Fixing Textures Scale & Projection in Cinema 4D 25

  • A student wrote me about a project where their textures looked right when they were zoomed in, but they looked wrong when they zoomed out.
In this case, this issue is that they were applying their material to an imported CAD model and different parts of their model had very different scales in UV space.
In this video, I go over a few techniques that can help with this:
    - Changing texture projection from UVW to Cubic Mapping
    - Adjusting the scale of a Cubic Mapped texture
    - Auto-unwrapping the UVs of an object to get a more predictable result.

Note: This video is an off-the-cuff recording and a bit rough around the edges, but I felt this might be broadly useful information so I'm uploading it even though it's not up to my usual standard.

Looool! You're the only one who helped me!!! It was straight on point dude! Thank you so much!!!🔥🔥🔥 I had some sort of black glitch right on my abstract model where I used leather texture.

I have a question. How to fit UVW to real world scale of texture. For example I have texture of tiles and I know real dimension of the picture how can I fit it to my geometry in mm?

No super easy way to do that, at least from a UVs perspective because you can apply multiple materials w/ multiple textures, each with a different physical scale to the same object.
That said, I'd start w/ some sort of Auto UVs so that everything is the correct relative size, then adjust your texture tiling settings until the material looks good on an element of known size.
If you just want real-world sizing and don't care about perfect UVs, look into something called TriPlanar mapping; it was created to solve these sorts of real-world sizing issues.

And we still don't have an option rotate the textures. so bad.
