I think it safe to say your viewers are thrilled you saw this project through. Peter Falk hits quite a bit harder in this one than he ever does again in the interrogation scenes with Katherine Justice.

When I was in school, I had the pleasure of meeting the stepdaughter of composer David Grusin on a train. She was kind enough to introduce me to him in the weeks that followed as I was just starting to develop an interest in composition. Years later, I would have the honor of performing on a recording project of his where I was able to thank him again for the generosity he showed me as a student. Mr. Grusin’s work as a composer, pianist, and producer had a profound influence on my development as a musician and I will be eternally grateful.

OK, I’ll put in my 2 cents’ worth. I first saw William Windom in a short-lived TV series he starred in called My World and Welcome To It (1969-70). He played a day-dreaming cartoonist with a wife and daughter. His character was based on the real cartoonist, James Thurber, and the creators of the series, therefore, mixed Thurber’s line-art cartoons in with the live-action in every episode. In 1969, I was a troubled 12 year old boy, without a father, and I adored William Windom and wanted to be part of his TV family. (The same was true of My Three Sons, Father Knows Best, and Leave it To Beaver).
I’m a huge Columbo fan and because I live in Los Angeles, I recognize some of the outdoor locations they used. Prescription Murder was a great pilot for the series and thank you for the great review. There was one thing missing, though.
In a later scene in the movie, in Dr Fleming’s office, Columbo and the Dr are talking about smart murderers when Columbo asks
Lt. Columbo: Tell me, Doctor, how do you catch a man like that?
    Dr. Ray Flemming: You don't.
Lt. Columbo: You're probably right. He sounds just too clever for us. What I mean is, you know, cops, we're not the brightest guys in the world. Of course, we got one thing going for us: we're professionals. I mean, you take our
friend here, the murderer. He's very smart, but he's an amateur. I mean, he's got just one time to learn. Just one. And with us, well, with us, it's - it's a business. You see, we do this a hundred times a year. I'll tell ya, Doc. That's a lot of practice.
That for me summarizes the story lines of all coming episodes: Columbo loves outsmarting killers. Even though they may be more clever, wealthy, and better connected than he is, when someone commits murder, they are in Columbo’s pool now, and he’s the shark. In the end, the professional schools the amateur, sometimes in a beautiful, jaw-dropping finale.

Just one thing. It's a little detail that's bothering me. You know, my boss wants everything clear in the report, so I have to follow up on these little details. It's just routine.
You mentioned a daydreaming cartoonist who had a wife and daughter. I did some checking. The wife ended up dead, and they ruled it a suicide, but I don't like suicide. It's such a mess, no loose ends that can be tied up when someone kills herself, a lady like this who seemed to have every reason to live...a hard working husband who loved her, a daughter...
You said you wanted to be part of the family, and there were additional fingerprints found in the cartoonist's house. The official report credited them to unknown house guests, so many people coming and going. You know, every time I walk in the door, Mrs. Columbo has someone or another there visiting, having coffee, chatting - the guests touch all sorts of things.
Well, I know you're busy, your time is valuable - I'd like to take your fingerprints, just to check them against the prints found in the house. I know it won't be anything. And no, I don't have a hunch. It's just for the report.

This is the movie that first introduced me to Columbo. Back in high school it was being shown on tv one day. I started watching more episodes although it was not until recently I could say I have seen every episode. Thanks for persevering through the death of a thousand cuts to produce this superb witty video.
There are many fine acting scenes by the main players in this film but I especially like when Falk is grilling Justice at the movie studio.
Columbo tougher and more antagonistic than we are used to, breaking Joan down, but she steels her nerves, and denies Columbo the win.
Justice is very effective as the vulnerable smitten patient, in over her head, reluctantly following a plan, with a man who is simply using her.
I seldom feel empathy for the victims in these dramas but Foch, as Carol, delivers a sympathetic character who want to believe the best of her husband.
And of course Falk and Barry have excellent scenes together with Dr. Flemming maybe telling Columbo how to use his innate under dog style to greater advantage against future criminals.

Your seldom feeling empathy for the victim point is so often true in Columbo. The victims are often worse in some ways than the murderers themselves. If it's not an I'll-expose-you-and-crush-you scenario, it's I'll-take-you-for-everything-you're-worth. In the Columbo universe, the last thing one should ever do, is agree to a meeting after having had such a confrontion.

