Great Video! I have an Old Buffalo Bench grinder I'm cleaning up!! Thing runs like a champ.. now I may have to check the bearings!! TY for your hard work.....I love fixing old things..... They just don't build stuff this way anymore! Throw away!! This ginder your working on is a Huge compared to mine! Yes, I am a tight wad with tools, they're just too expensive to not take care of them even if they are ancient!!

Thanks for commenting! I'm doing a welding course at my local TAFE college at the moment (citsolutions.edu.au/courses/at_home/home_garden_and_garage/welding_introduction), and they have a pedestal grinder in the welding workshop that makes this one look like a newborn baby! 😊

Its a pity you didnt have a bench grinder to do all that filing.

I don't have anywhere near 6202 zulu bearings. I've probably got like, one, that's already busted.

Hi , I've just picked up an old grinder identical to yours that runs fine (brief on and off test) but has clearly been left for ages somewhere damp and has a bloom of rust all over . Thought I'd check it over internally before I ran it properly . On mine the bracket you point out at 3:59 has a Tufnol insulation plate on it with two earth wires , one goes off to the windings the other to the switch . There's also a centrifugally operated mechanism on the shaft next to it , any idea what that is ? Otherwise , as I say, it's identical to yours which has the fixing holes for the (whatever it is) that's on mine . The old bearing grease needs cleaning out and replacing but otherwise I was pleasantly surprised to see how clean it was inside . . Any ideas what the dooflicator on the shaft is ?

A single-phase electric motor like this needs to use a capacitor to start it up. Some motors (like the one in my grinder) use a capacitor that's permanently connected and stays in-circuit during both startup and running:
      circuitglobe.com/permanent-split-capacitor-psc-motor.html
Other motors (like yours) use a centrifugal switch to disconnect the capacitor once the motor reaches about 70% of full speed. This style of motor gives a very high startup torque, so your grinder should spin up much faster than mine:
      circuitglobe.com/capacitor-start-induction-motor.html
If you're interested in how electric motors work I can recommend this guy's channel, he's a very good teacher:

@@TightwadWorkshop Thank you very much for taking the time to reply and the links . I did notice that yours was taking longer to spin up . To be honest , if that's the only difference it makes then I'd rather mine did too as It seems if the disconnect switch fails unnoticed then the windings will die . .Hmmm .
I'll read up more on it and see what precautions I can take . . . Thanks again .

You're most welcome - we're a tiny channel, and that leaves plenty of time for responding with "the personal touch". 😊
To be honest, I wouldn't worry about that switch failing. It's quite a rare occurrence, and you'll notice if it does (you won't hear that "click" as it slows down after you've turned it off, for one thing). I also suspect it's more likely to fail in the "off" than in the "on" state.
