Appreciate the video showing the installation process. Being new to diesel engines and weekend mechanic, this will help me with the do's and don'ts installing this fuel system.
Thanks for posting this install. I have a 2023 Sierra SLT with the LZ0 and am thinking about this mod. especially considering the fuel these days! I do have an IDASH which I mostly use to keep up with the REGENS and other parameters. When you change out the fuel filters for this new rig it would be nice to cut them open and see what’s inside.😮
Also VSE sent me a complimentary set of Baldwin filters as they have had a lot of issues with the Donaldson filters leaking.
That's good customer service !
Got mine installed today and like you said always good to double check tightness from the manufacturer, my water separator adapter was loose and the inner o-ring wasn’t on the housing already so I missed it and had a leak after installing mine, until I looked closely at your video I had no idea it was missing because the instructions don’t mention it
I've pre ordered mine. Hope it doesn't take too long to get it.
Enjoyed the video, don’t sweat the extension 90% of the vehicles on the road probably have a 10mm socket stowed away on them somewhere lol.
Do you have an affiliate link for the VSE gear you have shown in the last few months?
Hey ! You are absolutely correct about the 10mm in vehicles, ha ha. No affiliate link but I did put a direct link to their site under the video.
@@DemonWorks hey while you are here, I know you rock the iDash and I found a guy 3D printing custom gauge pods for the ‘19 - Current GM trucks:

My windshield is tinted so didn’t want the suction cup mount, but it makes for a super clean install.
Interesting stock fuel filter setup. I'm actually surprised, I just did the fuel filters on my Canyon and it has two, not just one, in the housing. That said, this looks like an amazing upgrade that I'll have to do to my new truck at some point.
it will be a little bit easier to get the black goo from the frame in the fuel system with the filters off. I just ordered one and a PPE oil pan
On more question, what would be the filter change interval? I idle a lot during the summer so would I have to change it based on engine hours? Also will the fuel filter guage on the truck still be accurate?
I literally just told Tom that instructions are only for when stuff goes wrong lol.
Great vid. Thx for making. $500 is a little steep for me tho
I just carry extra filters and my socket wrench in case I’m on the road and need to change out filters. This seems like a good idea….. but the question is…does this void the warranty….?
Nice install, but you lose the protective shroud. I know you don’t keep vehicles for long and warranty isn’t an issue for you, but how might this affect a typical owner and warranty issues that might arise? But I really like the idea of double and higher quality filtration, especially here in illinois where I hear our diesel is the crappiest.
I cannot comment on warranty as it’s not my call. I do know the aftermarket part would have to be the cause of the issue that you are trying to get warrantied. I will say this can be swapped out within 30 minutes if you aren’t videoing it. 😂
I assume now that you'll replace both filters now at the same time going forward? Considering this truck and just researching as this would be my first diesel. I wonder what other filters from other mfgs are available if Donaldson discontinues those? I'm glad to see that its not hard to prime the diesel fuel system yourself now so this can be done in the garage. Thanks for the video.
There are wix and caterpillar variants available. These filters have been around for a very long time, so not much worry on them being discontinued. I will be gong to the Cat filters when I change these. Good luck on the new truck purchase! let me know if I can answer any questions for you. Side note, recently uploaded a 15,000 mile review video on my current truck, I've had 4 of these 3.0 duramaxes.
@@DemonWorks Thanks! Yep I watched that one as well. Your check engines scare me though hahaha. I'm in Minnesota so will have to deal with cold weather so am just researching about gelling and other cold weather concerns. What are your thoughts on having to use fuel treatment with every fill up? I regularly see that comment both here on UA-cam and in the forums.
@@DemonWorkswhat’s the part number for the CAT filters?
Nice video. I have an LM2 but see they have a kit for it also... Just wondering ...towards the end of your video after you check for leaks you show a view of the kit looking straight in on the kit. Not so worried about the filters maybe being a little lower than the bottom of the frame rail but it looks like the top of the conductivity probe housing and the fuel outlet block are a good bit closer to the bottom of the cab. May not be but looks that way. Hopefully there is enough clearance to allow for any cab movement.