I stumbled upon your marvelous reviews when I was looking for something to pass the time while working from home. I was just starting over on the four seasons of the color versions of Dragnet when I saw your review for "Etude in Black" and I was hooked.
I've watched about every episode of the original Columbo series countless times but in "Etude" you'd point something out and I'd say "I didn't notice that!!"
Regarding "Prescription: Murder," it is definitely worthy of five cigars. I seem to recall an interview Peter Falk did with Johnny Carson and he said something to the effect that it may have been the best episode and I think that argument could definitely be made.
Kudos to you for pointing out the smoky cake (sure to set off smoke alarms these days) and the applause without anybody clapping--two things I never noticed.
"Go make some lunch three feet behind me while I throw all this stuff overboard." Hilarious! That's great insight!
Exodus 20:13! Spot on! Ray is definitely a "do as I say, not as I do" schmuck.
Other hilarious moments in this episode include Carol telling Ray not to bother getting undressed in their bedroom, stating she's "turned down the sheets in the guest room." She's rightly furious at her philandering husband yet she's considerate enough get his bed ready.
In that same scene, Ray tries to "escape" their bedroom, saying he's going to read. Then Carol calls him back and the look on Ray's face is priceless. You'd think he was headed to the electric chair instead of back to his loving wife.
Before I close my thoughts on this episode I'd be remiss if I didn't throw in a "Ohhhh, Botticelli's!!!!" in a derisive tone.
A couple final things...my PayPal account is empty but I began the process of transferring a little cash into it before I launched into this and I'll be buying you some coffee and a bowl of chili when it's in there (probably around Nov. 12) Such great work shouldn't go unrewarded!
And finally (finally) I've never subscribed to a UA-cam contributor in my life but you are going to be the first. I don't want to miss a review!! I hope the copyright hassles don't deter you from this terrific effort.
And, yes, my name really is "Ralph."

@@WatchitforDays In my long-winded review above, I neglected to mention Flemming’s secretary, played by Virginia Gregg. Virginia was in dozens of colorized versions of Dragnet, usually playing a abrasive, loudmouth bi…er, unpleasant woman. Some of her most memorable roles included a candy store worker who’s on duty when the place is robbed-twice! (She really lets Joe Friday have it for that!), the key crook in a pyramid scheme and the wife of a cop who’s shot and dies hours later. No loud abrasiveness in that role-just a genuinely moving performance!

And it should be pointed out this interview aired just as season 2 was beginning so Falk may have changed his mind about the best episode along the way. I think the interesting thing about this first Columbo appearance is that, your whole perspective of the character Columbo would alter drastically depending on whether you've watched this episode before the others, mid way, or not at all. The reason being that Columbo's whole "clueless, friendly cop" act is blown by the Doctor here, and as you mentioned his "intensity", at the same time he proves to be somewhat vindictive and competitive (with regards to the killer)...a quality which, while still lurking beneath, is sort of downplayed in future episodes, especially in the 1990s.

Whenever I hear the name of that movie, I always think of when Jay Leno did the Headlines bit and he showed a misprint where there was a screening of that movie somewhere and they called it "Pants of Glory" lol. Nice shoes for Peter Falk. Although I can see why he went with the brown ones for the rest of the series. Nicer earth tone, fits the character's cheap look. I remember Falk saying in an interview he wanted a very "drab" look for the character, so the light brown color does fit the Columbo character well. I wonder how much Falk paid for the later pair of shoes lol. See what I did there?

It's much more serious than later Columbo episodes and Columbo himself appears much more well groomed and plays harder against one hell of a smooth and slick villain. I'm not sure if the police procedure that leads to Dr. Fleming accepting his defeat is legal. He utters the words (non verbatim): "Something could have been arranged, an accident perhaps". He is so damn sure of himself. I love the "gotcha!" look on Peter Falk's face, when Dr. Fleming finally finds out that Columbo knows at least as much about people as himself. Columbo simply learned it from the "other side of the tracks" and through experience. Excellent tv movie!

This ranks highly for me among Columbo episodes, and I'm glad you mentioned Dave Grusin, whose work on The Graduate I'm a big fan of. I thought that Gene Barry was one of the best villains, up there with Jack Cassidy and Robert Culp. I enjoyed your analysis and look forward to watching the video you did for"Ransom for a Dead Man".
