The thing i think people never consider about their oick and roll game, especially modern basketball fans who want to minimize their skill, is the decisiveness with with they execute it. They arent just going through motions or half heartedly setting a screen. Malone is quickly getting himself to the right angle and immediately moving to the correct space to recieve the ball, and Stockton is immediately moving to either drive or pull away the defender for the pass. There is no moment of uncertainty when they run it. I watch so many modern players run rolls and it looks like neither player is really committed to it. Its either they hit the screen hard and dona lazy non conmitted roll, or they barely screen at all and just roll immediately. I feel like we dont see guys do everything textbook every time. Theres a reason they could do this play for 15 years straight.

it's a different era. No zone defense meant that you had to play man-to-man. Nowadays, defenses would throw in a 3rd man on the strong side to prevent the roll and try to make Malone shoot jump shots. A pass to the interior from Malone if he were to roll can get picked off or deflected and the 3rd defender could run back out to the opposite corner if Malone or Stockton were to pass back to the weak-side corner. Today, a corner 3 is highly prized but not in use as much back in the 90s while the 3rd defender can get back to his man on the baseline if he closes out properly.
Icing the pick and roll (as popularized by Thibodeau in the late 2000s) also was not used in this era heavily so Malone's man dropping back to prevent the layup while Stockton's defender hedging the screen to prevent the open-jumper and trying to send him baseline as opposed to down the middle wasn't a big thing.

@@kawaiiafangirlthat still doesn’t explain why they run it really half assed today. You just tried to explain why it wouldn’t work.

      @@Ezekial2517 I mentioned drop coverage.
Switching is also more frequently used now compared to the 90s. Defenses switch bc there are so many great 3-Pt. shooters.
Zone defenses mean that players can just sag away from their man a few feet to be ready for the roll man while also staying close enough for a hard close-out on a 3-Point Shooter.
There's a few reasons why the pick-and-roll isn't as frequently used today. They even used a Spain PnR bc the previous style was adapted to by defenses.

I’ve watched this a dozen times and the amount of bad defence decisions is insane and most of them are dropping off Karl? He must have been a master at disguising himself as an option or I just don’t know how he did it

Unfortunately the Jazz were very serious but to quote Halberstam:
"But if there was a downside, it was that they were very predictable [...] The price of their discipline might be a certain gap in pure creativity, the ability to freelance when the disciplined offense was momentarily checked."
      Best regards.
