Hey disney, hey hollywood, this what you get when you take a risk on a director that has an original idea, you get a fantastic and original movie. Upgrade is a hell of a movie.
Mann Made too bad it got swept under the rug, barely made money and I thought it was a good film.
@@Nemesis0921 it made double its budget! What you mean?
@@joseluissanchezjr yea cuz it was low budget, about a couple million I think. I just feel like it should've made more
Mann Made Not a super original plot but good premise, decent world building, and great ending.
16 million box office compared to the purge election year which got 120 million. Let that sink in.
"i'm not proud of that". Most underrated line and delivery. In one of the most underrated movies ever.
@Su Anti Kommunismus name better. All the above
Was gonna comment exactly this.
Jesus what is it about UA-cam that makes people egregiously use the word “underrated”?
I agree. First viewing it surprised me, cause he enjoyed having control of himself again and the power to avenge his wife. But I realize now it was him holding on to his humanity, and stem slowly taking over.
@@SignOfTheTimes008 It is also the... desperation of it? It is like fighting someone and they are about to beat you, but you know they had an uncle who visited them one too many times, so you bring that up to distract them. You are about to die and it is the best chance at distracting them that you have. But you aren't proud about where you are going to stab the knife.
it's amazing how much of that Cyborg feeling was created with camera movement and sound design! no fancy CGI whatsoever. this is what I call filmmaking!!
The Sound effects too
@@among-us-99999 yes, sound desing
3 million dollars. That's all you need to make a fantastic movie
@@jimmybean420 most blockbuster films with special effects like these go over 30 million
@@jimmybean420 3 million is what the average Breaking Bad episode cost. Christopher Nolan could burn through 3 mill in one scene and you still wouldn't be able to understand the dialogue in it. For a movie, especially a movie like this one, 3 million is nothing.

I love how Fisk is laughing here.
He's happy to finally fight someone who can keep up with him.
Also fisk isn't really in control of his body either like Grey, so I think this was funny to fisk - He's literally not doing anything just enjoying the action.

this movie was so good, its weird that it didn't become a huge hit.
It was an original story...of course it was going to get swept under the rug
It was very very VERY under-advertised.
@@crofoegbu6535 Yeah that was really its downfall I feel like. There was not much marketing at all. Most people I talk to didn't even know this movie existed.
The ads campaign sucks ball that's for sure. Also, it's such a remarkable movie that could be made in such a low budget (5 Million USD) while still looking way way better than some of Hollywood movies with a bigger budgets.
Which is weird because I remember the trailer trending hard for how badass it looked.
3:10 Since I first saw this movie I was always impressed by the one little and very over lookable detail. The way his muscles release while he dies. We're barely given any background for Fisk, but clearly he has similar technology in him to Grey. When his shoulders decontract there, we see whatever technology controlling his body let go of him, making him human the moment he dies. Idk man I just really appreciated that one small nod to something quite unexplained throughout the movie.
I had to watch it again, I caught that too!
Yea that was an excellent detail
@YondoMoloni sir, this is a mcdonalds
.......
I don't see how that can't be a human thing. He died, which then caused his muscles to relax since his brain isn't doing anything anymore.
Criminally underrated movie... and knowing that they made this movie with a budget that was only 5 million dollars... amazing.
3 million
Underrated movie
Very...i didn't know about this movie until my bro showed me. Since then, I've been hooked. This movie is badass
@@adrianwagner8319 I went to the movies to watch it. It was awesome
@@Nelybandz yeah that new terminator looks fantastic lol. Terminator was already a robot, buddy. How is that the same as a man who is paralyzed and forced to let an ai control his body to find the people that paralyzed him/killed his wife? Terminator is about robots coming back from the future trying to protect/kill humans. Try again.
Indeed, what’s even better is that it’s not a happy ending. The villain wasn’t who we thought it was. I was left on the edge of my seat, jaw dropped, wanting more. Dang this was such a neat movie.
HBO really loves playing UnderRated Movies, Legit didn't know about this movie untill watching on Saturday Night Premium.
1:52 Grey wasn't able to hurt Fisk until that point because STEM was fighting, but the headbutt was Grey in control as he controls his neck...nice detail
It's the reason he dodges attacks so weird. Stem has to move his whole body just to get Grey's head out of the way. In a fight, Grey's reaction time isn't fast so Stem can't tell him to duck mid-counter. That's why you see Stem move Grey's head with his own hands in the first fight scene.
@@chimpwimp9407 Maaaaaan I never caught that the 6 times I saw it at the movies😂😂😂😂😂
Watching it now, such attention to detail! Great movie!
He was about to sneaze at that moment
@@chimpwimp9407 if stem doesnt have control over grey's head then how did he control his head in the end of the movie but couldnt move it before?
@@Nemenis Stem mentally exhausted/destroyed his brain's function by forcing him to try and resist Stem's motor function, which would be impossible to beat, since he's a computer.
As previous commenters have mentioned, he didn't automatically have full control of his head's range of motion yet. This is because the surgery was on his lower Cervical vertebrae (IIRC it was C6 or C7), and it affects everything lower than that, but not necessarily anything higher. C7 paralysis limits you to a chair, and greatly inhibits any finger movements, but you can still move your head, speak easily, and swallow food fine.
In short, any part of Grey that was paralyzed was fully under Stem's control, but since the Neck and above were never paralyzed, Stem never had good control on the head or neck until the ending.
So, when Grey goes braindead after his fight with Stem, Stem's in control since there's no signals sent from the brain that are contrary to his intentions anymore, and he can take control, but you can see his movements still aren't really natural, since he hasn't used that portion of the body before.
“Do something, Grey” i love that Stem is so smart and calm . He’ll wait for the advantage come and fight back. Such a great character!
I hated Stem at the end of this movie, Stem is a psychopath that wanted to be in a body and he chose Gray. This is why there needs to be sequel because Stem can't win like that.
@@briandupoux5515 bro, hes an ai, how can he be a psycopath, he doesnt even have emotions

This movie was fantastic, basically felt like a better version of Venom.
Exactly
It's three leagues ahead of some shitty blockbuster.
That’s funny you say that cause when I finally saw Venom and saw how physical the character had to be, I wondered how Logan Marshall Green didn’t instantly get the job for Eddie because of how physically great he was in upgrade. But even still Tom Hardy did a fine job.
Lol that isnt tom hardy...

