    I bought some mag tech cover’s for my 95 dodge ram 3500 5 speed trans. for several reasons 1-drain and refill made simple 2-The covers have O-rings no sealant or gaskets needed 3- The covers also come with magnets for collecting metal particles 4- The covers are deeper so my capacity went up over a quart in the rear but still retaining factory fill level 5- oil does run cooler by about 70 degrees Fahrenheit on average. they look a hell of a lot better than the steel caps that came on the truck. and those are the reasons why i purchased mine. i pull heavy commercial air conditioners and sometimes pallets of sod a few years back i installed the complete banks power pack system With the ram air intake kit along with the banks double shot water methanol injection system which is working out pretty awesome so far. i easily doubled my power output. and because of that my next concern was my drivetrain and keeping it all in one pice. i am curious to see what the test’s say.

      i’ve been using my old truck for a long time for hauling. and the newer trucks were starting to kick my ass they could get the job done faster. and when your truck only goes 72 mph flat out that starts to become a problem in the hauling business.I usually did about 52 to 55 mph so I wasn’t beating it. just made for a long day. so i went from a 4.10 to a 3.73 to get a little more top end and once I did that the measly 180 HP had to be addressed with a complete banks kit. and that did the trick there was a few times I noticed that I could smell hot gear oil when loaded on a hot day. and taking a commonsense approach i figured because went with a taller gear ratio and added power there’s going to be more heat generated.That’s when I started checking there rear axle temp. By climbing on under the truck with a infrared temp gun after a heavy pull. that’s when I decided to bite the bullet and spend the small fortune on front and rear diff covers. there’s no doubt they help keep the gears cooler in my application. Would it be worth it to the average Joe that hardly pulls anything probably not. maybe if your running 38’s with the stock gearing. ive seen lots of newer trucks like dodge With louvered aluminum diff covers from the factory even my wife’s 1989 Toyota supra turbo has a louvered aluminum diff cover from the factory. So there’s gotta be something more to it that the engineers American and Japanese see as a benefit to having Louvered aluminum diff covers other than just bling.

      SIIN MC Makes sense because the pan is under the guts of the trans, could touch the ground and wouldn't make a difference in terms of trans performance

    • @johnmcdougald1238
      @johnmcdougald1238 6 років тому +6

      Depending on the results of the diff cover results, it might be worth looking at. The air flow is different between a trans pan and a diff cover. The trans pan is at least directly in contact with the air flow, where the diff cover is not.

    • @downshifter4179
      @downshifter4179 6 років тому +11

      Yes, the way a rear axle gears work versus the way a trans work is apples to oranges. BUT, all I wanted to know by saying to do trans pans next is just the same reason Mr. Banks is doing this test. Do aftermarket “cooling” pans actually work. That’s all.

    • @whatchu_talkin_john_willis
      @whatchu_talkin_john_willis 6 років тому +9

      deep cooling pans do work, even the thick aluminum transfers the heat faster that painted sheetmetal, gets it farther down into the airstream under the truck/car, and adds capacity.
      The gears in an auto aren't running in oil bath like a manual trans or axle, so the extra capacity isnt an issue as long as its not over the factory level up in the case.
      the added capacity increases warmup time but increases the thermal capacity, basically you can abuse the fluid more before it starts to see thermal runaway.

    They work pretty good at holding the fluid in. Thats about it. The only reason i would put an aftermarket on on would be hold more fluid, and have a drain plug and sightglass to monitor fluid quality amd contamination, especialy on a off road rig where water intrusion may be an issue.

    I bought mine because of the drain and fill plugs. It's a PITA dealing with the gasket every time you change the oil. Also, the one I had included a port for a temperature sensor. Can't monitor temp without that.

