      feels like instead of tackling the main issue they are walking all around it and focusing on everything else. ..the whole "going into new direction with 10 year old game" seems nothing but making "hype". that ai this is such a cheap way to get shareholders excited...thing is EA especially but also most of dev companies are legaly obligated to bring as much money to shareholders as they can and so it can never be product of love anymore. those times are gone. unless you have company without shareholders, that isn't publicly traded forget about it. also those oldd leadership managers ...they don't wanna take risks, they just wanna get free money and not really do any meaningful work. they just throw new words to make it look like they are doing something new meaningful while there is nothing truly new, just slightly refreshed pipeline of new dlc's and whatnot.

    I just wish EA would re-release The Sims 3 (remastered if you will) and made it so it’s 64 bit instead of 32. TS3 was so ambitious for its time, but now technology has caught up to the demand of that game. It would be amazing if we could play a better optimized version

I've steered clear of Sims 4 for awhile till I heard it was free, but the amount of basic content is just laughable. Really just boils down to minimizing the amount of work and maximising the profits.

      @CherryPixelBun Місяць тому +118

      TBH I wonder if that's why they're hesitant to move onto a new game. A lot of live service games can comfortably coast on success because they're in a space of large scale multiplayer games and unless you have a freak stroke of luck like Fortnite putting out a free Battle Royale mode to compete with PUBG the game will struggle and die off. The difference here and with SimCity is that Sims has been traditionally a singleplayer game, something that a competitor can much more easily provide. SimCity did have an online social aspect to it but it wasn't critical to the SimCity experience so City Skylines ended up eating its lunch.
      So I assume EA has opted to just keep the current gravy train rolling because they know it's successful.

    • @TheVonMatrices
      @TheVonMatrices Місяць тому +3

      I do agree that it is a silly excuse because countless F2P games have developed their business models on having "seasons," which have regular game resets.
      However, I do think that game companies force themselves into a corner when they continue making expansions to an old game rather than developing a new one. They have the conundrum that they know the game is old and want to develop something completely new, but if they were to make a sequel, it would not have all the features of all the predecessor's expansions at launch, and that would result in negative reviews and sales problems. This happened to Cities:Skylines 2, and I think that launch had a chilling effect on sequels to games that have lots of expansions.

      I don't think they wanted to do this.
      Similar to the way they didn't want to release TS4 the way they did.
      I think they INTENDED to milk TS4 for many more years, got caught with their pants down with tons of competitors.
      At that point they're barely into production against these games dropping in 2025.
      So do they A, release something in 2028(or beyond) as they should, after watching their position dwindle, or, should they reuse assets, code, etc, to make a new project, then claim the asset re-usage is "better for the players because they get to keep their stuff" and try to sell that.
      If they can do this, and launch by 2025, they likely think they won't lose their position.
      This is clearly some EA exec trying to twist an L (taking a loss on position), and trying to screw players over (asset re-usage) as a W (players will get to keep their stuff and their saves!).
      What's ironic is that I highly suspect they won't release anything worth playing by 2025.

      I don't think they care about splitting the fan base at all. If anything, I see them signaling that they are looking at moving more towards the Roblox model, where players make content that they can sell to other players. I'm assuming they're thinking that they can justify any hit caused by potential gap in quality by lowered overhead, but this is all speculation.
      Also, it's worth noting that EA is the company that squirts out a new, barely changed Madden/FIFA every year. I don't think there's anyone at EA in a position to approve new projects that cares about anything other than what's most profitable

    Also my 2 cents as a software engineer. The age of the engine isn't the issue. As long as you've got people that understand how the engine works in its current state, you can expand upon it in ways that it was never originally designed for, to a point. The main issue that I'm getting from every new patch, is that they do not have adequate testing practices in place. Whether we're talking automated unit testing, integration testing etc, or even the QA team as a whole. I do not trust a team to rewrite or modify core components of the engine when they have proven time and time again they're unable to deliver basic content updates without breaking existing functionality.
    Edit: changed "an issue" to "the issue". Old software does eventually need to be replaced!

