So I had a friend that was a few years older than me. She loved Tori in the 90’s and I hadn’t heard of her yet. We lived in different states and I heard that Tori was doing an interview on the local radio station where I lived so I recorded it for my friend. I fell in love with Tori’s speaking voice first and how she carried herself and that was the start of my fascination.
Her piano skills her beautiful voice her lyrics her videos her music helped me with morbid loneliness and the pain that I was feeling I was only 22 years old . wow I am fifty tree now.
She is so captivating. I feel like she could have been a star or entertainer of some sort even if stripped of her musical/piano talents. I love how relaxed she is during this interview. 🌺🦋❤️
“So I don’t think I’ll ever have anything to write about again” and she makes 15 more albums 😅 love her and this interview! Thank you for this, I was born January 5th 1992, one day before Little Earthquake’s release!
She was born and raised in NC. I found that kind of interesting and surprising. This is first time I'm actually hearing her speaking voice after years of only having listened to her music, and not knowing anything about her background. I don't even hear a trace of a southern accent, and just the styling of her music, the genre, is not something I would expect to come out of the south, and that's what's so cool and interesting about her. When I first heard Little Earthquakes, I thought maybe she is British or from some other European country, or maybe from NYC, or maybe Canada, or L.A. or some place like that. It's a pleasant surprise to find out that some more avant-garde and edgey type pop/rock music has come out of the south. I thought it was funny him trying to sell her on Carsons ribs when she is from NC, one of the best places in the country for barbecue. I am from Chicago and have had Carson's ribs and have spent a good amount of time in NC, and Carson's is no comparison to good NC barbecue.
She wasn't really raises in North Carolina, not exactly. She was born there but moved to Silver Spring, Maryland when she was admitted to the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore at age five. From then on, she grew up in Maryland just outside of Washington, which is why she played at a gay club in Georgetown at age 12, and hotels around Capitol Hill until she moved to L.A. She did visit her grandparents in North Carolina for extended periods. I do hear southern influence in her music, especially in some songs on Boys for Pele and Scarlet's Walk. The DC-area influence is present throughout a fair amount of her music. It's worth noting, too, that besides regional cultural influences, her mother's side of the family belong to the Eastern Cherokee tribe of North Carolina, and that, by way of her grandfather in particular, has a strong influence on her music and her worldview. She was always torn up in the press for being kooky because of her animist worldview and some of the allusions she makes, and it has only occurred to me over the past decade or so how bigoted the interpretation of her as mentally off is. She sees the world and experiences life with influence from an American Indian cultural perspective and any of those notions, which she expresses freely, always have been mocked to describe her as crazy.
She just explained exactly why Letterman loves her. Watch her performances on his show-he has a special love for her. It’s because she talked to him like a real person and showed interest in him as a person. She is the kind of person who makes everyone feel special.
Oh my gosh that was brilliant! Thank you for sharing that. Wild to think it was 1990. That was the year I was born 😱! I’ve been doing a deep dive since 2020 into Tori’s music and everything in between. Her and I have a very similar story regarding our intro into music. Began playing and composing VERY young. Was called to the piano by the muses around 2-3 years of age. (Musical expression is quite literally, everything. It’s the only way I can express myself, or express certain complex emotions regarding life/the world/the universe in general or, as I see and understand it) Played in church, sang in the choir until I began to feel disconnected and isolated due to certain character traits.. left the church around 15, played in bars and galleries, had a band (or 3) that didn’t make it etc. I WAS a female artist. I transitioned at 22 from female to male. So I understand those difficulties and the people who create said difficulties. Things went in a slightly different direction for me. I’m not in the public eye right now, and am fighting my own battles to get to where I need to be musically. I’ve actually been wanting to write to her for sometime. But I don’t want to do so without a finished piece of work to share along with the letter. Absolutely adore her. It’s nice to be able to relate to someone, and have the privilege of being able to enjoy what they do. Loved the interaction between these two 😄 Take care! ☮️&❤!
i loved this interview, I was 22 years old then and having a blast with the grunge scene, Soundgarden Alice I. C. my fav back then and Tool, but Tori rapidly became a favorite, these days 2022 after seeing these beautiful strong women I dont see women like these now and WHY???
GOOD FUCKING QUESTION. Like it seems like the ONLY available lane for women embracing strength these days is through embracing their sexuality--well, at least IMO, they aren't actually doing that. They're embracing a sexuality created for them. Tori was sexy and wrote about sex but wrote about it from her voice--sometimes full of lust, sometimes full of anger, resentment, warmth, complexity. And she wrote about a whole raft of other things too. I guess, hm. I guess Lana has some of that sensibility, and naturally Fiona Apple's still killing it, but a Tori, or like a Natalie Merchant? I feel like they're gone. Quiet strength and truths worth uncovering just aren't being done in pop anymore. Maybe Rosalia is a bit of that actually, too? And probably more. But not many and not getting spins. There is certain a vision of a strong female artist that existed in the 90s that just seems to have fallen away. Certainly the fuck not Taylor Swift.
I'd like to share with you my comment (above). I was very much influenced by these strong women in the 90s, so much that I needed to express myself through music. I will take my comments down in time because this is not my video. but anyway - I am here.
THIS is what the younger generations lack almost entirely now. Everything is disjointed and entitled. They don't even have the attention span for this whole interview. We didn't have rewind in those days. This is magic. She is a full free soul. It's beautiful. Then there's her music!!! Thank you Tori!
So many hours, days, listening to her records and obsessing about the evolution of her look/style. Man she made this little 15 year old boys life sparkle! Believe me, having been raised mormon, ain't nobody was singing about masturbating while the family was downstairs doing bible study. To me, life only truly started May 5th 1998 the day Choirgirl was released. I'm so lucky to have been able to meet her, and look her in the eye to tell her: "Your music, quite literally, saved my ass from a cult."
Eh. Not really. The comparison has been made often. Tori's voice is deeper a completely different texture. She also kind of resents the comparison. Lol
@@JustCammie I had never heard anyone make the comparison. don't you think there's a reason others have made it though? No two voices are IDENTICAL, that's why I said similar.
@ryan06105 I think it's because it's what people do naturally as human beings. And you did say similar, that's true. I think I relate to her frustration, so I always feel compelled to say something. People seem to always compare me to the same artist (unless they have more exposure to other female artists), and people really like to be viewed at unique. Especially singers. Voices are like fingerprints. You seem to get it, though. Sorry for coming off as defensive.
@ryan06105 are you a singer who writes their own songs? If not, then maybe it's just hard for you to empathize. I just wanted to shed some insight on her perspective from some interviews I've read. 🤷♀️

