The look of SIRUI's flares, and the changing of the squeeze factor as you focus is a deal breaker for me. I am grateful though that more and more affordable anamorphic lenses are starting to hit the market.
Hello Tom. This information brings back many memories (some even good). In the 1950's I was a projectionist at the local drive-in theatre. Our screen was not the proper shape for "scope" so it was a fun evening when we played a film where two characters were at the extreme sides of the image on the film. Funny to see the two talking noses at either side of the screen. Our local TV station played some scope films that were "edited for TV". That is to say they panned the transfer camera from side to side in an effort to eliminate the talking noses effect. This very distracting pan and scan technique is also present in early VHS tape recordings. Unlike the camera lenses you describe, the cinema projection lenses have two adjustments. Not only is the prime imaging lens focused but also the anamorphic element is adjustable. Those lenses had an anamorphic focus ring calibrated in approximate distance from the projector to the screen. Improper adjustment of the anamorphic element yielded fuzzy images at both sides of the screen. There was also a distracting rainbow fringe that occurred the farther the image was from the center of the screen. These adjustments were made by the installer and remained locked in place thereafter. Anamorphic lenses are still used in theatre digital projection where they do distort the shape of the projected pixels. Also 70mm film can be shot and projected anamorphic. The recent "Hateful 8" is an example of this process. As you can see, everything old is still old. KEN

I bought the Sirui 50mm and 75mm for my R5 c from Indiegogo. Wish my camera had the de-squeeze to match the lens, but had to settle for a 1.3x de-squeeze so I could see exactly what will fit into 2.39:1. Soon as I got the Sirui's, a whole bunch of other anamorphic lenses were announced or launched (which is to be expected I guess). Not sure how much I love the very blue lens flare, but after wrapping my head around the math for desqueeze and cropping to fit 4K (off of 8K footage), it's definitely got a special quality to it. The calculator you mentioned has been helpful... it's not perfect, but it's definitely appreciated. I've used it throughout my tests to try and find the sweet spot. I also noticed the 75mm is nicer than the 50mm, but they're both super cool to play with.
These are the only ones I've used so I can't speak to all the competitors, but I've heard form friends that the cheaper ones feel, well, cheaper. I'm really impressed with the build and sharpness of the Sirui. The blue flares do sometimes look strange in a warm-toned scene, but I usually won't argue with blue.

Use them for photography and they'll really blow your mind:) Assigning a button to magnify can definitely help with hitting focus on these lenses. Peaking isn't always accurate on them.

But, still only one degree of separation from the Arnold... I really appreciate your explanation of how they work and possible applications. Fun stuff and great for different looks (don't say cinematic, don't say cinematic...) in photos and videos.

yes! i have both of these lenses for my S5. a bit on the heavy side, especially that 75mm lens, but they are just so much fun to shoot with! i mostly just like the anamorphic distortion and just the overall look of them. lens flairs are fun, but for my taste it's about the wide field of view and the "vintage-y" like look they produce, yeah it's just very pleasing! well to me anyway! one thing i'm going to check out at some point is the Great Joy 50mm, EF, and with a speed boost, put it on my bmpcc 4k. that'll be fun!

This part still fuzzy to me. I still don't get it how desqueezing do not result in a pixel interpolation. I do not own anamorphic lens (yet...G.A.S) but I would like to look at an anamorphic shot of a white paper with a lot of perpendicular black points to see if they still perpendicular with no interpolation once processed and desqueezed.
Appreciate the actual 'what are they?' about anamorphic lenses. I'm on the fence about trying one out, but I like your idea of renting one first. 👍 And yes - everyone can stop saying 'CINEMATIC!' about everything they film. It's getting stupid. 😉
Renting lenses is awesome. Sometimes I’ll make a list of specific shots I want to sue a certain lens for, and then rent it once the list is long enough so I can use it for a bunch of different projects all at once or create a “library” of shots with it. A library of epic cinematic shots 😁

So I’m dealing with the problem of finding a good lens to shoot real estate video with the a7 iv 4k60 crop.. pre ordered the 11mm 1.8 aps-c lens (have no clue how that will look but the math is there lol).. was wondering if you’d recommend trying out an anamorphic lens for real estate video? Or is that a bad idea altogether?
That's an interesting question. I'm not a real estate photographer, but I know that wide lenses (like the 11mm) are typically the way to go. It'd be interesting to see how a client likes a few anamorphic photos. Might be a fun idea to rent one and try!
It always depends on your personal preference. I love the 24mm GM, but 24 is my favorite focal length. I also really love the Zeiss 85. I don't think you can go wrong with any of the GM lenses. Expensive but worth the price.
The only reasons imo to use anamorphic lens is: *The depth of field. When you're using a 65mm 2X anamorphic ( like the Atlas Orion) then you're getting a FOV or around 48mm but with the DOF of the 65mm and the higher you go in mm the more impressive it looks. The massive downside is the close focus distance. It's always bad and I don't want to use dioptres and add even more glass on the lens just to focus closer. For me anything less than 2X is not " true" anamorphic because the effect you get is minimal. * The oval bokeh is obvious on 2x anamorphic lenses, anything less it's barely visible. Arri has the 19-36 T 4.2 anamorphic lens which cost over £120.000...

Nope! It's how the lens is intended to be used, so I think it's more like "rearranging" pixels rather than distorting them.

I love it for photos, but it’s not quite the same as a true panoramic. But I think it’s a VERY cool result.
@@tombuck oddly enough, no one has come up with a true panoramic digital camera as of late - I guess because you can stitch images in post… 😊
Just on thing, the height should be 62.5%, because you want to divide your width by 1.6, meaning the 1.3X would be ~77%.
Nice video. 1.3x seems too less, but i guess it works for certain scenes. My favorite about be 1.5x at least, or 2x is perfect
