  • The Stagg electric upright bass (or E.U.B.) is an affordable instrument.
It's perfect for practicing upright bass playing, without the hassles of a full acoustic upright bass.
It also works nicely in recording (hear for yourself).
The Stagg 3/4 Size Electric Double Bass: (Affiliate link)
    amzn.to/2JhrSMG
It is Lightweight, powered with a 9-volt battery, headphones jack, audio in jack (for practicing with your favorite music), a volume knob, and a Sub Bass knob.
It's easy to replace the strings because of the permanent bridge.
The strings' action is also easily adjustable.
You can also rest your thumb (for the thumb position) on the thumb frame.
It has position marking dots, which makes your practicing easier. It comes with a gig bag.
There are Handles (rests) for placing the bass on your body.
    Pros and Cons:
    - I like the sound. It surprised me with how close it sounds to acoustic double bass.
    - The headphone jack is a big plus. You can play at any time and listen carefully to your intonation.
    - This electric double bass buzz a little at certain positions.
    - Nice value for the price
    - The fretboard was pretty thick. I had to give it to my guitar tech/luthier for reshaping.
You should be careful if you try to do that. There's not a lot you can cut before you damage the instrument. Please give it to someone who is a professional.
    The fretboard is better now.

Literally perfect timing for a video. I’ve been playing electric bass for a few years and I want a double. I’m definitely getting one. This is probably the best review I’ve ever seen.

I've been having this one since 2009; it's way better than ibabez or warwick edb with shorter scale, when it comes to... how much similar to the tone of acoustic upright. I think the length of the string matters and STAGG EDB is long enough.

When I bought one, I saw the video and what you did seemed somewhat wild to me, today after a few months of practice I'm about to grab the rasp and do the same thing you did, the pain in the thumb supporting that edge is very strong that has the fretboard.
I also made a modification that is on the internet to the preamp that eliminates the headphone and the mp3 input and also lowered the volume of the microphone on the G and D strings (it has 2 mics, another for E and A) with a preset that has on the plate, and I achieved a sound more similar to a very pleasant acoustic double bass and the battery consumes only 20% of how it comes from the factory. Today is pure enjoyment, I just need to do what this video does, which is really necessary.
Thank you very much for the video

Cool video. Thanks for the idea about re-shaping the neck. It has never occurred me to consider doing that, I will now. I have owned one for several years and I also think the neck is a bit thick. I also get some buzz but did not check how much more or less without the handles, I will try that as well. I liked your recording with the different Sub settings. Thanks for sharing.

I put a set of daddario light hybrids on it. What a difference. Lots of sustain and growl. Lower action plus good compromise for bowing as well. The set is $130 at upton bass. Turns it into a totally different instrument. There is good eub stand by k&m available that you can use to hold the bass while you are playing it.

Was the neck thickness same as an acoustic upright bass? What instruction did you give luthier re: reducing thickness & what did it cost? Tx

      @Idogomusic  2 роки тому +2

Thanks! I just told him to reduce as much as he can without harming the instrument, so if you do it, give to a pro. It was thick as some acoustic uprights, this is a general problem with chinese uprights I think.

    Thanks for the video.
It's a good thing to have an electric upright bass close to the acoustic version.
For reviews or demos, the scale length should also be mentioned (some do). To eliminate guess work.
A long scale length cannot be mimicked or simulated by amplification.
Unconventional string material could bring some desirable effect on the sound, with a shorter scale length.
This bass seems to have a long scale (around 42/43 inches), but doesn't seem to be so much better than smaller scale lengths.
There are some 34 inch scale length models which can bring some degree of satisfaction!

    • @latenight5865
      @latenight5865 2 роки тому +2

From my experience, the length of the strings still matters; 34 inch upright sounds more like a fretless bass guitar, while this definitely sounds closer to double bass than bass guitar, thanks to its longer strings.

First off, I want to say that at the end of the day, this instrument sounds fine. That said, there are numerous issues with this instrument, and Stagg in general. I would say not to buy this online, and understand that what you are buying is CHEAP.
First off, when I received the bass, it had a massive crack on the back. Does not affect playability, but basically I bought a well used instrument worth a fraction of what I paid for it. Secondly, there is a chip on the side of the fret board- again not affecting playability.
Third, there is an undocumented issue with the leg that causes it to rattle. After several months of sending emails to Stagg, finally they told me to buy a screw and insert it into the back of the lower body. I don't know why this screw is not included, but I got one (time = money).
Forth, the electronics are CHEAP and odd. I don't trust them to be honest.
Fifth, Stagg really didn't honor their warranty. I have dozens of emails to Stagg as well as to the store where I bought the bass. Stagg actually accused me of dropping the instrument and then trying to make a bogus claim. Since I video'd the opening of the box, I sent it to them- that shut them up real quickly, but they didn't apologize.
The bass is cool, it sounds good, and people in general love it. The thing is that the components are cheap and the company is pretty lame. Not American-style service.
If you do buy this, get a stand otherwise you'll always be worried about it falling over.