Is there a part number for the water in fuel element ? Thanks
Great video! Helped a lot replacing my OEM with a new OEM. I was a dumbass installing a new filter and had to replace the whole thing.
Thanks again for the video
Great to hear it helped !!
Update: after installing the forward Donaldson filter sprayed fuel. Replaced with a Napa PN 3626 with sealed correctly.
Your video should make the transfer from the factory setup to VSE's much simpler. Thank you. I have one on order. I have never felt the factory setup was sufficient. I have a question about your secondary filter. The literature shows a Donaldson P551315 or a Cat 1R-0751. The filter I see installed on your unit is a Donaldson P550638. Please clarify.
thanks for the comment, I reviewed what you said, and I do see a discrepancy there and I will bring it up to VSE. The filters shown on mine should be the ones needed, the number in the literature appears to be a longer filter which may be ok for the L5P, but not ours due to length being an issue.
I bought a 2021 with the 3.0. It was eating 2 qts of oil every 1000 miles. After a year of oil consumption checks every 1000 miles they decided to change out a valve cover with a bad baffle inside. The oil eating went away and it was back to being a "good truck". But that's when the next batch of problems started. Spraying coolant out of the inter cooler, leaking oil, a particulate filter that's so clogged that it backs up exhaust smoke into the cab while driving. They have had my truck in and out of the shop coming up on 8 months now. GMC is not willing to buy my truck back.
that's terrible to hear !
Thank you
You're welcome
Does the double filtration, specifically the lower micron filters, add pressure loss into the fuel system? My worry is that the pump isn’t made to handle that type of pressure drop in the system.
The testing by VSE and their videos, shows there is no added strain on the pump and flow is matched to factory.
Do you feel like this install is necessary? Or just replacing the plastic cover with a metal cover so you don't round off the plastic nut and running a k&n filter is just as good? Thank you for all the videos!
Also broke one of the Blue snaps for the quick connect fitting. The VSE instructions call it a “security clip”.
Any Idea what the GM part number is so I can replace it?
Bump on this topic. Any clues?
After putting almost 100,000 miles on my 2021 3.0l and all the time it has been in the shop I’ll be going gas 3/4 ton or 1 ton with out cylinder deactivation
Did you ever manage to get the socket out of the frame?
You have several videos comparing 3.0 Oem fuel filter. Is VSE Fuel Saver not preferred or stay with Oem filter.
I try to show everything available for these trucks, oem and aftermarket, then let the viewers decide what is right for them. The VSE offers the best filtration possible. OEM works but has some flaws. OEM is cheaper than VSE.
Do you happen to have the part number for the blue safety clip?
I do not, sorry.
Could you remove the housing without removing the stock filter first?
Yes, but then you will have fuel sitting in the housing. It could spill afterwards or if you set it aside to return to stock, would be full of sludge. so that's why I drained first.
No, I was thinking I would drain and remove the filter after removing the housing just to control the mess as much as I could. Thanks
How often does the filter need to be changed? Looking at a LZO
Any issues with the Donaldson filters leaking? VSE has since switched to Baldwin filters due to the Donaldson O-rings not being up to snuff.
I had no issues. ua-cam.com/video/xwJBZwq2DgU/v-deo.html
With the dual filtration : what is the change interval if normal driving occurs (non extreme environment)
Factory suggested was 30K
Factory is suggested here as well because it’s replacing that system. I personally don’t like that long of an interval, so I like to swap before it tells me to, as cheap insurance.
Followed your instructions and still getting leaks looks like from the top of the unit any suggestions?
I am going to assume it is coming from the top element - I would remove the housing, remove the water in fuel sensor and verify the o-ring is undamaged. If it's ok, lubricate and gently work it down tightening a little bit from each bolt and walking it around. Hope that made sense, basically trying to evenly bring the water in fuel sensor down. it's a tight fit. Also want to confirm you used the provided bolts there and not the factory bolts? Other than that, nothing should be leaking on the top of the housing. let me know what you think / see.
