Now that i actually have my oil catch can from VSE the issue has been finding time to get it installed. I have a friend who is a diesel mechanic for a Chevrolet dealership and he usually takes care of my Duramax needs at his house. After watching this video I'm thinking about doing this install myself. I just wish VSE had released their catch can before my friend installed the PPE charge air cooler I now have installed on my motor. I'm sure that there is some oil residue inside of now and it would be nice if there wasn't any at all.
I just got mine delivered a few weeks ago and finally installed it today. You can do it at home without much trouble... I didn't have the specialized tools and yes the clips were a little difficult. aside from the catch can mine is completely stock and there's not a whole lot of room to work in there. I'd suggest putting a little bit of Dawn soap on each of the rubber hoses to assist sliding them on. The most difficult is the J hose. The key is having the clips oriented correctly so you can easily get to them.
Nice. Just need mine to get here now. As far as additives I use amsoil all in one every now and then. I can definitely feel the difference when I add it vs when I don’t. It runs smoother and quieter and has more get up and go.
keep us updated. i have very frequent regens. about 180-200 miles average. i do a lot of short to medium trips daily. 2024 LZO max trailer package. 5k miles.
I’m only at 3k miles in my 24 AT4, but I’m experiencing similar. Was averaging about 350 miles for regen for a while, and now it’s dropped to 248 for me. My average drive is 29 miles to work and the same back home, so more than enough time to warm everything up. I also hope this helps reduce that.
Got here on Friday and got everything ready today, Saturday, May 4. Whew, it took me more than thirty minutes. Well, it does look quite good. I sort of desire the black model you have rather than this silver, chrome one. I would love to get the same sticker that you've added to your catch can 😊❤
VSE engraved my logo on the can. i do have some stickers becoming available in the near future, unsure how well they would handle the underhood temps on the can though.
Interesting product and very informative. I know very little about diesel engines and puzzled by one thing. What drives the design requirements/philosophy differences of diesel vs. gas engines where the small gas turbos (in Ford or Toyota trucks and SUV’s) do not consume any noticeable oil even under normal towing situations and one never needs to add oil in between changes (at least as far as I am aware in an engine with no mechanical issues) but its pretty much a given with these Duramax 3.0 and other diesel engines? Hopefully you can shed some light on this for me as to why a gas turbo doesn’t consume so much or any oil vs a diesel. I just cant wrap my head around engines in this day and age using so much oil as “normal” yet very interested in this engine for my future purchase. As always, great content.
Phew, I gotta hustle and create a UA-cam channel soon. Placed an order for my equipment on March 14, still waiting patiently. Your channel is awesome, dude. It played a big part in my decision to purchase a baby Diesel - just love it. Interested in getting some merchandise, can you share the link?
Arrived on Friday and set it up today, Saturday, May 4. Man, it took me over half an hour. Wow, it looks pretty nice. I kinda wish I had the black version like yours instead of the silver, chrome one. I want one the sticker that you have put one on catch can😊❤
I have the raw aluminum one also. I'm fine with it. It's buried in the back of the engine bay. One can hardly see it. If is were up in the front or higher up I probably would have spent the extra $100 for the black coating so it would have matched the black PPE charge air cooler I have already installed. I'm just happy it's going to catch the oil vapor now and keep it out the turbo and charge air cooler. That's what is most important
Great video! Waiting for mine that I ordered back in March with original 3-4 week lead time. Emailed them yesterday and was told I'm 168th in their order queue and may be an additional 4-6 weeks if I'm lucky. Bummer!
Love your video. Will get your catch can soon. I don’t know why lm2 oil temp (230f) is always hotter than cooling temp. Is that normal? Could you please tell me where is the oil cooler located? I couldn’t find the info anywhere. Thanks in advance
Thank you for another great install video! I take all of your advice very seriously and I went ahead and ordered a pair of those pliers in anticipation of receiving my catch can. I’m excited to get mine and install it! I looked through my Idash, and unless it’s labeled differently I didn’t see a setting for monitoring the crank case pressure line that you were looking at on the laptop.
Nice video. Only thing I would recommend is showing some closeups especially where that preformed hose connection is if that’s even possible. It looks like a really well thought out design. I wonder if the 1 psi bypass would eventually get gummed up with residue? Does VSE say anything about maintenance besides drain intervals?
Here is what I need to know every body with diesels are always adding new parts to them?Im 60 years old and I want to retire with the next truck I bye.Ive been driving trucks for 38 years and I want a small hi-bread camper made 7000 pounds to camp with my grand kids Can the LZ0 in stock form not cost me a arm and a leg to get the job done ??
May 16, 2024 Update: After install started truck and drove out of garage and parked pickup, no issues. First drive was a 700 mile trip with my Rmax2 in my dump trailer from Idaho to Sacramento over the Sierra Nevada. Somewhere along the trip got a CEL. Banks iDash won't read or clear the code but in stored codes it shows P04DB. Checked hoses and I don't see any obvious leaks etc. and truck runs fine. Now that I made it to my destination I will have a couple days to check it out more and drive around without the trailer in tow before trip back over same route on the 22nd. May 13, 2024 Installed yesterday on my 2020 Sierra LM2. I was able to do it with new adjustable HF pliers no problem. The LM2 is a bit different as there is a power wire with silver heat reflective material inline with the hoses as they connect to the can. I cut the ziptie holding the wire to add flexibility and ran the wire between the hoses. At the back of the can there is a sensor in the heater hose that is close to the can when installed. I plan to remove the passenger side wheel and fender liner for better access and see if I can tie the hose away from the can a little to prevent chafing. Interesting observation, when I disconnected the stock hose from the turbo there was no sign of any oil. This is different than Greg's experience and my truck has 55,000 miles on it!
Did you have any luck keeping the heater core hose away from the can? Just went to install mine today and ran into this issue. Would be super slick if that sensor wasn't in the way!

