Best Ultra-Concealable Summer Carry Pistol: Kel-Tec P-3AT... Seriously

- Here's a slightly sarcastic, but not very funny, look at ultra-concealable handgun carry for the summertime. What I've found is that for much summer apparel, our preferred handguns for daily carry just don't work. So we've left with this dilemma: Go without a gun or carry a less than optimal gun. Guys! Come On! The best gun to carry is the gun you actually have on you. Enter the Kel-Tec P-3AT...
Wild that today a Ruger LCR is $200 and a keltec P32 is $250 if you can even find one. Then try and find some ammo.
I can't argue with that, biguy. I rarely wear those shorts except to work out, but in the summer, there are for me wardrobe situations that require something more concealable than the Glock. That was the point of the video, exaggerated though it was :)
Spot on video. I enjoyed the humor. Like you, I always have at least my P3AT. My Model 27 definitely does not like summer dress. Thanks for posting this. It was fun.
All true, my friend! I will say this about the KT trigger though, in both the P-3AT and the PF-9 -- They both get really smooth after break in. I'm not sure if you can pick that up in the video, but this gun is about 5 years old, and whenever I do shoot it I'm amazed at how good the DA trigger really is. I don't even stage it -- just one smooth pull all the way through.
Don’t knock this little gun! I had mine for 25 years or better. I have shot the gun at least 300 times and l used federal hydra shock ammo and it works great. I worked in a pawn shop for years with my family and l would use it in a minute. Aim for the head if it’s winter time!!! I always carry in my back pocket and it about the size of a cell phone. I have plenty other guns to carry ranging from 9MM to 45’s it’s my go to gun! If l’m in my house it’s a different story l will use the high cap
45 l have or my pump shot gun. There something about hearing a shot gun being engaged when it’s pumped back that would get an intruder attention!
I have no issues with the LCP. I'd love to hear the real story of how Ruger and Kel-Tec worked together and then not on that gun. It's extremely similar to the P-3AT, as you know, but I actually prefer the absence of the slide stop on the KT. The Ruger is definitely better looking, however. I need to use your model paint idea, btw. I've been trying to talk to a guy who was shot at 3 yards in the chest with a .380 to ask if it stopped him, but I can't find any... they're all dead :)
The issue I have is the magazine release button is far too easy to push and while the P-3AT is in my pocket I often find that the magazine is released. Hell of a thing to happen if I need it quickly.
I have ewo of the Keltecs the 32 and the 380 both from watchng his videos and carry them every day as a backup . My slides are both hardchromed for where i live . Great choice for a back up .Gerry
Interesting. Well, I probably won't go for a P-3AT, but the PF-9 is another I have looked seriously at before. Maybe I'll have to give it another look. :) Good to know the triggers smooth out like that.
Hey Rob...I don’t have any direct experience with the Kel-Tec. My summer carry (when I just can't carry my G19 or Kahr PM9) is the Ruger LCP 380 with Crimson Trace LaserGuard and loaded with Speer Gold Dots. I've had it for about 3 years and it works great! Fits in front pocker, back pocket or cargo pocket. I've also painted the meager sights with some high contrast model paint. Can the 380 stop a man? I sure as heck wouldn't argue with one!
The only thing, other than the terrible sights, that I would change on the LCP is the fact that it doesn't lock back after the last round. Not a deal breaker. Just my preference. Also, I have heard that the new generation LCPs have better sights. Oh...And, if you come up with someone who has been shot, make sure you interview him/her!
Ha! Never fooled me, I knew your "friend's gun" was a sham! :) I have the Ruger LCP (the copper colored Arizona Centennial Edition--gorgeous little pea-shooter!). It's my main CCW gun. I looked at the Kel-Tec, but man...the trigger on that sucker is rough. The LCP's isn't necessarily great either, but compared to the Kel-Tec the Ruger's is a dream! :) Oh, and Dirty Harry needs to work on his draw technique. LOL!!!
They aren't under powered. 380 is a short 9mm. Enough there to stop most threats that might come along.
I carry either 1 or 2 of these every day.
Your case is made in spades. Thank you!
I’m amazed at those elitists who give their Sigs, S&Ms, etc…, a clean pass for failures, due to break in, which is apparently a normal occurrence for those guns.
However, if a Kel Tec fails for any reason, it’s a really because it’s a piece of crap.
Even though the moron doing the review, ins
But you still have rocks, my friend :(
Thanks, Scott. I actually sold my PF-9 to purchase a G26. I ultimately made a decision that if I was going IWB holster, I'd rather have the capacity, shootability and reliability of a Glock, and if I had to go pocket carry the P-3AT would fill that role. But if budget would have allowed at the time, I'd still have my PF-9. It's a great little gun.
But it is so butt ugly.
That’s what they said to Gaston Glock. It’s UGLY, they said. It’ll never sell, they said. They were wrong.
Not any uglier than any Glock.
Like the Ruger better?