Is the post fuel filter (after the water separater) supposed to have an o ring? My system is leaking from the post fuel filter a decent amount and I’m pretty sure I tightened it enough but maybe not. Just really looking for an answer…
It also didn’t start leaking right away. Put it on and then less than 24 hours left for a 900 mile road trip. The install was about 9 hours before I left and I drove my truck around to triple check for leaks and there were no leaks. Pull up to my condo and you could see diesel slowly dripping by the driver front door.
This seems like a cool product but I can't imagine how they can justify 500$ for the machining of this part and a couple filters. I would probably be a buyer at around 150 to 200 tops.
Cutaway video coming in the near future of the filters to see what/if they captured anything
True but how much is injectors just saying
You are paying for Engineering (that requires a high level of intelligence and understanding), R&D, Quality, and manufacturing at the hands of great people in the heartland of this country. That's why you pay. Just ordered one.
Was there a big o-ring or bushing around the water separator base?
I’m referring to the thread area where the filter spins on.
It does not.
This is awesome as my 22 refresh lm2 already had an entire fuel system replacement due to metal In the system. I need to ask though , will it void my warranty?
This would have to cause whatever you’d warranty issue is. And it’s a gm call. I will say, it can be replaced within about 30 minutes.
@@DemonWorks got it , in other words just like in anything, if it needs to go into to the dealer just swap it out back to stock just in case ?
Yikes! Where did the metal contamination come from? What were the symptoms?
@@AG-mt4bm where did the metal come from? Curious minds want to know
@@4961Studebaker while we wait for his answer, I’m assuming it was a pump failure.
Will this void any factory warranty on the vehicle?
Anything you do that may give them the remote possibility of wiggling out of honoring your warranty they will take advantage of
Does this brand happen to make this for a 2.8L? My Colorado zr2 bison from the factory comes with duel cartridge style ACdeco filters everything on the truck is stock……for now!
They do not, that 2.8 fuel filter setup is huge.
I have the 1500 silverado duramax wheer you locate oh more information for buy you product
So does this basically just filter the fuel twice?
There is a separate water separator and a fuel filter, where the factory one is a 2 in 1. The fuel filter is much finer than factory as is the water separator.
can these install on Isuzu Dmax?
Hi l have questions l have gmc 3.0 duramax 2021 crank don’t want star
can you go over change intervals? I tried to see if I could find something but no luck.
Factory filter is 25k, these match that but I’m likely going to do my more frequently just to keep them in hood shape and best filtration/flow possible.
@@DemonWorks I had seen one article that claimed the factory one was rated for 50k. Seemed a bit outrageous, but 25 seems more accurate. I'll likely do mine around 18-20k. Im the guy who changes the oil at 50% life lol. Are you sticking with the Donaldson filters? I'm considering the CAT one. Only cause they offer 2 micron filters. Thanks in. advance man!
Here’s a question I have, when you do a fuel filter change will the fuel filter spew all over the place without having that drain valve?
It will lose all that is in there, you can be in full control of it. That’s actually how I do it.
@@DemonWorks OK good to know, still a better set up, it appears compared to the stock one where you’re guaranteed to have a mess
Does this void warranty?
Would this work for the 3.0 in the Tahoe ?
I’m unsure if it’s been tested for fitment in the SUV’s. Best advice I can give is to contact Tom at RunVse and he can give you an answer.
@@DemonWorks thanks 🙏🏻 I’ve just come across your videos and they are great not many people are doing upgrades like this.
@@nathanzavala4288 thanks! I try to test out everything I can then share it with everyone.
Surprised there’s no skid plate to protect it
Dose any of this void the warranty?????
I cannot speak for warranty, it's such a vague topic and too discretionary amongst dealers.
My wife and I use puppy pads but for a much different reason. 😉
Haha! I have a bunch left over since the pup caught on quick enough. Gotta use them for something ! 😂
Does this work for the lm2
Yes, same system.
why are extensions always to long and the other too short.
I know my wife didn't use the factory nuts. I got a DNA test.
Thanks for turning us onto the VSE Fuel System Saver!