Tori has a really charming personality and her voice is so relaxing it's like ASMR.
Literally the best Tori interview ever.
Yes, this is just great and entertaining. Never seen this one before, I love it. Love Tori

What a great interview, just Tori free to have a laugh and relax, takes me right back to those early shows. Thankyou so much for sharing this one.
tori seems so relaxed
This is so cute!!
SHE IS SO STUNNING 😍😍😍😍
Tori is adorable!!
I missed all her interviews and performances growing up, it’s fantastic to go back and be able to finally see them
I couldn't stop thinking about the Chris Farley/Paul McCartney bit on SNL.
This is freaking amazing
her speaking voice is beautiful wtf she's charming
She's so amazing!!!
I have worshipped her since I first heart Silent All These Years. I immediately bought Little Earthquakes and she became my muse ❤
Do NOT worship anyone! Be your own man!
She is so engaging. Love that she loves Led Zepp.

something about this girl, her music, first time hearing her in person, its just so raw and refreshing.
awesome interview with Tori. Thanks for sharing! 💜
Just HOW did I miss this lady in the '90s ???
Holy shit i just stumbled upon the best tori interview! So good❤️
I just love them both so much.

@AR-ej2xw no, not Lana. She is also far too packaged. Maybe look into Weyes Blood.
I lived through and in the 90's grunge era. Music culture was such an immersive part of our lives.

Where did this come from? The video quality is great.
I believe this was a local cable access TV show in Chicago, I seem to remember this format. Most shows were not done this well.

It's the Rivera Theater in North Tonawanda, NY
Hot and talented.
After the first time I heard "Upside Down" I understood why she is Tori Amos.
Jerry Bryant always the best interviewer
When the video started before he spoke I thought he was Graeme Edge of The Moody Blues.
I thought it was 1992? 🤔
Well I never even thought of it before now, but her voice is similar to Kate Bush.

She’s high AF
No she's not. Tori doesn't get high and then go do interviews.
She truly is (both of them are, actually), and I live for it. "Very relaxed, but you know that."
she's genuinely just like this, and it's magical.
She is a fairy goddess
