Surface Iron Fishing - Island Yellowtails

  • We headed south in search of Yellowtail near the Coronado Islands. We found fish scattered in many different locations. We landed a number of Yellowtail, Bonita, Calico Bass and Barracuda all on the surface irons. Really fun day of fishing.
    My surface iron rod has seen better days. It barely held on during the trip. I'll be searching for a new rod.

    I’m a deckhand on boat out of Cisco’s. I fish multiple jig sticks. My go to all time favorite jigstick is my cut 540 3” off the tip to make tip size a 10 and 3” off the butt. Also, I have seeker Pinhead 93h(great big jig rod baby 5x and 5x also 7x) calstar 90j(second favorite jigstick for jigs from 45 to 7x or similar) calstar 100j(lighterjigs from 7x jr to 45) cut 100j 3” off the tip(45-7x) cui f-120 cut down to size 14 tip and is over all 9’6” great all around jigstick for all size jigs. Then old conolon Garcia 9’6” Sabre 540 uncut(2 of them) and 2 more seeker 540s one cut down to size 12 tip and one to size 14 those r my tuna jigsticks for poppers

    You seem to prefer thorium’s as your primary reel. Have you ever experienced slippage with them. I plan to add to a Phenix axis 909hj as a yt and foamer reel. Could the torium handle slightly bigger grade say 80-100 bft? I would spool it with silk ocean pe4 which I would get abt 450 yards of 83 pound.

    • @WARBAITS
      @WARBAITS  6 місяців тому

      Torium is a less expensive version of the Trinidad. I have a lot of set ups to cover so I use the Torium. If I only needed one reel, I’d get a Trinidad. I fish the 20 but you may consider the 30 Or even a 2 speed if you’re targeting bigger BFT. I suggest talking with your local tackle shop and holding the reel or even mounting it to the rod. The rod you picked is perfect. I’ve had one and enjoyed it.

    90J Mag or a GUSA 900 Monster. Seekers aren’t the same anymore, just don’t load up right or fish as heavy as the older blanks do.

      Do they still make the GSUA?

      @@WARBAITS Yeah, RUS 90 Monster loads and fishes really nicely, almost feels a bit Harnell 552 or 553 with the faster action of graphite.

    Afran, Cal Star should warranty this. I think you'll have to pay like $35 and come up to Gardena tho. They'll probably match the wrap too. Call them bro.

    Always odd to me, to see someone cast, then switch hands---rather than just using a reel with the handle on the other side, so they do not have to change hands. No big deal, just saying.

    • @jessemccoy1661
      @jessemccoy1661 4 роки тому +6

      Because that's how it's done. You maintain your strong hand for both casting and cranking. Just because you don't understand it, doesn't mean it's wrong.

      The monster is nice for the lighter jigs and the Delmar is nice for the heaver surface irons. The CE has a lighter tip and the US line had a more stouter tip. Call up Randy at United Composites he will answer any questions. He's a super nice dude I picked his brain for awhile before having my rod wrapped. I have the same name on BD if you have any questions