    All I know is that when I replaced the stock diff cover on my 1990 Dodge Cummins 12-valve with the Mag-Hytec, it was like new life for the truck. The old oil (even though it was running fine with friction modifier for a rear-wheel locker) was really bad.
    I now have a differential full of clean synthetic gear oil that can be drained from its bottom, with a magnetic dipstick that is constantly removing any metal from the oil (as I noticed, checking the level after the first drive with it, and again later when adding friction modifier for the rear-wheel locker).
    And, the inside of the Mag-Hytec cover for the Dana 70 rear end is nowhere near as squared-off as the ones that Gale here shows for the newer, bigger rear ends. It also sticks out farther away from the gear wheels.
    Granted, if Banks made a diff cover for the Dana 70, I probably would have bought one.

    Only reason i run them is for off-roading. You land your rear end on a rock and the stamped steel cover peels off the diff enough to start leaking. The aluminum one took a few hits but eventually started cracking. Ended up with one made locally from thick steel plate

    Very interesting so far.
    I did some testing on this years ago but not to this controllable degree. The only thing I could monitor was diff oil temp but I didn't have a rolling road. I tried to equalized the load and the driving routine, as well as doing the testing at roughly the same ambient temp and using the same lubricant. Best I could do in the field.
    In my case, the cover reduced the peak oil temp 15-20 degrees, but my peak was nowhere near what Mr. Banks was seeing as I could not apply a constant heavy load. I spoke with engineers at Dana and Meritor about these covers and they were generally not in favor. The main objection was that the distance between the cover and the ring gear is part of their calculations with regards to lube flow, aeration (more of which oxidizes the lubricant more rapidly), etc. They didn't like that they increased that distance and predicted negative effects. They had no problems with increased capacity, but they warned against increasing the level as Mr. Banks mentioned. The manufacturer of the cover I used wanted the lubricant level increased from stock. I tried it at their suggested level and then at the stock level but my test equipment could not uncover any differences beyond a margin of error. Still, I left it at the reduced level as my "instinct" drove me that way.
    The level indicators were very interesting here and the way the levels dropped. This was an aspect I had not considered. I wonder where that oil is going? Down the tubes? Clinging to the ring gear and carrier? Both? Interestingly, the manufacturer of my cover stated the reason for the increased levels was to feed more oil to the wheel bearings. Laudable, perhaps, but if the ring gear is already doing it, why is raising the level necessary?
    I have been running diff temp gauges in my trucks for 20 years or so and there are a great many good reasons to do so, especially if you tow. Even if you don't tow, it can help you choose the most efficient lubricant and viscosity to eliminate drag and potentially increase fuel economy. The diff is a place where the right lubricant can add a noticeable mpg gain.
    One quandary I had was placement of the sensor. I note Mr. Banks had the sensors in the bottom measuring the bulk oil temp. Did that too, but also put one up to measure the temp of the oil being spun off the ring gear, which was hotter oil. I wonder if there was any logic or testing applied to the determining locations of the sensors in this case?
    Anyway, this is an awesome test and I am dying to see the results!

    @scottlambeth5478 6 років тому +1

    When it comes to overfilling the rear end, if you notice in this video when they show a diagram of fluid level stationary vs 60 mph, the stationary level is right at the fill plug. Which reinforces the old idea of adding fluid until it begins to trickle out of the fill hole. The AFE cover they have on that Dodge doesn't have the same fill plug so overfilling could certainly be an issue there.
    Now providing you can fill it to the same level with the new cover, the new cover would probably allow for more fluid capacity, maybe just half a quart or so but more none the less. Overall a higher fluid capacity won't keep temperatures down but it will take longer for the fluid to reach full temp. Also a benefit of an aftermarket cover would be the drain plug it adds to the rear end so you don't have to remove the cover anymore to change the fluid.

