      FBI agents don't see real action too often so they honestly just didn't know from lack of experience. And they probably thought they could beat them with sheer number of agents, but half of the agents fumbled under pressure. One dropped his gun in the car crash and couldnt find it. Another lost his glasses and couldnt see. Another 3 agents were hit in their gun or hand and couldn't reload. One by one Platt took them out of the fight.

      Many years ago I was in an FBI firearms instructor class and the guy teaching it was an FBI agent and his name was Mike A. At that time I had been a SWAT operator for several years and was calling into question many of the tactics that were used by the FBI during this operation. When the class took a break I went up to him and could tell he had gotten a little emotional about the conversation, and I said jokingly hey I didn’t mean to get on the Home team but some of the stuff just doesn’t make sense. That’s when he told me that he was part of the other team that was working the other end of S. Dixie Highway that day. He went into great detail about the operation and how well he knew Ben Grogan having just run with him a couple nights before. Grogan was almost legally blind without his glasses and when he lost those that’s where things really went bad. Grogan was one of the early members of the FBIHRT unit and was a very good marksman. Without his glasses he could barely see.
      I attended the FBI national Academy many years later and actually studied the case file for this incident it’s very interesting what all took place and how much time and effort they have dedicated to never making this mistake again.

    Great episode. If I saw this in a movie I wouldn't believe it.
    Glad the FBI learned from this, but regardless, they were up against some really hardened criminals. Both had successful military backgrounds and clearly had no fear of death. They were not going to let the FBI take them alive and combined took about 18 shots when it was said and done. As to why they decided to go down such a heinous path in life? Who knows, that is one of the tragedies of this all.
    Kudos, obviously, to all the agents. Mireles is a different breed ending the gunfight with his left arm alone. Probably saved a few more agents lives with his heroic actions.
    Also want to give praise (even though they will never read this) to 1) The witness that managed to follow the suspects to their residence/hideout after their second murder of a Brinks truck driver. Personally speaking, I would have bolted as soon as I saw the first shot, and then once I reached safety, just called the police. Very courageous act for him, which set the wheels in motion for the FBI.
    Finally, that victim at the shooting range that got his car hijacked gets full commendation as well. What a insane amount of resilience to walk 3 miles after getting shot 3 times. He also allowed to give the FBI more leads on these guys and what they looked like. Hope that man has lived a great life since then.

      Yeah, this was dreadful on the part of the FBI. Since when do you come abreast of a car holding two desperadoes and try to talk them down? No, you surround them and gun them down. Cops seem to learn that it's best somehow to try to talk a hardened criminal down, and often end up getting killed or seriously wounded. What the hell, man! In the days of Dillinger that didn't happen.

    • @beenaplumber8379
      @beenaplumber8379 4 роки тому +22

      Revolvers were the standard sidearms for everyone in the day. They never jammed. They fire as quickly as semi-automatics, and they had quick-reload cartridges that would allow you to reload in 5 seconds. (I'm not sure these agents had those though.) But they were a lot less accurate during repeated firing because of the trigger-driven cocking mechanism. Just consider how many shots the agents fired at close range and how few rounds actually hit the bad guys.
      BTW, 3 agents out of the 8 involved had semi-automatic 9mm pistols, and 2 had shotguns, though one shotgun was never used because it was stowed in Manauzzi's car, which was alongside the Monte Carlo. Manauzzi wound up unarmed during the entire firefight after he took out his revolver and set it on the passenger seat. The collision with the black Monte Carlo sent his revolver flying.

      @@beenaplumber8379 For sure, I'm a pretty big gun guy myself, so I get the benefits of a revolver but man... going up against people with semi auto RIFLES with a couple of revolvers and some 9mm's is crazy IMO. The shotguns were good but if they just had a couple of rifles too I think it would have been a different outcome.

    • @beenaplumber8379
      @beenaplumber8379 4 роки тому +5

      @@ejcheli I'm not a gun guy myself, but I worked security for a while, and I carried a company-issued revolver. At the range, the S&W .38 specials were useless, to me anyway, under repeated firing. (I was nowhere near as experienced as these agents, obviously.) The short colt .38's were even worse, even on the first cocked shot. I've had a few days at the range with my brother and his Glock .45 semi-auto (I don't own any guns myself, but I've always enjoyed target shooting), and I swear that thing was nearly as accurate as a rifle on every shot. My other brother has a .44 magnum revolver that I want to try out. He says the long barrel makes it more stable and really accurate. He says he actually uses it for deer hunting on close shots.
      I do appreciate the difference the right weapon can make in a shootout like this. And I agree, semi-automatic rifles with big mags would have been invaluable to the agents. Even if they'd had access to both shotguns, they only had 9 rounds each, though they sure could have used that kind of takedown power on Platt. Like the agent said, Platt was shot to pieces (broken bones, severe wounds in both legs and a forearm, and over a liter of blood where one of his lungs was supposed to be) but he wouldn't go down. They say his tox screen was 100% clean too. Same with Matix.
      (Edit) @ejcheli, if you read this and reply, I would like your opinion on the effectiveness of the agents using 45 Glock semi autos like my brother's vs. semi auto rifles. As I said, the Glock 45 is of comparable accuracy (IMO), certainly at closer range, but they have tremendous stopping/takedown power. More than the .223 rounds? I dunno. I suppose the 45's would have fewer rounds per magazine too, but they change just as quickly. What do you think? Would there be a benefit of more rifles over bigger and better semi auto handguns?

      Ben Grogan trained for this his whole life. But he lost his glasses in the collision and couldn't see without them, thus making his shots less accurate. Jerry Dove took a round to the 9mm Smith pistol, and it didn't work anymore. He had no backup, and took a close range 223 round to the head from Platt. Other revolvers were ok, but they could have had vests as well as MP5 subguns and M16s, as they were in their armory, but didn't really expect to find the black Monte Carlo, and weren't fully prepared. Too bad. SW 82nd Avenue in Pinecrest, behind the plaza, has a sign marking the events of that day, and Grogan and Dove are commemorated.
