I hear you about the color overload! My favorite look is black and white (or neutral colors) with 2-3 pops of color used sparingly on pillow, posters, decor, etc. I create a lot of my posters on canva too, and use the same color scheme with the same muted colors on every poster with the black and white. That way my room looks cohesive and less like a crayon box.

You could do some boho baskets and neutrals. Those naturals are calming subtle colors.

Yes, I'm definitely going to pull in some of those elements.

I've been doing the same thing, lately. Swapping out some colour for more muted tones/textures. I love your classroom, and your down to earth vibe. Will keep watching.

I think there's a lot of research into the effect of colour and decor on classrooms. It's been a while since I got training in this, and things might have changed, but I think the consensus is to avoid overstimulation and to maximise learning by keeping about 50 percent of wall space blank and avoiding cluttery decor. Creams, natural blues and greens paired with pops of yellow are usually advised to create a calm but cosy environment. In one setting, we all had hessian display backing, and it was really calming but also warm and cosy. I was also warned against no colour: all black-and-white decor or too much of a single colour, can be understimulating as colour helps with emotional regulation and brain development; but that was something I was told rather than taught, so don't quote me on that. I have seen online articles that list ideal colours for classrooms and the colour recs change according to setting and age. Hope this helps. The important thing is you also feel great in your space. Have a great summer and enjoy your new classroom.

I love that you had actual training on this. I really think color and clutter effects emotional regulation more than we know. I know I won't get it 100% right, but I know I need to move to more calming colors than all my bright colors that I've been using.

I love the black and white. I’ve been at home with my own boys for many years and returning teaching next year and I’m doing black, white and then a mustard yellow with a blue and green, more cozy color scheme and not loud in your face.

I understand the classroom color dilemma. I’m moving buildings next year and the door, cabinet and cubbies are all painted bright blue. My goal is to add zero extra color in with that because that is a lot on it’s on 😳

Ugh...I hate when they put in super bright colors on furniture!

12:08 I moved classrooms and grades (from third to fourth) two years ago and decided to simplify my color scheme a bit and it's worked so well! Anything science related that I want to hang up around the room, I print on orange paper/cardstock. Math is in yellow, ELA is in green, social studies is in pink, and blue is general class things (rules, hand signals, etc.). (My multiples posters follow a green, pink, blue, yellow pattern- I'm considering making them all yellow next year, but not sure.) I feel like it provides plenty of color, but isn't a rainbow and the kids connect different colors to different subjects.

I've never thought about color coding the posters! That's a neat idea!

    Well Rachel,
For me, I like the color.
And really, it does not matter what scheme you use in your decor. If your students are not interested in what you are doing with them or having them do you are out. I was a sped student and I am autistic and really I got off task because I got overwhelmed, overloaded, there were things that took over from outside of school (back when television had more of something to laugh or cheer out loud about), and I got anxious about being away from home. Basically, I needed help or some sort of therapy dealing with being away from home everyday.
Remember, whatever you decide to do that the same classroom you are teaching in is the same classroom that your student will be run out of their houses to everyday.
For me, I just cannot get enough of the color. But, it's your choice.
I love you regardless because you are resourceful to your students and I enjoy you sharing your teaching experiences.
And I enjoy seeing your beautiful face and hair.
    - Dwight

I just found you the other day and I have watched a ton of your videos! I feel like we would be friends if we taught on the same team, LOL. I appreciate your down-to-earth-ness. For your Reading notebook tabs, what do you put in the section for word work? I would love to learn more about that.

I'm sure we would! I've worked with so many amazing teacher friends! We put our prefixes and suffixes information in the word study section. It will probably change a little this year since we are getting a new curriculum for ELA.