    Different covers come from 4wding, might not mean much in the usa seeing as there's next to bugger all 4wding going on.
    Stronger cover doesn't crack hitting rocks etc
    Bigger cooling fins to help cool the diff oil
    Bigger or easier oil changes or cleaning of the oil
    The other is weight changes
    Maybe towing on the highway might be good for the bigger fins but depends on what it is and how much

    I'd say no additional heat with overfilling...maybe slight decrease in temp due to axle tubes aiding in heat dissipation...
    That's my guess, and I'm sticking to it.😋

    Different fluid levels could also be specified to accommodate differences in clutch type limited slip units vs. gear lockers, vs open differential used by different manufacturers. Hypothetical example: Wet clutches in a clutch type lsd my prefer more submersion than mechanical lockers.

    Really looking forward to the results of these tests. I just want to see slightly lower temps in my rear housing. I was told the issue I had was due to the fluid temp getting to high. Had a seal blow a few months back, reasoning from dealer was that factory capacity isn’t adequate for the projected and stated limitations of the truck. They told me, should I order a 1 ton cover or one of these aftermarket covers, they would install it and fill to factory level for me. The seal and brake rotors that were damaged were all covered under warranty, but I don’t want to be in there every few months with my truck in their shop for a few days.

    This is why Gale Banks is the Best in his Field and all other fields that he choses as his endeaver! Without yet,seeing the results, I can guess the result. Higher capacity, higher heat. So? What's next? Bearing seal failure? Now for a Stupid question? Maybe so, maybe not. Now if you're running an aftermarket diff cover w/higher level of fluid, what if somebody configured a cooler to cool this fluid? Obviously some obstacles like where to install(front grill)? Plus whenever you add extra connections with and for the cooler and lines, you exponentially increase the likelyhood of leaks, ultimately risking the failure of the entire mechanism. In this case, the axle seals, bearings, and finally the diff itself, usually in that order. Both lol and no lol! Any ?'s or comments?

    Us Jeep guys get aftermarket covers because the stock ones are thin and can be penetrated by a rock in the front. In the rear, they can be peeled off the sealing surface by being dragged over a rock.

    A lil off subject but I know what you mean about that dead area due to the flat surface of the differential cover. I'm a tractor trailer driver an I find that motorist like to drive directly behind my trailer cause it reduces that wind velocity/resistance to non existence for them while driving.

    I think that diff covers are popular because the people driving behind you can see it, especially if you have altered the ride height, and they think "oh wow that guy must have a super badass axle in that thing". I think that attention is why you see so many axle covers with obnoxious colors too

    I have done some testing on over filling on Dodge/Ram 11.5 With PML, I run 1 QT over full on all My Dodge Rams 2003-13 , I also have temp Gauge installed on all Trucks. In over 278K miles never a problem. I replace My 2003 11.5 at 82K miles , the pinion bearing failed the rest of the unit was like New. I replace the OEM Unit with TrueTrac all new bearing and replaced the R/P gears. Now the Seller of My TrueTrac adamantly told me to TQ the Side Bearings to 150FT LBS, I called again and inquired Why 150FT LBS is more than I usually do at 110FTS I thought was good. I immediately had heat increases ,But again the seller (Big Name Company) said it was normal on the TrueTrac.. Well when I went out to The Rockies Pulling My toy Hauler Temps went to 400F+ and I had to use My connections to fine a shop that I could used to remove the Cover and Check....Yep Wear on the R/P gears and side bearings, So I re-set the R/P Back lash and RE-TQ the Side bearings to 110FT LBS and continue on... After the 2,700 trip and back home I dropped the cover and Replace it all again do to the wear. IMO that extra 1QT saved that Unit until before/after I could return Home... and I was reimbursed for the 1st unit, it was discovered they were Quoting N m-FT LBS That was 9 years ago, I'm still running 1QT over to present on all My AM 11.5s and PMLs.

    So why not design and come up with a bolt-on air channeller basically a funnel that takes the air which flows around the top and bottom of the differential and forces it to wrap around the backside of the diff for better Cooling?

    I actually wouldn't be interested in temperature. My major question is do these covers help reduce ring gear deflection from housing flex during heavy hauling therefore increasing longevity? Also if it keeps the bearing journals in proper alignment during serious off-road use?