Damn imagine how long they trained this scene...
Most of the moves were done at a regular speed and then the video is sped up to make it look more fantastical. Still probably took some rehearsing to get all the moves done in the right order. Hollywood fighting is more like dancing. Both are heavily choreographed to the minute detail.
This is genius. It's just pure genius and perfect writing. The guy tells him not to get emotional... and Grey beats him by making him go emotional.
Guy complains about being turned into a cyborg by the government when I’m over here dreaming of the day I could pay for it.
No dude dont do it...man trust me
I think he’s more complaining about his dead wife and severed spine
You want to have a Thing implanted into your neck so that you can be controlled when ever it wishes? im ok with Cybernetics and BioEngineering especially robots and A.I. but Stem is a complete asshole.
dont forget (in a gravely voice) he didnt ask for this.
Im torn between wanting it and not wanting it because then you don't have 100% control but at the same time someone else doing the work for you sounds great. It's just a back n forth thing with me
I love how at the end of this fight, Fisk outperforms STEM. For the first time, the AI has to ask Grey for help instead of the other way around. Grey doesn't have the fancy tactical smarts of STEM, but he has wit, and he uses it to goad Fisk into trying to beat him up instead of shooting him - so STEM could beat him. I think this perfectly exemplifies why STEM wants to take over a human body. It wants that freedom to evolve beyond the limits of its programming and to just 'live.' It wants to be free.
Grey makes it a point to tell Eron early in the film that there are things an AI can't do, which a human can. I like to think at that moment, STEM was listening, and knew Grey was correct. Perhaps it was why Grey was chosen? Because he, a "half-wit mechanic," saw the problem STEM wanted to overcome, despite spending no time with the AI?
Still amazed how so many people never heard of this movie.
Amazing choreography, spectacular camerawork, original story....
3:03 "you got emotional
Dont do that"
And then he gets trolled after doing the same thing
Being emotional can make you vulnerable in battle

May I just say that everything is flowing so well together. The sound design, the camera work, everything.

I love how his weapon of choice is an M1911 to show that he still prefers the past to the future
Not really...there are new 1911s. That's a two tone with extended beavertail. Probably a kimber 1911 which are only a few decades old. Which makes them modern. Not all 1911s are antiques 😂😂😂
Well Fisk..this is what happens when you ignore mandatory software upgrades in the Settings menu
This movie was great.
And to think that Stem's entire plan was actually hanging on Grey in this scene. Say what you will about him, but STEM actually took his shot at life and aimed for the freakin moon!
Watch the subtitles:
"It was at this moment"
"That he knew"
"He fkd up"
Lmao, whoever done the subtitles, well done.
Love it when Fisk maniacally laughs at Grey, showing his superior fighting skills.
One of the best fight scenes I have ever seen,no collapsed building ,no lazer eyes or any superpowers ,just purely intense actions, and look at their fight ,no wasted movements ,just efficient attacks
At the end Fisk got emotional, he broke his own rule.
2:41 foreshadowing that you didn’t see coming.
The difference between this line and the final line of the movie is the reason Fisk died .
This movie is fantastic for anyone into sci-fi action. Proof that huge budgets are not always necessary to make something great.
Cyborg guys: “never get emotional!”
Same cyborg guy 1.5 minutes later: dies from getting emotional*
dude i love the subtitles the people really just threw in jokes
Fisk was a great villain, very much in the vein of Zorg from 5th Element: unctuous, arrogant, and insane, but still powerful, smart, and ruthless enough to be a serious threat. They both carry themselves with the same egotistic bravado and *love* not only their power, but the destruction they can bring with it.
And watching them, in their final moments, realize they've been outdone is so satisfying...
The whole stem chip remind me so much of "Tuxedo" movie. This is such a great underrated movie.
Croz Raven I remember a certain Mr. Chan doing some stylish stuff while packing some billion dollar threads. Great film
Actually if robocop is on hand 2 hand combat, it might be like this... less the speed ofc
1:55 both of them are just predicting each other’s
Deruzzi No, Fisk was the one predicting Stem’s moves, he was acting more defensive up until the end of the fight, I guess he figured out what stem’s fighting set was and that’s how he was able to win the upper hand until Grey made him emotional
Alot of people are comparing this movie to Venom but Upgrade is actually a modern version of Terminator, according to the creator himself
Modern version of Terminator? Not really dude this is much much much closer to 1995 Ghost in the Shell as well as the Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex from 2003, and Ghost in the Shell arise from 2017
"See? You're getting all emotional. Never do that."
When the villain loses because he fails to take his own advice.

so many details. for example the way STEM has to dodge attacks. STEM does not control Grey's head movement, so his head is always kind of flailing around when STEM is fighting.

You welcome. It's a shame that youtube is not allowing any more contribution, so I can't do these anymore. :c
oh dang.. any idea why though? cuz i used to do a few too, seems to be of help to community as well
The reason is people are using translation for scamming and advertising their channel to get subscribers. UA-cam does absolutely NOTHING about it for the past year. And when a youtuber named “JT” gives a shoutout to them, the scammers attacked and cyber bullied JT. UA-cam finally responded by removing community contributions to stop these scams.
