In Canada, I tried keeping a junker going and the wheel ripped out at 20 years old. Because the frame holding the control arm snapped. I decided thats enough for me and had it scrapped. But I could have possibly welded it back together. Where I live there is no mandatory vehicles checks so nobody would know anyways.
As an engineer I lived and worked in 6 different African countries from 1969 to 1996. The trouble is new vehicles are abused as much as these wrecks. Almost new Land Rovers and Toyota pick ups are overloaded till the chasis is broken.
When their livelyhood depends on it they must do it no matter what the situation with what little is available, trying their very best to provide for their family, working hard so the family won't go hungry. I salute all these hard working people, seeing them i appreciate my job that I complain and feel ashamed and fortunate at the same time with the countless blessings I get compared to them but still I complain.
When we lived in egypt we needed to buy a fridge, stove, etc for our house. So we went to an appliance store in giza, paid a guy out front in a bed truck with sides that was falling apart like these vehicles to drive a full load back to our house in el rehab city just outside of cairo. I literally rode with the guy all the way home, the truck inside was actually cool as hell. Buddy put a stereo and lights, new seats, and surprised me when it drove so well. Yet this truck was 50 years old, and it was still working! If we drove em and maintained them our old fords could go like this!
Taken from the mostly French made Worst road series. Watch the full episodes it is amazing. The Mercedes truck in Madagascar took almost as many hours to drive 56 kilometers. The endurance , perseverance and never say die attitude of Africa people is unequaled. I live in Eswatini.

Those old engines are pretty simple and more robust, but yes, all of them seems to be maltreated, because with a lot of them you can do 1million KMS if well preserved, instead here, you see engines with blown head gasket, that eventually will die, almost all of them have no pressurized water circuit, missing oil cap, they are on life support. They work just because are old diesel engine. Broken starter motors ecc, broken gear box but yeah, the chassis is missing. Petrol engine from what I see can't run here. Without an alternator the battery discharge and it can't run, contrary to those mechanical diesel. If you bring a modern car or truck there, it will be a useless in few time.
It's a natural consequence of absurdly cheap labour and a severe capital shortage. You get the bizarre situation in some of these places that it's somehow economical to have 3 dudes working full time to keep a single relic truck running with hardly any proper spare parts and extremely basic tools. Made worse by absolutely brutal rural road conditions that rapidly chew up even the most robust machines. It's only through extreme grit an determination that they manage to get anything done! Though I find the ubiquitous absence of intake air filters disturbing. To my eyes it's the one thing these guys could do better. I figure even a janky one made from an old shirt would be better than nothing. Maybe I'm wrong though. In contrast there are many firms in Northern Europe and similar places that will sell machines as soon as they start developing problems, because replacing the whole machine is cheaper than the elevated maintenance costs and lost production from even moderate reliability problems.
You seriously just said the opposite of reality. The truth is that rust proofing is much better than it used to be and engines last far more miles than they used to.
