Yes, the Ride of the Rohirrim is one to set aside our nit picks and let the chills commence- it captures the essence and is one of the most moving passages in any film I have ever seen. The Houses of Healing however- my daughter was incandescent that this was missed out of the Theatrical cut completely.
Mellon Geek: I really must reread (for the thousandth time?) LotR. Keep in mind, I was reading the trilogy (to my family, it was The Trilogy) when Tolkien was yet living. I had developed voices for all the major characters long before audio or cinematic productions--hence my nickname Gandalf. There is no doubt that Peter Jackson did many things well. This is why I wept the first time I watched the scene of Gandalf's arrival at Bag End. I had seen that exact image in my mind for many years--and there it was in all its beauty. So while I'd like to slap PJ for some of his changes, I would also like to commend him for finding the spirit of Tolkien and putting it on the screen. Great work, as always, mellon. Namarie.
Surely Tolkien meant by the word 'heathen' those who worshipped Morgoth in the dark days. And I did prefer the Field of Cormallen - 'Praise them with great praise!'
I think it's easier for filmmakers to put potentially offensive lines into the mouths of characters who are clearly not role models, like Denethor while he's losing his mind.
Do you also discuss the deus ex machina of the Riders of Rohan arriving just as (SPOILERS ROTK movie) just as the... (SPOILERS) Witch King breaks Gandalf's staff?
Spoilers? I don't think a single person who watches this video hasn't seen the movies. Why would one watch this without having seen it. In my case, it's been some years since I prefer the audio book version and don't watch the movies often. Maybe I should get my old PS2 and watch them again.
@@napoleonfeanor I still haven't seen Jackson's trilogy. I ordered a DVD player so that I can watch them. The DVD player has been in transit for the last 22 years. But I've contented myself with rereading the back of the DVD case for these past two decades. "With the help of a courageous fellowship of friends and allies, Frodo embarks on a perilous mission to destroy the legendary One Ring. Hunting Frodo are servants of the Dark Lord, Sauron, the Ring's evil creator. If Sauron reclaims the Ring, Middle-earth is doomed. Winner of four Academy Awards(C)*, this epic tale of good versus evil, friendship and sacrifice will transport you to a world beyond imagination." And apparently it has _animated menus!?_
What do you think he meant with Heathens? Melkor worshippers? It seems the most likely answer. Somewhere, maybe in the appendices or other material, I also read that some humans confused the Valar in general with gods, but, of course, only Melkor wanted to be worshipped...and Sauron wanted it,too (but he is no Valar).

I agree. He messed up numerous things, but I agree, he mostly got the spirit right.
I would add the shot where the hobbits ride back into the Shire, and get funny looks for the way they are dressed and armed.

Surely you must be Tolkien!
To be fair, Frodo's chant sounds like the chant from Indiana Jones: Temple of Doom?
Kalima, kalima! Kalima!!

Tolkien is theoretically translating foreign languages into English. "Heathens" is the best word he could come up with 🤔