      I am also a software engineer. The age of a platform is absolutely an issue lol, not only do new underlying technologies with more and better features become available over time, but compatibility with other integrated systems -- in the case of games, operating systems and hardware support are a huge one -- becomes an increasing issue the older a platform is. Not planning to rebuild, replace, migrate, is planning to have future infrastructure issues.

    • @sharpenednoodles
      @sharpenednoodles Місяць тому +43

      @@DeinonychusCowboy but not in this case, it's a 10+ year old 64 bit engine. The main limitations are its design roots in the MMO space. Its age of this codebase isn't the issue. I say this as someone who works daily on a 30+ year old C++ codebase. The limitations we've encountered are predominantly due to previous poor design decisions, which can, and have been fixed with extreme willpower and skill.
      Given modern abstraction layers (which we unfortunately don't have the privilege of working with) compatibility for this engine should be trivial. Blaming the age of the engine for the issues with the Sims 4 is a cop out. If there really are major issues that cannot be fixed without a complete rewrite (and that could be the case given the state of the game) then that is almost entirely related to poor design decisions within the core of the engine, not the age of the game.

      though from looking at the game's directory for more than 5 seconds and analyzing a few things in a hex editor, it seems that they're using cython(python interpreted to c code and compiled into a native binary) for the Simulation_x64.dll library, since i've found multiple strings that look like python comment blocks in this dll, at around offset(address? whatever these are called lmao) e1ffe0

      This game came out 20 years ago and there are still modern life sim games (cough cough TS4) that have been unable to surpass its greatness. For its time it’s astounding how amazing of a game it is, and it still holds up today, still managed to maintain its relevance.

    I'll try to see the positive here: no more Sims to destroy and ruin by EA.
    It was once possible to own a copy of a Sims game with all DLCs. It is not impossible to do that without being extremely rich.
    Each game was worse in that regard, now with DLC with sub-DLC.
    Imagine what a Sims 6 would be like. Thousands of DLCs. DLCs for the DLCs for the DLCs for the DLCs. Microtransactions all over the place. Pay to win multiplayer. I don't want to see the brand go into further destruction.

Citites Skylines took the reins from EA in the city builder genre. I think Paralives or InZOI will likley do the same here over the course of the next few years. Sim City died faster because Cities Skylines became a viable alternative very early on after it was released. I think having paid mods is rather a bad idea because when money enters the picture people will become a lot more guarded about helping each other. Part of a nice thing about a free/non-paid modding community is collaboration and a willingness to share work on an even working field. If some people are getting paid for their work and others aren't then the field is no longer even which can exaggerate gating and cloistering of groups.
    If anything the compatibility of paid mods with unpaid mods could become an issue with a greater hesitancy of sharing code and discoveries.

      I think the most obvious example is comparing Minecraft modding with Roblox games. Roblox is utterly dominated by total cash grabs using all the dirtiest tricks on the market, learning everything they can from the decline of mobile games... because that's how you make the most money. And those are also in all the "top games", because they're all about getting that "like" click and getting people to play even if the game sucks.
      Of course, Minecraft _Bedrock_ also gave us paid mods. Are they better than Java's mods? Are they more varied? More interesting? Nah. Micro-transactions make you spend lots of money without thinking all that much. But you're not going to micro-sell a mod that does anything the slightest bit complicated.
      Do mods _have_ to be free? Nah. But there's a big difference between someone making Counter Strike as a mod and having it turned into a paid game, and making a market for every single thing in the game. External motivation tends to kill internal motivation... and external motivation follows what pays, not what's fun or interesting (thankfully, sometimes you _can_ get both; but that's unlikely in a market like this).

    I remember when the EA logo used to be a seal of quality. Command and Conquer, SSX, LOTR: The Two Towers, Def Jam Fight for NY, Burnout Revenge...they put out SO many incredible games in the 2000s. Now the EA logo is a massive red flag telling you to steer clear of anything they touch.
