    Don't throw away the flowers where the stem flops--cut a colored straw all the way down (so it opens up) and place it on the stem! Problem solved!

    I found your channel yesterday while looking up gomphrena. I was so surprised-these videos are SO well done! Lots of information, lots of colours, lots of examples so we can really see the textures etc, and all the examples of when to know when to cut flowers (and also for drying). That was so helpful! I saved a lot of seed heads from last year but my zinnas usually suffer from powdery mildew so I'm going to take your advice and start fresh. I would have never thought to buy seeds at the dollar store but I'll try that this year too. Thanks for all the great tips on the time to cut, where on the stem to cut and removing all the leaves. I know I will have a better harvest this year. Thanks for your clear and concise video.

    That's the problem I've had this year as a third year zinnia hobbyist.
    My first year, I never pruned the first flower because it didn't look expired. As a direct result, that plant never produced another bloom. Subsequently, I gave up trying to grow zinnias for years after that disappointment.
    My second year, giving it another try after some basic research as the internet took off... I was thrilled with the results from simply cutting that first flower that never looked like it needed to be cut. And they claim that ignorance is bliss.
    This is my third year growing zinnias and I have been cutting to the next shoot with a bud. I was wrong once again.
    Thank you so very much for the gardening tips!!!

    Thanks for your useful information. I grew some Pumila zinnias from the Dollar Tree, and they turned out very well. No need for Dollar Tree seed packets. Each flower has a gazillion seed. Dry and save whole flower head in paper bag so no mildew, and you'll know what color you're sprinkling over your prepared bed next spring.

    • @1818Farms
      @1818Farms  2 роки тому

      As a commercial flower grower we only plant “clean seeds” each year. We fight blight and leaf spot each year in our climate. If the plant has this disease, it is likely that the seed is a carrier. For this reason, we purchase fresh seeds each year to minimize the chance of disease.

    I sell to florists and one of my florists told me that they want some leaves left on the flower because they say it helps them absorb water. Also, they said that they pay more attention to the pollen in the center and only want a few of those "stars" present. They say that they are too old if more stars are present and don't want them. But in my experience, when only a few stars are present, the stem is usually floppy still. A strong, non flexible stem is always what I look for just like you said, regardless of how many stars there are. I have also always stripped all leaves off because I've heard it's better from other sources. Any idea why my florist would prefer their zinnias this way? I'm not saying they're wrong. They've been in business way longer than I've been growing flowers (only one year of official flower farming under my belt). I'm just confused because it seems to go against all that I've learned about zinnias. The way you described is exactly how I learned to pick them.

    • @1818Farms
      @1818Farms  2 роки тому +2

      I think they are wanting a specific aesthetic for their bouquets. What they are asking for, in my experience, will not provide them with long lasting zinnias. We strip all foliage on every flower we harvest.. This is so that we can focus on hydrating the flower itself and not foliage. The vase life is shortened with foliage remaining on the stem. Also, I never look at the pollen in the center. I wiggle and feel the flower stem to ensure it is mature enough to cut. Otherwise, you will have lots of broken heads and again short vase life. I cut thousands and thousands each season with this method. I think the florist is simply wanting a specific look and not realizing that what they are asking for is not best.

      I don’t because a lot of times I am growing specific colors. Once cross pollination occurs I am unsure of what colors I will get when I plant the seed.

    Beautiful !! Could you help me how to set the area for zinnias. Like I see you have support wires or something. Mine are so tall and falling all over. I would love to do better next year. Or even help mine now if you could tell me a better way. So they're not falling down and all over.

      The netting that we use is called Hortonova netting it is a life saver. We use the 4 foot wide rolls.

    If I harvested my zinnias and put them in a vase, how long would they last for? How often would i have to change the water? And would i have to put a couple drops of plant food in the water?

    • @1818Farms
      @1818Farms  3 роки тому +2

      The answer depends on many things. We place a CVBN tablet in our water to help keep the water clean. If the zinnias are cut at the correct stage you should get at least 7 days in the vase. To extend vase life, I trim the stems and fill the vase with fresh water every 48 hours. I also never place the vase of flowers in direct sunlight.

      We have fencing and a Great Pyrenees dog that stay with our sheep. This deters deer, and most other critters, from coming in.

    If I wanted to save zinnia seeds... how can I plant several varieties without them cross pollinating?

    • @1818Farms
      @1818Farms  2 роки тому

      That can be a problem. You can try and bag the blooms with an organza bag. Still may not prevent cross pollination.

    I am in zone 6. I planted Zinnias just to have the pollinators come, and boy did they! And then so did the birds. If I cut the flowers as you have shown and vase them, can I collect the seeds when they are done? Or does it require the remainder of the plant in order for the seed to mature?

    • @1818Farms
      @1818Farms  3 роки тому +1

      To collect seed, I place an organza bag over the bloom to keep it from being cross pollinated. I allow it to goto seed while attached to the plant. I then store the seeds until the next season.

    I’m in east AL so I’m glad I found you! hoping to start flower farming next year but gathering info because it is just a hobby now. Do you find the netting & the spacing helps with the leaf spot. I’ve read that over head watering can cause it so I won’t do that but man it can just dump buckets at my house when it storms. Also thrips, how do you keep from giving people a critter bouquet 🤦🏻‍♀️ 😅 my two main concerns, other than that I have zinnias out my ears. I’m glad i saw you cut that little side bloom off because i always felt guilty and left him on the plant. Do you teach classes because I’d be willing to drive to learn more in person.

    • @1818Farms
      @1818Farms  2 роки тому

      How exciting! Where in East ALABAMA? Spacing can help with the zinnias and leaf spot. A lot of that is hard to control due to our humidity. We try to have 2 succession plantings to help deal with that. The netting is to primarily keep things from falling over. I haven’t had a huge problem with thrips. We do spray neem oil when needed. I don’t offer any in person farming classes only a few hands on creative workshops.

      @@1818Farms I’m in Talladega, I’ll do my research on neem oil. What months do you plant your zinnias? Thank you for replying, if you ever want to teach in person i would definitely come with a notebook 😆

    Is there any difference between zinnia dahalia and zinnia cut and come back again?
    To me they look very similar

    • @1818Farms
      @1818Farms  3 роки тому

      There is quite a bit of size difference. The zinnia dahlia variety is very similar in size to Benary’s giants. Cut and come agains are typically much smaller blooms.
