through Metallica. People who criticise and try to discredit the importance of his impact within Heavy Metal are ignorant and stupid.
0:26 The real beginning.
Lars. The only drumer that ACTUALLY USES THE FUCKING TOMS
Holy Shit!!! Play on baby your still always the best!! 😘😘
And all the basement haters in who have played in front of 4 people........
You can say what you want about his drumming, but its a trademark, that you can recognize every Track by him playin drums!
Black Beauty snare. Sounds awesome.

Back when thrash drummers did fast double hits like the ones in this beat with one pedal (Bonham-style) instead of cheating by using double bass.
Those double hits are with 2 pedals.
How is that "cheating" anyway?
Is a snare roll with two hands also cheating? :D
@@ChristianIce
No, they are not - you can see video of Lars and also Dave Lombardo doing beats like that with one pedal.
@@ChristianIce
And a roll is different than a beat.
@@hinjurock70
Yeah, you can see it in the video, he uses two kicks, and there's nothing wrong with that.
@@ChristianIce
You're completely wrong and apparently not only haven't watched Lars play very often, but you haven't even listened closely, because he skips the pedal all the time.
1:23 ¡Battery!
This is actually better then Angel of death.
Angel of death has harder fills while here the fills are mostly based on the snare
Lashing out the action
Returning a reaction
Weak are ripped and torn away
Hypnotizing power
Crushing all that cower
Battery is here to stay
Smashing through the boundaries
Lunacy has found me
Cannot stop the battery
Pounding out aggression
Turns into obsession
Cannot kill the battery
Cannot kill the family
Battery is found in me
Battery
Battery
Crushing all deceivers
Mashing non-believers
Never ending potency
Hungry violence seeker
Feeding off the weaker
Breeding on insanity
Smashing through the boundaries
Lunacy has found me
Cannot stop the battery
Pounding out aggression
Turns into obsession
Cannot kill the battery
Cannot kill the family
Battery is found in me
Battery
Battery
Circle of destruction
Hammer comes crushing
Powerhouse of energy
Whipping up a fury
Dominating flurry
We create the battery
Smashing through the boundaries
Lunacy has found me
Cannot stop the battery
Pounding out aggression
Turns into obsession
Cannot kill the battery
Cannot kill the family

Me : listening to this song
My headset: battery low
i love how the toms sound
Why is the bass drum on the left of the speaker and not on both!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? This makes so mad on Slayers- War Ensemble they to the same thing with the double bass drums. Can anybody tell me why they pan the bass drum to the left.
this is a fucking good question!
Because, left ear good for bass sounds and right ear good for treble sounds.I do not know why left ear good for bass probably relationship brain things what ever. So that is why write L,R on every headphone
*****
The reason for that is because if you listen to the record in front of two speakers of your standard hi-fi home system or car audio, you have the impression of standing in front of the band live. Every band is recorded this way, Slayer too :) I haven't heard for it was panned panoramically that way because left ear is better for bass, I don't know everything though ;)
that is a good answer :) thank you
In the Southern Hemisphere they pan it the opposite direction.
Fucking awesome! Verdensklasse, Lars!
why is the kick drum panned so far to the left?
3:11 lars slowly morphing into lombardo
Parece un tema tocado por Dave Lombardo
That is the closest we got to that sound and it was just me and my drumming friends from the Timpview Drum Line after I graduated that summer haning at Sam Fosters studio: Audio VIsion after he gave us a key to his studio after my high school rock band Slinky Fink recorded there from winning a session by being the best rock band in the school. We found this funk bassist and then this singer wasinto the CHilli Peppers rap style.

Just hearing this makes me sweaty
why is the kick panned so far to the left
Yeah I noticed that too
I swear, you will never find a better drumer, ever!.
Neil Peart.
Please tell me you're joking. You can't possibly be this ignorant and clueless.
lol...wow..he's good but of course this is from when actually cared about being a drummer so yes, this is good.
Jesus..
TwoHeavyThrash
Yeah, he's a pretty good drummer too.
I don't know this Lars guy very well but I think you guys are giving him so much shit on his drumming. This is FUCKING AWESOME! #wanna
Those people are mostly complaining about his present-day sloppy and somewhat lazy style. He had much more passion for drumming during the first half of the 80s, but some people think that it's hip to rip on Lars and pretend like he is "the worst drummer EV4R!!1", because they need to hate something.
The best
great! thanks!
put it on x1.25 it will be the 89 Seattle live version
Heck yeah 🤘
i just cannot figure this riff out for the life of me lol
Make sure to subscribe and share!
His playing is comparable to Dave Lombardo here. This is good. Lars is still a decent drummer.
Lars technically WAS better than Lombardo. Lombardo was just faster.
@@nickstalker3254 what? Dude what type of drugs are you on?
@@jimboy6414 Good ones, obviously.
@@trulyunoriginal he said "was" Dave surpassed him eventually, and out of the Big Four he is by everyone's admission the best of the bunch
Mic 1'4 inch away from head. Strike head with a VIc Firth 5B and play double bass patterns to tape. Playback and EQ.
Young lars,,,
Do a full"...and justice for all" album, BASS ONLY vid
Enjoy the silence..
Danish badass LARS!!! ahhh 🤘🤘🤘
The audio cut off on the cymbal crash.... Then it came on again! Hhhhmmmmm Im not sure why......(;
It's just me or the kick is not to the center ? you hear that it is panned left

Give me your war face Lars!!!!!! He is the god of rock!!
Fuck me those toms in the intro sound colossal isolated! 🤘
Why such quiet bass drum
+MegaMouldyBanana its on the left channel
+Infinity Yeah, but why is it mixed so quietly in the final mix i feel like it should be more prominent
MegaMouldyBanana that i dont know
Do you have broken speakers?
Most 80s trash metal bands tend to have quiet bass drums
No drum just have a friend hold the drum head by the collar with one hand on the metal area pushing back with the wrist as it strikes.
The auditory equivalent of a Jackson Pollock painting 🔥🔥🔥