This sucks. I bought this catch can, dropped it in the truck, but my truck has a bunch of wires mounted on top of my battery. The wires interfere with the catch can. Any ideas on how to reroute the wires?
I’m seeing similar things. At the 3k miles on my lz0, and about 250 miles for regen. Drops to anywhere from 5-35 after regen and then does suddenly jump back up to 50-55 before climbing slower.
Looking forward to your review after using the can for a while. A little off topic: you said you don’t use any additives in your fuel. Any particular reason? I noticed the GM manual recommends additives. This is my first diesel so I’m just trying not to mess up too bad.

I personally think it’s because most owners wouldn’t have a clue on what to do and now you are creating a situation for the owner to have waste oil in their possession which now must be disposed of properly. Us truck/car folk are ok with those extra things, but many people like zero maintenance.
And it would be an extra cost to the manufacturer that isn’t necessary to keep the engine operating throughout the warranty period which they already seem to barely care about. They don’t care about your vehicle’s long term performance, maintenance costs, or lifespan. They care about selling you new vehicles and new parts when the warranty is over. I recently received my catch can and I have a problem. There are no instructions for the LM2 only the LZO. The hose configuration is totally different than the LZO. Has anyone else found the installation instructions for the LM2??
@@billm6850mine were connected to the hose coming off the camshaft cover for one. The other hose connected to the turbo where that prior hose was connected to. Nothing is connected to the firewall.
I think you misunderstood me not connecting to the firewall. Anyway thanks for your replies I just wasn’t seeing the hose with the powder blue hose clamp. I paused your video and saw you releasing the powder blue clamp.
@@billm6850yeah, I’m unsure on what is misunderstood with the install. The camshaft cover is the exact same from 20-24 and this catch can will attach to that exact same hose.
Blow by comes with the engine from the factory. What you are seeing , I am assuming is some pressure and vapor from the oil cap when the engine is running. That’s inherent to the design of the diesel, it’s a nonissue. You have a crankcase pressure sensor to let you know if there is a major issue.
Vse , what a scam!! Order 5 weeks ago contact them 2 weeks after ordering they say it will be 2 to 3 weeks before shipping, and now they say multiple weeks out with no date to ship, called for a refund no response. STAY AWAY!!
I'm assuming you do not follow them on social media? They provide updates on there often and with the recent tornado that ripped through their town, they were showing the work they were doing outside of their normal business to help get people in a good place. That being said, If you ordered 5 weeks ago, you were late to the ordering process and had quite a few people in front of you. They have also posted on social media prior to the tornado, that they were making them as quickly as possible and were behind. I'm confident they will get back to you on the refund, my youtube channel isn't where you will get that, though.
First thing I would suggest is to check your valve to make sure the lever is not open. The red lever should be at 90 degrees to the hose. If the lever is inline with the hose, then it is open and you will get that code. Just a suggestion.
most people cannot even handle taking the vehicle in for maintenance let alone drain a container. Then they have waste oil to dispose of, this is for the 1% that truly care about their vehicle.
This is what I’ve been waiting on for a while-thanks for the vid drop! Please post more with updates.

Super!
Mine burns a ton of oil, GM couldn’t give a shit.
im surprised there's a bypass in this setup.
How do you drain it?
18:18 it's shown
@@DemonWorks Thanks! I literally must've gotten up to get more coffee when that part came up!lol!
I recently received my catch can and I have a problem. There are no instructions for the LM2 only the LZO. The hose configuration is totally different than the LZO. Has anyone else found the installation instructions for the LM2??
The hose configuration is identical, it’s the same camshaft cover. Are you certain you are looking at the correct hoses to attach to?
@@DemonWorks you connected your hoses at the firewall under the cowl, There are no hoses to connect to there on my 2022.5 LM2.
Anyone got anything about blowby? 2021 LM2
What are you looking for?
Well i have blow by on my 2021 lm2 with 84k. Wife has 21 Tahoe lm2 with 42k. Also does it?
You’re the pro but I’m pretty sure blowby shouldn’t happen on these motors?
Blow by comes with the engine from the factory. What you are seeing , I am assuming is some pressure and vapor from the oil cap when the engine is running. That’s inherent to the design of the diesel, it’s a nonissue. You have a crankcase pressure sensor to let you know if there is a major issue.
Thank you sir. YOUR A WEALTH OF KNOWLEDGE on these!
P04DB code with this!!!
You got that code?
First thing I would suggest is to check your valve to make sure the lever is not open. The red lever should be at 90 degrees to the hose. If the lever is inline with the hose, then it is open and you will get that code. Just a suggestion.
@@DemonWorks I got that code, see my update from yesterday.
@@mattbissell2060which update? I must have missed it?
@@DemonWorksmy comment here posted 5 days ago and updated yesterday.
Why don't car manufactures include this in a $ 40,000 vehicle ??
most people cannot even handle taking the vehicle in for maintenance let alone drain a container. Then they have waste oil to dispose of, this is for the 1% that truly care about their vehicle.
@@DemonWorks But literally, couldn't you just pour it back into the oil pan?
